Taxonomy & naming
Priapella chamulae was described in 2006 by Manfred Schartl, Manfred K. Meyer and Bernd Wilde, in the journal Zoologische Abhandlungen (Dresden), from material collected in the upper Río Grijalva drainage of Tabasco, Mexico (the original description appears under the spelling Priapella chamula). The genus Priapella, erected by Regan in 1913, is a small Atlantic-slope group within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and contains a handful of species distributed across south-eastern Mexico and adjacent Guatemala. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the species sits in the subfamily Poeciliinae alongside the other livebearing toothcarps.
The authors diagnosed P. chamulae from its congeners primarily on gonopodial characters — the structure of the male intromittent organ being the standard currency of poeciliid systematics. In this species, ray 3 of the gonopodium bears a well-developed, semicircularly bent membranous hook and a well-developed subdistal plate-like membranous process, and the gonopodium is comparatively short (a standard-length to gonopodium-length ratio of roughly 3.3 to 3.5). It is also among the larger-bodied Priapella. Meristics recorded in the original material include 9–10 dorsal soft rays, 10 anal soft rays, 30–31 vertebrae and 10–12 gill rakers.
The genus name Priapella derives from Priapus, the classical god of fertility and procreation — a diminutive allusion to the gonopodium that defines the livebearers. The specific epithet chamulae honours the Chamula, an Indigenous people of central Chiapas and the Tabasco border country near the species' type locality; it is a name drawn from a people rather than a true individual eponym.
Morphology
Priapella chamulae is a small, slender, stream-adapted livebearer. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2 in SL for males or unsexed fish, making it a large-sized member of its genus, though still a small fish by any general measure. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of swift-water poeciliids, built for holding station and darting in moving water rather than the deeper-bodied build of still-water guppies and mollies.
As in all Priapella, the most conspicuous live feature is the eye: members of this genus are known to aquarists for bright, reflective blue or blue-green irides, the basis of the trade name "sapphire toothcarp." The fins are unornamented — there are no extended or filamentous rays — and overall coloration in wild fish is comparatively plain and silvery, with the eye providing the highlight rather than body pigment.
The defining sexually dimorphic structure is the male gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays and used to transfer sperm internally. In P. chamulae the gonopodium is relatively short and carries the diagnostic hooked ray-3 membrane and subdistal process noted in the original description. Females lack the gonopodium and, as is usual in the family, are the larger and deeper-bodied sex. Detailed quantitative comparisons of male and female coloration are not documented for this species.
Habitat
Priapella chamulae is endemic to Mexico, restricted to the upper Río Grijalva system on the Tabasco–Chiapas border. The type series was taken from a small brook, roughly half a metre to a metre wide, flowing into a tributary of the Río Tacotalpa within the Grijalva drainage — near a bridge on an unpaved road between Zunu y Patastal and Madrigal (Cuarta Sección), in the Tapijulapa–Jamapa region of Tabasco.
The collection habitat is characteristic of the genus: crystal-clear, fast-flowing water with no aquatic vegetation, a substrate of gravel and sand, and the brook set in a deep, fully shaded indentation in the landscape. Recorded conditions at the time of collection (late afternoon) were a water temperature of 79 °F, conductivity of about 360 µS, pH 8.0 and total hardness of roughly 10–15. This is cool-to-warm, hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated running water — the antithesis of the warm, weedy ponds favoured by guppies.
The species shares its stream with a community of other small fishes. Sympatric poeciliids recorded at the type locality include Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus, a Gambusia species, Heterophallus milleri and Poecilia mexicana, alongside the widespread Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus. The restricted, headwater nature of the known range is part of what makes the species' conservation status hard to assess.
Feeding
No species-specific diet study is available for Priapella chamulae, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its genus and habitat. Priapella are generally regarded as insectivorous micro-predators, taking small aquatic invertebrates and drifting insect material from the water column of their fast streams — consistent with the clear, plant-free, gravel-bottomed brooks they occupy, where drifting prey rather than dense algal grazing would dominate the food supply. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.0, in line with a small-invertebrate diet.
Hobbyist observation — anecdotal rather than authoritative — additionally reports Priapella from this region behaving as willing algae grazers in captivity. Taken together, the available signals point to an opportunistic small-omnivore leaning insectivorous, the typical pattern for swift-water poeciliids, though the precise wild diet of P. chamulae has not been quantified.
