Taxonomy & naming
Limia pauciradiata was described by Luis René Rivas in 1980. It is placed in the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers — and within the West Indian genus Limia, which was erected by Felipe Poey in 1854. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and FishBase records the species under SpecCode 27710 with the English common name "Few-rayed limia," a direct rendering of the specific epithet.
The genus name Limia derives from the Latin limus, meaning mud, a reference to the muddy-bottom feeding habits Poey observed in the original Cuban species. The epithet pauciradiata is Latin for "few-rayed" (paucus, few + radiatus, rayed), pointing to a reduced fin-ray count that distinguished the species in Rivas's description. Limia is sometimes treated as a subgenus of Poecilia by authors who lump the two, but it is most often recognised as a distinct genus, and that is the usage followed here.
Limia is overwhelmingly an Antillean group, with its centre of diversity on Hispaniola, where a cluster of narrow-range endemics — among them the humpbacked limia (L. nigrofasciata) and the more recently described tiger limia (L. islai) — occupy individual lakes and river systems. L. pauciradiata is one of these single-system Haitian endemics, and the principal published reference for it beyond the original description is the supplement to the Atlas of North American Freshwater Fishes (Lee, Platania & Burgess, 1983).
Morphology
Limia pauciradiata is a small fish that shows the sexual size dimorphism typical of poeciliids, with females considerably larger than males. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 1.5 in for males (and unsexed fish) against roughly 2 in SL for females — a substantial difference that, as in most livebearers, reflects the female's role in carrying developing young internally.
Detailed colour and meristic descriptions of this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and FishBase carries no photograph on file. The specific epithet itself encodes the one diagnostic feature that is well documented: a reduced ("few") fin-ray count relative to congeners, which formed part of Rivas's basis for separating it. As a Limia, it can be expected to have the deep-bodied, laterally compressed build of the genus, a single dorsal fin set well back, and a rounded caudal.
The defining male structure, shared across the live-bearing poeciliids, is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female. Beyond these general points, fine morphological detail for L. pauciradiata is data sparse, and this profile deliberately stops short of asserting colour-pattern specifics that the sources do not support.
Habitat
Limia pauciradiata is a Hispaniolan endemic with a strikingly narrow distribution: it is known only from the Grande Rivière du Nord (Grand Riviere du Nord) in north-eastern Haiti. This makes it a single-river-system endemic, the kind of pinpoint range that recurs again and again among the Limia of Hispaniola and that underpins both the scientific interest in the genus and the conservation concern over it.
The species is freshwater, demersal and non-migratory, living in a tropical regime. FishBase gives an associated water envelope of roughly 73–82 °F, with a pH of about 7.2–7.8 and a hardness range of around 10–30 dH — that is, warm, neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard to hard water, conditions consistent with the calcareous geology of much of the Greater Antilles and broadly typical of Limia habitats generally.
Because the documented range is so small and so little studied, the finer ecology of the species — its preferred microhabitats within the river, seasonal movements, and tolerance limits — remains essentially undescribed in the accessible literature. What can be said with confidence is that its entire known world is one northern-Haitian river, a fact that bears directly on its conservation status.
Feeding
No species-specific diet study for Limia pauciradiata appears in the accessible sources, but FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.9, which marks it as an omnivore leaning slightly toward animal matter rather than a strict herbivore or a higher-order predator. This is entirely in keeping with the genus: the name Limia itself was coined for the muddy-bottom, detritus-and-algae feeding habits of its relatives.
By analogy with better-studied congeners, L. pauciradiata can reasonably be expected to graze on algae and biofilm (aufwuchs), take detritus and the small invertebrates living within it, and opportunistically snap up tiny aquatic insects and crustaceans drifting in the water column. Such mixed, opportunistic micro-omnivory is the rule across the small Antillean livebearers.
Firm feeding data specific to this species is data sparse, and the points above are framed as the genus-level expectation rather than observations of L. pauciradiata in particular. In the absence of any hobby presence, there is likewise no documented captive feeding regimen for the species.
