Taxonomy & naming
Limia miragoanensis was described by the Cuban-American ichthyologist Luis René Rivas in 1980, originally under the genus Poecilia as Poecilia miragoanensis, from material collected in Lake Miragoâne (Étang de Miragoâne) in the Département du Sud of south-western Haiti. The species was subsequently placed in the genus Limia, the West Indian livebearers, where it is treated today. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; FishBase and the IUCN both list the fish as Limia miragoanensis (Rivas, 1980), the authority parentheses reflecting its original assignment to a different genus.
Limia is a genus of small poeciliids centred on the Greater Antilles, with a particularly dense concentration of species in Hispaniola. Lake Miragoâne alone hosts a flock of endemic Limia — alongside L. miragoanensis sit such species as L. islai, L. fuscomaculata, L. grossidens, L. garnieri and L. mandibularis, several of them described comparatively recently. This concentration of closely related, single-lake endemics is what makes the Miragoâne assemblage a celebrated example of in-situ radiation among livebearing fishes, comparable in kind, if not in scale, to the cichlid flocks of the African rift lakes.
The genus name Limia derives from the Latin limus, meaning mud, a reference by Poey (1854) to the muddy-bottom feeding habits of these fishes. The species epithet miragoanensis is straightforwardly toponymic, naming the lake — Miragoâne — to which the fish is restricted. Historically several of the striped Miragoâne Limia were confused with the better-known L. nigrofasciata, and untangling them has required careful morphological work; species-level identification within the flock remains a task for specialists.
Morphology
Limia miragoanensis is a small fish showing the sexual size dimorphism typical of the poeciliids: males reach roughly 1 in standard length, while females grow larger, to about 1.5 in SL. As in other Limia the female is the deeper-bodied, plainer sex, and the male the smaller. FishBase records a length-weight relationship for the species (a ≈ 0.00851, b ≈ 3.15 on total length) and a trophic level near 3.0, consistent with a small omnivore.
The defining male feature, shared across the family, is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm to the female internally. Females lack this structure and instead carry a deeper abdomen, darkening at the rear when gravid. Detailed published colour and meristic description specific to this species is sparse outside the original Rivas account; like its lake-mates it is a modestly patterned, somewhat striped fish, and members of the flock have historically been confused with one another on appearance alone.
Beyond the size and gonopodial dimorphism, species-specific morphometric data for L. miragoanensis are limited in the accessible literature. The site records the figures that trace to FishBase and the original description; finer distinctions separating it from its congeners in the lake rest on specialist taxonomic comparisons rather than on features an aquarist can read at a glance.
Habitat
Limia miragoanensis is endemic to a single body of water: Étang de Miragoâne, a small freshwater lake in the Département du Sud of south-western Haiti, with the type locality at the northern to north-eastern end of the lake. The species is freshwater, demersal and non-migratory, living in a tropical, closed-basin lake of roughly 9 to 25 square kilometres. Its entire global range is this one lake, a degree of restriction that is the central fact of both its biology and its conservation status.
Lake Miragoâne is a hard, alkaline, warm tropical water body, and it functions as an evolutionary island: its isolation is precisely what has allowed an endemic Limia flock to diversify within it. The lake's fishes share the basin with one another, and the several Limia species partition it among themselves. Because the system is closed, conditions in the lake — water level, clarity, vegetation and chemistry — translate directly into the living space available to the fish, with no refuge population anywhere else.
That single-lake dependence makes the habitat the species' chief vulnerability. The lake faces habitat degradation, pressure on water levels from extraction, and the effects of surrounding human activity. Any sustained decline in the extent or quality of the lake is, for L. miragoanensis, a decline in the only habitat it has — the reasoning that underpins its Red List criteria.
Feeding
Limia miragoanensis is a small omnivore. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0, and the genus name Limia — from the Latin for mud — itself records the muddy-bottom, detritus-grazing feeding habits of these fishes. In the lake it would take the mixed diet typical of small Limia: aufwuchs and algae scraped from surfaces, small aquatic invertebrates, and organic detritus from the substrate.
Species-specific dietary studies for L. miragoanensis are not available in the accessible sources, so the picture here is necessarily a genus-level one. What can be said with confidence is that, like its relatives, it is a generalist micro-grazer rather than a specialist, feeding low on the food web and taking whatever small plant and animal matter the lake bottom and water column provide.
