Priapella compressa is a blue-eyed livebearer of fast, clear, almost torrential streams on the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico. Unlike the showy, broadly tolerant guppies and platies that dominate the hobby, this is a current-loving specialist: a streamlined, silvery toothcarp built for life in shallow flowing water, instantly recognisable by the brilliant turquoise sheen of its eyes and, in males, by a heavy keel running along the underside of the tail. Demanding of clean, oxygen-rich water and rarely offered in the trade, it is a fish for the dedicated keeper rather than the beginner — and one whose wild populations near the ruins of Palenque are poorly enough documented that the IUCN still lists it as Data Deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Priapella compressa was described by the Mexican ichthyologist José Álvarez del Villar in 1948, in his contribution to the knowledge of the genus Priapella published in the Revista de la Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural. The genus Priapella is a small group of livebearing toothcarps endemic to the Atlantic-slope drainages of southern Mexico and adjacent Guatemala, and is placed in the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers that also contain the guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Priapella compressa Álvarez, 1948 as a valid name within the genus.

The genus name Priapella is a diminutive built on Priapus, the Greek and Roman god of fertility and procreation, alluding — as so often in poeciliid nomenclature — to the conspicuous male copulatory organ, the gonopodium. The specific epithet compressa is Latin for "compressed," describing the laterally flattened, slab-sided body that distinguishes the species. In the aquarium hobby the fish is known as the Palenque priapella, after the region of Chiapas where it is found, or simply as a "blue-eye," a name the genus shares on account of its striking iridescent eyes.

Priapella is anatomically close to the knife-bellied livebearers of the genus Alfaro, with which it shares the development of a ventral keel along the caudal peduncle; in P. compressa this keel is especially pronounced in mature males. The genus is small and its species are restricted, allopatric and easily confused, so careful locality data matter more here than with the cosmopolitan aquarium livebearers.

Morphology

Priapella compressa is a small, elongate, laterally compressed livebearer. Males reach roughly 2 in in total length while females are larger and deeper-bodied, growing to about 3 in. The body is silvery and rather plain compared with the gaudy domestic livebearers, but the species is far from drab: the single most arresting feature is the eye, which carries a brilliant blue-to-turquoise iridescent sheen shared across the genus and responsible for the hobby name "blue-eye."

Mature males develop a massive keel along the underside of the caudal peduncle — the slab of tissue running forward from the base of the tail — a trait that recalls the related knife-bellied Alfaro and helps distinguish Priapella at a glance. As in all poeciliids, the male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender rod-like intromittent organ formed from elongated and partly fused fin rays and used to deliver sperm to the female. Females retain an ordinary fan-shaped anal fin.

The overall build is that of a fish adapted to moving water: streamlined, compressed and a powerful swimmer rather than a slow midwater drifter. The combination of the laterally flattened body, the silvery flanks, the blue eye and — in males — the ventral caudal keel and gonopodium together make for a distinctive animal, even if its colours are subtle next to the selectively bred livebearers of the shops.

Habitat

Priapella compressa is native to the Atlantic-slope freshwaters of southern Mexico, in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz. FishBase places it broadly in the Río Grijalva system through to the lower Río Usumacinta basin; the IUCN assessment localises records to the Usumacinta basin around the Chiapas–Tabasco border, including the Río Otolum (a tributary of the Río Michol in the Tulijá system) near the Palenque ruins, the Río Paxilhá (a tributary of the Río Tulijá), and the Agua Azul cascades in Chiapas.

The fish is a specialist of rapidly flowing, preferably torrential water. It is typically found in shallow reaches only about 8–19.5 in deep, living close to the surface of clear, well-oxygenated flowing streams — a very different niche from the still ditches, ponds and canals favoured by guppies and mollies. In at least the Río Palenque it co-occurs with the livebearing swordtail Xiphophorus alvarezi.

Reported water conditions reflect this clear-stream habitat: warm tropical temperatures broadly from the low to high 20s Celsius (around 75–82 °F in FishBase, with hobby sources keeping it as low as the low 20s), near-neutral pH around 6.8–7.2, and moderately soft to medium-hard water (about 5–15 dH). The defining requirement, repeated by every source, is movement and cleanliness: this is a fish of clear, current-swept, oxygen-rich water rather than warm stagnant pools.

Feeding

In the wild Priapella compressa is principally an insectivore. FishBase and the IUCN both note that it feeds on insects, a habit consistent with its surface-oriented life in flowing water, where it takes drifting and fallen invertebrates from the current and the water's surface film. Its reported trophic level of around 3.2 places it firmly among the small carnivores rather than the algae-grazing omnivores.