Mating
Like all members of the subfamily Poeciliinae, Limia pauciradiata reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that is the signature reproductive organ of the live-bearing toothcarps; there is no external spawning of eggs and no nest. In Limia generally, males court and pursue females, and fertilisation occurs internally, after which the female carries the developing young.
Species-specific mating behaviour — courtship displays, male tactics, female choice — has not been documented for L. pauciradiata in the accessible literature, and is presented here only at the genus level. Many poeciliids combine conspicuous male courtship display with female mate choice, and that broad pattern is the reasonable default expectation for a Limia, but the particulars for this species are unrecorded.
One point can be stated negatively but with confidence: superfetation — the ability of a female to carry two or more broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — is not a feature of Limia. It is documented in other poeciliid lineages such as Poeciliopsis and Heterandria, and in the goodeids, but not in this genus, so it should not be attributed to L. pauciradiata.
Breeding
Limia pauciradiata is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. As in Limia generally, the mode of nourishment is lecithotrophic — the embryos are sustained by yolk laid down in the egg, without the true matrotrophic placenta seen in some other poeciliid genera. The young are born as fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed from birth.
FishBase carries no populated maturity, gestation or fecundity figures for this species, so brood size and gestation length are not directly documented. By analogy with small Limia, gestation can be expected to run on the order of several weeks and broods to be modest in size — the small, regular broods characteristic of the genus rather than the very large broods of, say, a well-fed guppy. These are genus-level expectations, not measured values for L. pauciradiata, and the specific reproductive numbers remain data sparse.
FishBase rates the species' resilience as High, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the continuous, low-overhead livebearing reproduction typical of the family even where exact brood figures are unknown. As with its congeners, any captive-bred fry would be expected to need cover, since adult poeciliids — including the mother — commonly predate their own young; but there is no documented breeding programme for this species to draw on.
In the aquarium
Limia pauciradiata has, for practical purposes, no presence in the aquarium hobby. Targeted searches for care or breeding information return only its better-known Haitian congeners — the humpbacked limia (L. nigrofasciata) and the tiger limia (L. islai) — rather than any profile of this species. It is not established in the trade, and there is no documented body of keeper experience specific to it.
Were it ever maintained, the husbandry would by analogy follow that of other small Limia: warm water in the 73–82 °F range, hard and neutral-to-alkaline chemistry around pH 7.2–7.8 and 10–30 dH matching its native river, a varied micro-omnivore diet of small prepared, frozen and live foods plus grazeable algae, and a group rather than a pair, with cover for fry if breeding is the goal. These are reasonable defaults drawn from the genus, not species-tested recommendations.
The honest summary is that this is a fish of scientific and conservation record rather than of aquarium keeping. For an aquarist, its main interest lies in the broader story of the Hispaniolan Limia — a tight cluster of single-system endemics — rather than in any prospect of acquiring or breeding L. pauciradiata itself.
Conservation
Limia pauciradiata is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessment 125986623, species ID 125980979; assessed 12 May 2020). A Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population or threats to assign it a meaningful threat category — it is a statement about the gaps in our knowledge rather than a verdict that the species is secure.
That classification fits the species well. L. pauciradiata is known from a single river system in north-eastern Haiti, has been little studied since its 1980 description, and has effectively no monitoring behind it. A restricted, single-drainage endemic of this kind is inherently vulnerable to localised pressures — habitat degradation, water extraction, pollution and the introduction of non-native fishes are recurring threats to freshwater life in Haiti — yet without survey data the actual status of its population cannot be stated. CITES and CMS both list the species as Not Evaluated.
The responsible position is therefore one of caution: a narrow-range Antillean endemic with no confirmed protections and no population data should be treated as potentially at risk pending proper assessment, and the appropriate response is field survey and monitoring of the Grande Rivière du Nord rather than any assumption that Data Deficient implies safety.