In captivity, where the species is kept chiefly as a conservation holding, Limia accept a standard small-livebearer diet: good-quality flake and micro-pellets with a meaningful share of algal or vegetable matter, supplemented by small live and frozen foods. A diet weighted toward plant and algal material reflects their natural grazing better than a purely carnivorous one.
Mating
Reproduction in Limia miragoanensis is internal, as in all poeciliids. The male uses the gonopodium — the modified anal fin acting as an intromittent organ — to transfer sperm directly to the female; there is no external spawning and no egg-laying. This internal fertilisation is the family's defining reproductive trait and the reason the group is known as the livebearers.
Males of Limia pursue and court females rather than holding territories, and as in other poeciliids females are able to store viable sperm internally, so a single mating can fuel more than one successive brood. Detailed courtship behaviour specific to L. miragoanensis is not documented in the accessible literature; the account here reflects the shared reproductive biology of the genus rather than species-specific observation.
One behaviour relevant to mating is of particular conservation importance: the several Limia species sharing Lake Miragoâne interbreed readily in captivity. Hobby and conservation breeders therefore keep them strictly as single-species groups, because hybridisation would erode the genetic integrity that makes each endemic worth preserving. The same readiness to cross underscores how closely related the members of this young species flock remain.
Breeding
Limia miragoanensis is viviparous, giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Within the genus the embryos are lecithotrophic — nourished by the yolk of the egg rather than by a placental connection to the mother — which distinguishes Limia from the more matrotrophic poeciliids. Gestation in Limia runs on the order of four to six weeks, and broods are modest, roughly ten to forty fry, with the larger figures from larger, well-conditioned females. Superfetation, the carrying of overlapping broods at different stages, is not typical of Limia, unlike some Heterandria and Poeciliopsis.
These breeding figures are genus-level Limia generalisations rather than published L. miragoanensis-specific data, which are sparse; they should be read as a reasonable expectation for the species rather than measured values for it. The newborn fry emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed at once, and they need cover from the outset, since adult livebearers will take fry given the chance.
In a conservation-breeding context the practical priorities are clear: keep the species in pure single-species groups to avoid hybridisation with lake-mates, provide dense planting or refuge for the fry, and maintain the hard, warm, alkaline water the genus favours. Captive lines of Miragoâne Limia are maintained partly as an insurance population precisely because the wild source is so precarious.
In the aquarium
Limia miragoanensis is a small, peaceful livebearer kept far more for conservation than for ornament. Care follows the general Limia template: warm tropical water around 75–82 °F, hard and alkaline chemistry, and an omnivorous diet weighted toward algal and vegetable matter. These figures are genus-level guidance — species-specific aquarium data for this fish are limited — but they describe conditions the Miragoâne Limia tolerate well, matching the hard-water lake they come from.
The single most important husbandry rule for this species is also a conservation rule: keep it as a pure, single-species group. Because the Lake Miragoâne Limia interbreed so readily, mixing species in one tank produces hybrids and destroys the genetic value of the stock. Responsible keepers therefore dedicate a tank to one species, source fish of known provenance, and avoid casual mixing of the flock.
For the aquarist this is best understood as a fish to keep deliberately and carefully rather than casually. It is undemanding in its basic needs — small, hardy, easy to feed — but its real significance lies in being a living representative of a critically endangered, single-lake endemic. Keeping and breeding it well, and keeping the line pure, is itself a contribution to the species' survival.
Conservation
Limia miragoanensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 2 June 2020. The listing is driven by the species' extreme range restriction — it is endemic to the single Lake Miragoâne — combined with a continuing decline in the quality and extent of that habitat. With its entire world confined to one lake, both its extent of occurrence and area of occupancy fall within the thresholds for the highest category of threat.
The pressures on the lake are human: habitat degradation, extraction and water-level pressure, and the broader effects of activity around the basin. A closed, single-lake system offers the fish no refuge — there is no second population to fall back on if conditions in Miragoâne deteriorate. This is the recurring vulnerability of the whole Miragoâne Limia flock, several members of which share the same precarious circumstance. CITES and CMS list the species as Not Evaluated; the IUCN remains the operative conservation authority.
Against this backdrop, ex-situ conservation breeding has real weight. Hobby and institutional programmes maintain pure captive lines of the Lake Miragoâne Limia as insurance against loss in the wild, which is why the prohibition on hybridising the species in captivity matters so much. For an endemic this narrowly distributed, a well-kept, genetically intact captive population is not a curiosity but a hedge against extinction.