In the aquarium this surface-feeding, insect-eating nature is the single most important thing to get right. Hobby sources stress that aerial and surface foods are close to essential, and that fruit flies (Drosophila) in particular are almost indispensable for conditioning and breeding the species — an unusual demand among aquarium livebearers, most of which take flake from the moment they are netted. The fish will accept other small live and frozen foods and high-quality dry foods that stay near the surface, but a diet built around small floating insect-type items best matches its biology.

Because the species naturally feeds at and just below the surface in moving water, foods that sink quickly out of the current are largely wasted on it. Frequent small offerings of varied, protein-rich, surface-available foods suit it far better than a single heavy feeding, and good feeding is tightly linked to the species' otherwise reluctant breeding.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Priapella compressa practises internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium — a mobile, rod-like organ built from elongated, partly fused fin rays — which he swings forward and uses to transfer packets of sperm into the female's genital opening. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning; fertilisation and the entire early development of the young take place inside the female.

Courtship in Priapella follows the general poeciliid pattern of persistent male attention to females, with the male manoeuvring to bring the gonopodium into position. As with related livebearers, females are able to store viable sperm internally for some time after mating, so a single successful insemination can in principle support more than one brood. Detailed, published observations of the courtship behaviour of this particular species are sparse, however, and the hobby literature treats it as a fish that breeds only reluctantly under aquarium conditions.

The practical consequence for a keeper is that getting the fish into breeding condition depends heavily on husbandry rather than on any elaborate display ritual: clean, current-swept, oxygen-rich water and a steady supply of surface insect foods such as fruit flies are repeatedly cited as the prerequisites for successful mating and reproduction in captivity.

Breeding

Priapella compressa is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than depositing eggs. FishBase reports a gestation period of about 28 days, after which the female produces a brood of roughly 10 to 30 fully formed fry — a modest output by the standards of the prolific guppy, in keeping with the species' more specialised, lower-density way of life.

The newborn fry are miniature, independent fish that can swim and feed at once. Raising them well depends, as with the adults, on appropriate food and water: small live foods and surface-available items support growth, and the same insistence on clean, oxygen-rich, flowing water applies. Hobby sources describe the species as rarely bred and infrequently offered, with most specimens reaching the European trade as German captive-bred stock rather than wild imports — a sign of how comparatively demanding it is to reproduce in numbers.

There is no published evidence that this species practises superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages seen in some other poeciliids — so it should be assumed to carry a single brood at a time on the roughly four-week cycle reported. As with most livebearers, dense cover or separation of the fry from the adults helps survival, since newborn poeciliids are vulnerable to being eaten.

In the aquarium

Priapella compressa is a beautiful but genuinely demanding aquarium fish, better suited to an experienced livebearer keeper than to a beginner. The non-negotiable requirement is water quality and movement: it is a fish of clear, torrential streams, and sources are unanimous that the aquarium must be very clean, strongly filtered, well-oxygenated and provided with good current. Stagnant, warm, organically loaded water — tolerated easily by guppies — will not do for this species.

It is a sociable, schooling fish and should be kept in a group; ten or more is the recommended starting number, which also encourages more natural behaviour and better breeding prospects. As a powerful surface-dwelling swimmer it appreciates a well-lit tank with open swimming space and brisk flow, and a tight-fitting cover, since active surface fish in current are prone to jumping. Temperatures in the low-to-high 20s Celsius, near-neutral to slightly alkaline water and good hygiene suit it; the precise numbers matter less than stability and cleanliness.

Feeding is the other half of keeping it well: surface and aerial foods, fruit flies above all, are close to essential for long-term condition and for any hope of breeding. The species is rarely available and is usually captive-bred when it is, so sourcing healthy stock and committing to its higher husbandry standards are the realistic price of keeping it. For the right keeper it is a rewarding, jewel-eyed alternative to the everyday livebearers.

Conservation

Priapella compressa is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List. The assessment, by H. Espinosa Pérez, was carried out on 12 March 2018 and published in 2019 (e.T191770A2002546); the population trend is recorded as unknown. The Data Deficient listing means that, while the species is clearly restricted to a small set of streams in southern Mexico, there is not yet enough information on its distribution, abundance and trend to place it confidently in a threatened or non-threatened category.

The assessment does flag real concerns. The fish occupies headwater and stream habitats near the ruins of Palenque, where tourist and recreational activity contributes to habitat degradation. Although it occurs within the Palenque protected area, the assessment notes that management there is insufficient to guarantee the species' habitat. More survey data are explicitly needed before a more definite conservation category can be assigned.

For aquarists the practical implications are twofold. First, the species' specialised dependence on clean, fast, oxygen-rich water makes it inherently sensitive to the headwater degradation, siltation and pollution that accompany human pressure on its small range — so its conservation status deserves attention even in the absence of a formal threatened listing. Second, because the trade is supplied largely by captive-bred stock, maintaining and sharing healthy aquarium lines is itself a small contribution to the security of a fish whose wild status remains genuinely uncertain.