In an aquarium setting the genus is reported to do well on the standard livebearer fare — small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, supplemented with quality flake or micro-pellets and a vegetable component. As with most stream poeciliids, several small feedings suit a near-constant grazer better than a single large meal, but specific feeding recommendations for this species rest on genus-level experience rather than documented trials.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Priapella chamulae practises internal fertilisation: the male transfers sperm to the female by means of the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays. A distinctive feature of the genus Priapella, noted in the broader literature, is that the males do not perform the elaborate courtship displays seen in guppies and many relatives; instead they rely on thrusting (forced or "sneak") copulation attempts, making mating in this group a contest of male persistence rather than of female-choice display.
The gonopodium of P. chamulae is comparatively short and bears the species-diagnostic hardware — a semicircularly bent membranous hook on ray 3 and a subdistal plate-like membranous process — structures that, as in other poeciliids, function in coupling and sperm transfer during these brief copulations. As is general for the family, females are presumed able to store sperm internally and produce successive broods from stored sperm, though this has not been specifically demonstrated for the species.
Beyond the morphology of the gonopodium, the mating system of P. chamulae is essentially undocumented at the species level. Reproductive behaviour for the genus is broadly described as polygynandrous, but no detailed observations of courtship, mate competition or seasonal timing exist for this particular fish — the data are sparse, and any finer account would be extrapolation from congeners.
Breeding
Priapella chamulae is viviparous (livebearing), the reproductive mode universal to its subfamily. Following internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Development in Priapella is understood to be lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk laid down in the egg before fertilisation, rather than by a placenta-like maternal supply, which is the ancestral and most widespread condition in the family.
Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, a specialisation seen in some poeciliids such as Heterandria and Poeciliopsis — has not been documented in Priapella, and there is no indication it occurs in P. chamulae; the species is best regarded as a conventional single-brood livebearer until shown otherwise. Concrete reproductive figures are simply not available: gestation length, brood size and the size of newborn fry have not been published for this species, and the genus's wild reproductive seasonality in its headwater streams is likewise unrecorded.
What can be said is general and cautious. As in other livebearing poeciliids, the fry of P. chamulae would emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed at once, and — by the pattern of the family — would benefit from cover, since adult livebearers commonly predate their own young. Anything more precise would be guesswork; for this species the breeding biology remains genuinely data-sparse.
In the aquarium
Priapella chamulae is an uncommon fish in the hobby, kept mainly by livebearer specialists rather than offered in the general trade, and husbandry guidance for it is drawn largely from experience with the genus as a whole. The cardinal point is that these are stream fish, not pond fish: they come from cool, fast, crystal-clear, hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water, and they reward an aquarium that mimics those conditions — strong flow, brisk filtration, high oxygen, scrupulous cleanliness and stable, alkaline chemistry around pH 8 with moderate hardness.
Water temperature should reflect the cooler, running-water origin of the species; the type locality sat at 79 °F, and Priapella generally do better in the cooler part of the tropical range than in the warm, still conditions guppies tolerate. They are active, lively swimmers best kept as a group with good current and open swimming space over a sand-and-gravel substrate. Because males rely on thrusting rather than display, keeping more than one female per male helps spread male attention, as it does with other gonopodium-thrusting livebearers.
Reputable references rate the genus as an intermediate-difficulty keeper rather than a beginner's fish — not because the fish is delicate in itself, but because it demands the flow, oxygenation and water quality of a clean stream and will decline in the warm, low-flow community tank that suits many other livebearers. For a keeper who can supply moving, hard, alkaline water and a varied small-invertebrate diet, P. chamulae is a rewarding and distinctive blue-eyed livebearer; for one who cannot, it is a poor choice.
Conservation
Priapella chamulae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 27 March 2018 (assessment ID e.T191769A2002539). The Data Deficient category reflects that there is insufficient information to make a direct or indirect assessment of the species' risk of extinction — an unsurprising outcome for a fish that was only described in 2006 and is known from a restricted headwater area of the upper Grijalva system.
The combination of a small, localised range in a single drainage and a near-total absence of population data is precisely what leaves the species in conservation limbo: it cannot be confidently called secure, nor confidently called threatened. Headwater stream specialists of this kind are, in general, vulnerable to localised pressures such as deforestation of the shaded catchments they depend on, water extraction, pollution and changes in flow, but no species-specific threat assessment for P. chamulae has been published.
The responsible reading is caution rather than alarm. What the Data Deficient listing really signals is a need for survey and monitoring of this narrowly distributed Mexican endemic, and for protection of the clear, fast headwater brooks it occupies, rather than any confirmed decline. Until basic distribution and population work is done, the conservation status of the species is best described as genuinely unknown.
