Limia yaguajali is a small, little-known live-bearing toothcarp endemic to the island of Hispaniola, where it was described in 1980 from the Río Yaguajal in the Dominican Republic. One of the roughly two dozen species of the Antillean genus Limia, it belongs to the same New World livebearer family as the guppies and mollies but is almost never seen in the aquarium hobby. Taxonomy & naming

Limia yaguajali was described by the Cuban-American ichthyologist Luis René Rivas in 1980, on the basis of material from the Río Yaguajal in the Dominican Republic. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Limia yaguajali Rivas, 1980 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Limia within the family Poeciliidae and the subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers. The species carries FishBase SpecCode 27720 and is catalogued by the California Academy of Sciences under species id 9055.

The genus Limia was erected by Felipe Poey in 1854 and comprises around two dozen species centred on the Greater Antilles, with the richest concentration on Hispaniola. Limia has at times been treated as a subgenus of Poecilia, reflecting how closely the Antillean livebearers are allied to the mainland guppies and mollies; most modern authors recognise it as a distinct genus. Within that group, L. yaguajali is one of several Hispaniolan endemics tied to particular river systems, and its close relationships among the island's many congeners remain incompletely resolved.

The genus name Limia derives from the Latin limus, meaning mud, a reference by Poey to the muddy-bottom feeding habits of these fishes. The specific epithet yaguajali is a toponym honouring the Río Yaguajal, the Dominican river that yielded the type series, as noted in the Eponym Dictionary of Fishes.

Morphology

Limia yaguajali is a small poeciliid showing the marked sexual size dimorphism typical of the genus. Males and unsexed specimens reach about 1.5 in standard length, while females are clearly larger, attaining roughly 2 in standard length, following the original measurements reported by Lee, Platania and Burgess (1983). As in other Limia, the female is the larger and more robust sex and the male the smaller.
