The blackbarred limia is a small, characterful livebearer from a single lake in south-western Haiti — and a vivid example of how much can ride on one body of water. Limia nigrofasciata is best known to aquarists as the "humpbacked limia": mature males develop a steeply arched back and an oversized, sail-like dorsal fin that lend them an almost cartoonish profile, set against pale flanks crossed by a row of dark vertical bars. It belongs to the Limia species-flock centred on Lake Miragoâne, a Caribbean evolutionary hotspot now under severe pressure, and the IUCN lists the species as Critically Endangered. Hardy and prolific in the aquarium yet imperilled in the wild, it is exactly the kind of fish that conservation-minded hobbyists work to keep going.

Taxonomy & naming

Limia nigrofasciata was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1913. It sits within the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers that include the guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails — and within the genus Limia, a primarily Caribbean radiation of small livebearing toothcarps. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Limia nigrofasciata Regan, 1913 as the valid name. The genus Limia has at times been merged into the broader genus Poecilia, and older aquarium and scientific literature can be found referring to these fishes under Poecilia; current usage recognises Limia as a distinct genus.

The genus name Limia derives from the Latin limus, meaning "mud," a reference Poey coined in 1854 to the muddy-bottom feeding habits of these fishes. The species epithet nigrofasciata is straightforward Latin — niger, "black," and fasciatus, "banded" or "barred" — describing the dark vertical bars along the flanks that give the fish its English name, the blackbarred limia. In the hobby it is at least as often called the humpbacked limia, after the arched dorsal profile that older males develop.

The species belongs to a notable cluster of Limia endemic to Lake Miragoâne in south-western Haiti, one of the richest single-lake livebearer radiations known. That tight endemism is central to the fish's identity and to its conservation status: like its congeners, L. nigrofasciata is found naturally in a very small geographic area, which makes it both scientifically interesting and acutely vulnerable.

Morphology

Limia nigrofasciata is a small livebearer, reaching roughly 2 in in standard length — FishBase records about 2 in SL for males and 2 in SL for females — making the two sexes similar in maximum length but otherwise strongly dimorphic in shape. The body is comparatively deep and laterally compressed, pale silvery to olive or tan, and marked along the flanks by a series of dark vertical bars, the feature behind the "blackbarred" name. Fins are often touched with yellow, and well-conditioned fish in good light can show a warm golden cast.

The most distinctive feature is the development of mature males. As males age they take on an increasingly arched, humped dorsal profile and develop an enlarged, elongated dorsal fin that can be carried raised like a sail — the basis of the "humpbacked limia" name. This exaggerated body and finnage is a display structure, most pronounced in dominant older males. Females remain more conventionally shaped, with a deeper belly, especially when gravid.

As in all poeciliids, the surest sex difference is the male's gonopodium — the anal fin modified into a slender, mobile intromittent organ used to transfer sperm internally. Males are typically slimmer through the body than females once the gonopodium and the humped dorsal profile are evident, while females are rounder and, when carrying young, show a darkened area toward the rear of the abdomen.

Habitat

Limia nigrofasciata is endemic to Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola, where it is associated with the Lake Miragoâne system in the country's south-west. Lake Miragoâne is a small freshwater lake — on the order of only a few to a couple of dozen square kilometres — that nonetheless harbours an unusually concentrated flock of endemic Limia species. The fish is a freshwater, demersal, non-migratory tropical species that lives in and around the lake's varied bottoms and vegetated margins.

The water is warm and hard. FishBase gives a temperature range of about 77–82 °F, a pH of roughly 7.0–8.0, and hardness around 9–19 dH — the neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard profile typical of many Caribbean limestone-influenced waters. The species reportedly occurs in large schools over a range of substrate types, with juveniles sheltering among aquatic plants.

This extremely restricted natural range is the defining ecological fact about the species. Confined essentially to one small lake basin, the fish has nowhere to retreat to when that single habitat is degraded — a vulnerability it shares with the other Miragoâne Limia and one that underlies its Critically Endangered listing.

Feeding

The blackbarred limia is an omnivore with a strong leaning toward plant matter and detritus, consistent with the genus name's reference to muddy-bottom feeding. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of around 2.9, indicating a diet dominated by algae, aufwuchs (the film of algae and micro-organisms on surfaces), detritus and small invertebrates gleaned from the substrate and vegetation rather than active predation on larger prey.

In the aquarium this translates into an easy, undemanding feeder that does best on a varied diet with a good vegetable and algal component. Quality flake and small pellets with vegetable content, supplemented by blanched vegetable matter, spirulina-based foods, and modest amounts of small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, keep the fish in colour and breeding condition. A planted tank that develops a natural growth of algae suits the species well, letting it graze in a manner close to its wild habit.

