Heterophallus milleri is a small, plainly coloured live-bearing toothcarp endemic to the tributaries of the Río Grijalva basin in the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas. A member of the mosquitofish tribe Gambusiini, it is rarely seen in the aquarium hobby and remains poorly documented in the wild — assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List for want of distribution, population and threat data. Taxonomy & naming

Heterophallus milleri was described by the Austrian aquarist-ichthyologist Alfred Radda in 1987. The genus Heterophallus is a small group within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and sits in the subfamily Poeciliinae, tribe Gambusiini, alongside the true mosquitofishes of the genus Gambusia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, treating Heterophallus milleri Radda, 1987 as the accepted combination; FishBase and the IUCN follow the same usage, listing the species under the common name "Grijalva gambusia."

The specific epithet honours Robert Rush Miller (1916–2003), the American ichthyologist and conservationist whose work on the freshwater fishes of Mexico — culminating in the monograph Freshwater Fishes of Mexico (Miller, Minckley & Norris, 2005) — remains the standard reference for the region's ichthyofauna. The common names attached to the species both reference the Grijalva basin to which it is endemic and its membership in the mosquitofish lineage; behavioural-ecology papers that have used the fish as a study model refer to it as the "Grijalva mosquitofish."

As a gambusiin, Heterophallus is anatomically and reproductively typical of the tribe — small body, no nuptial colour to speak of, and the modified anal-fin intromittent organ that defines the livebearers. Generic limits within Gambusiini have been revised repeatedly over the decades, and the relationship of Heterophallus to Gambusia and allied genera continues to be discussed, but the species itself is well-circumscribed and stable.

Morphology

Heterophallus milleri is a small, unassuming livebearer in the general mould of a mosquitofish: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a flattened dorsal profile and an upturned mouth suited to feeding at and just below the surface. FishBase records no maximum-length or maturity figures for the species — the size fields on its summary are blank — so a precise maximum length is not available from the cached sources; the fish is, however, a small gambusiin in the order of a few centimetres rather than a large poeciliid, and the data on body size here are sparse.

Colouration is plain. Unlike the gaudy guppies and platies of the trade, gambusiins of this kind are silvery to olive-grey, often with little more than fine scale outlining and a faint lateral marking, which is part of why Heterophallus has never gained a foothold in the ornamental hobby. As in all poeciliids the sexes differ: males are smaller and bear the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, while females are larger and deeper-bodied, particularly when gravid.

Life-history work on the species reported that male body size is normally distributed within populations, with no obvious split into the large- and small-bodied male morphs seen in some other poeciliids — that is, there is no pronounced alternative-tactic size dimorphism among males in the populations sampled.

Habitat

The species is endemic to tributaries of the Río Grijalva basin in southern Mexico, in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas. It has been reported from the Pichucalco, Ixtapangajoya, Puyacatengo, Tacotalpa and Teapa rivers and from the lowland Tabascal Plain region — a warm, humid tropical lowland drainage flowing toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Within these waters Heterophallus milleri occupies permanent rivers, streams and creeks as well as freshwater marshes and pools, from reaches with moderate current to calmer backwaters, typically keeping near shore. Observations cited in the IUCN assessment place the fish over bottoms of boulders, rock, gravel, sand and mud generally lacking vegetation, with depths of roughly 8–15 ft recorded at occurrence sites. Reported water conditions are warm and slightly alkaline — temperatures of about 81–82 °F and a pH near 7.5 (Miller et al. 2005).

This is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of the tropical lowlands, and its preference for warm, near-neutral-to-alkaline water with current and clean, often unvegetated substrates is consistent with the broader gambusiin pattern of occupying productive, well-oxygenated lowland creeks.

Feeding

Heterophallus milleri is at least partly insectivorous. The field study of its natural history found insects forming a component of the diet, marking it as a carnivore/insectivore that takes aquatic and terrestrial arthropods — a feeding habit shared with the mosquitofishes to which it is related, and the basis of the "mosquitofish" common name applied to the genus. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.0, consistent with a small predator of invertebrates rather than a herbivore or detritivore.

Like other surface- and midwater-oriented gambusiins, it is well placed to take insect larvae and small invertebrates drifting in the current and dropping onto the water, and an opportunistic mix of aquatic and terrestrial prey is the most defensible reading of its diet. Beyond the insectivorous signal from the life-history study, finer dietary detail — proportions of prey types, seasonal shifts — is not available in the cached sources and should be regarded as data-sparse.

No species-specific captive-feeding regime is documented; were it kept, the generic gambusiin expectation would be small live and frozen invertebrate foods supplemented by fine prepared foods, but this is an inference from tribe-level norms rather than a recorded husbandry account.

Mating

Reproduction in Heterophallus milleri is internal, as in all poeciliids. Males inseminate females using the gonopodium — the intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — rather than by external spawning, and fertilisation and subsequent embryonic development take place inside the female. This is the defining reproductive feature of the New World livebearers and of the mosquitofish tribe Gambusiini in particular.

The species has served as a model in behavioural-ecology studies of mate choice, where it is referred to as the Grijalva mosquitofish. That work examined "audience effects" — the finding that males alter their individual mating preferences when another male is present as an audience — and concluded that male mate-choice copying is unlikely to be a major factor in this species. Such studies confirm the typical gambusiin pattern of persistent male mating activity and internal insemination via the gonopodium.

The life-history study reported a female-skewed tertiary (adult) sex ratio in the populations sampled, a common condition among small livebearers, and found no evidence of distinct large- and small-male mating morphs. Together these observations sketch a conventional gambusiin mating system: small, plain males courting and attempting insemination of the more numerous females, with reproduction proceeding internally and continuously rather than in discrete spawning events.

Breeding

Heterophallus milleri is viviparous — a true livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The detailed life-history study of the species found that females produce small offspring and carry a single clutch or litter at a time, meaning the species does not exhibit superfetation, the overlapping of successive broods at different developmental stages that occurs in some other poeciliids.

Embryonic provisioning is predominantly lecithotrophic: developing embryos rely chiefly on yolk laid down before fertilisation, with only modest additional provisioning from the mother during gestation. The study quantified this with a matrotrophy index of about 0.73 — well short of the strongly matrotrophic, placenta-like provisioning seen in some livebearers, and indicating a species that is largely yolk-dependent with only limited maternal supplementation. In life-history terms it is a small-offspring, single-litter, mostly lecithotrophic gambusiin.

The honest summary is that this is a conservation- and research-interest species rather than an aquarium subject, and the cached record does not support detailed husbandry guidance. Conservation

The fish is a narrow-range endemic confined to tributaries of the Río Grijalva basin in Tabasco and Chiapas, and restricted geographic ranges of this kind can make lowland freshwater fishes vulnerable to habitat alteration, pollution and water extraction even where no immediate threat has been quantified. The assessment notes that the species may appear in the ornamental aquarium trade, but considers the impact of wild collection on the population likely to be minimal.

The practical conservation message is that Heterophallus milleri needs basic field data more than anything else: targeted survey of its distribution, population status and the condition of its Grijalva-basin habitats would be required to move it off the Data Deficient list in either direction. Until then it remains a poorly known endemic whose status is genuinely uncertain.