As with other small, near-constant grazers, several small feedings suit it better than one heavy meal, and a vegetable-forward diet matters more than rich protein. Overfeeding and the resulting water-quality problems are a more common husbandry error than under-nutrition with this hardy little fish.

Mating

Reproduction in Limia nigrofasciata is internal, the defining feature of the poeciliid livebearers. Males fertilise females using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, which swings forward to deliver sperm during a brief contact. As in related livebearers, females can store viable sperm internally, so a single successful mating can fuel several successive broods without further contact with a male.

Courtship is a male affair. Mature males — particularly the dominant, most strongly humped individuals — display to females, using the enlarged sail-like dorsal fin and the arched body profile as signals; the exaggerated finnage and back are thought to function in this display and in competition among males. Males pursue females persistently, and as in many poeciliids a mix of overt courtship display and quicker sneaking attempts is to be expected.

Because males harass females more or less continuously, keeping a sex ratio skewed toward females helps spread that attention and reduces stress on any single fish. The pronounced sexual dimorphism — the humped, sail-finned males versus the plainer, deeper-bodied females — is itself a product of this mating system, in which conspicuous males are favoured by competition and female attention.

Breeding

Limia nigrofasciata is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports broods of roughly 20–30 young, and hobbyist accounts describe females producing on the order of 10–25 fry at intervals of about a month, with a gestation of roughly four weeks — figures broadly consistent with one another. (Hobby-sourced specifics should be treated as soft data.) Unlike some poeciliids, this species is not noted for marked superfetation — the carrying of multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — and is best described as a straightforward, single-brood-at-a-time livebearer.

The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed immediately. As with most livebearers, adults — including the mother — will eat fry given the chance, so dense planting, floating cover, or moving gravid females to a separate setup all improve survival. The young hide naturally among vegetation in the wild, and replicating that cover in the aquarium is the simplest way to raise good numbers.

The species is reliably prolific in captivity and rated as having high biological resilience, with a population doubling time estimated at under 15 months. Fry grow steadily on finely powdered foods, newly hatched brine shrimp and the natural grazing a mature planted tank provides, and males begin to show their characteristic dorsal development and gonopodium as they mature. This combination of fecundity and ease makes the species a strong candidate for conservation breeding in the hobby.

In the aquarium

The blackbarred limia is a hardy, peaceful and rewarding aquarium fish, well suited to keepers who want something less ubiquitous than guppies or platies but no more difficult. It is an active, sociable, schooling species best kept in a group, and it shows to best advantage in a well-planted tank where the males can display and the fish can graze on natural algal growth. Because males pursue females persistently, a group weighted toward females reduces harassment.

Water chemistry should track the species' wild profile: neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water suits it well, broadly pH 7.0–8.0 and hardness around 9–19 dH, at temperatures of about 77–82 °F. The fish is tolerant and forgiving, valuing stability and clean water over precise numbers. It is peaceful enough for a calm community of similarly sized, gentle fishes, though boisterous or much larger tankmates are best avoided.

One of the most compelling reasons to keep this species is its conservation status: it is a Critically Endangered, single-lake endemic that breeds readily in captivity, making aquarium populations a genuine hedge against loss in the wild. Hobbyist and conservation-breeding networks treat the Miragoâne Limia as priority species for exactly this reason, and a keeper willing to maintain and distribute healthy stock contributes directly to that effort.

Conservation

Limia nigrofasciata is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 2 June 2020. That listing reflects the species' extremely restricted range — essentially the single small Lake Miragoâne system in south-western Haiti — combined with continuing decline in the quality of that habitat. With a natural distribution confined to one small lake basin, the fish has no refuge from pressures acting on that water body.

Lake Miragoâne and its catchment face the familiar threats of a small tropical lake under intense human pressure: deforestation of the surrounding hills, soil erosion and siltation, pollution and agricultural runoff, and the broader degradation that accompanies dense land use in a watershed. Because the lake hosts a whole flock of endemic Limia, these pressures threaten not just one species but a concentrated pocket of Caribbean fish diversity. The species is not listed under CITES or CMS; the conservation concern is habitat-driven rather than trade-driven.

For this species the aquarium hobby has an unusually constructive role to play. Limia nigrofasciata is prolific and undemanding in captivity, and organised conservation-breeding programmes treat the Miragoâne limias as priority species precisely because ex-situ populations can buffer against catastrophic loss in the wild. The responsible aquarist's contribution is to keep healthy, well-documented lines, share stock through reputable channels, and never release captive fish into local waters — keeping the captive safety net robust while the wild habitat remains at risk.
