Taxonomy & naming
Phalloceros reisi was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Paulo H. F. Lucinda in 2008, in his monographic revision of the genus published in Neotropical Ichthyology ("Systematics and biogeography of the genus Phalloceros, with description of twenty-one new species"). For most of the twentieth century almost every spotted livebearer of this kind from south-eastern South America was lumped under a single name, Phalloceros caudimaculatus. Lucinda's revision broke that catch-all apart, showing that it concealed a radiation of narrowly distributed species separated chiefly by features of the male and female genital anatomy; P. reisi was one of the twenty-one new species he named in that work. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phalloceros reisi Lucinda, 2008 as a valid name within the genus Phalloceros, family Poeciliidae.
The family Poeciliidae is the great New World assemblage of internally fertilising, mostly live-bearing toothcarps — the guppies, mollies, swordtails, mosquitofishes and their kin. Phalloceros is a southern, largely Brazilian genus within this family; its members are small, lecithotrophic livebearers in which the male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium. Because the species of the genus look broadly alike in body shape and colour, the diagnostic characters that separate them are anatomical and minute, which is why a careful revision was needed to recognise forms like P. reisi at all.
The species epithet honours Roberto Esser dos Reis, the Brazilian ichthyologist, recognising his contributions to Neotropical ichthyology. The genus name combines the Greek phallos, "penis," with keras, "horn" — a reference to the hook-bearing intromittent organ of the males that defines and names the group.
Morphology
Phalloceros reisi is a small fish with the pronounced sexual size dimorphism typical of its genus. Males reach only about 1 in in standard length, while females grow considerably larger, to roughly 2 in SL. The background colour is plain — a light brown or yellow — rather than the saturated pattern of an ornamental livebearer, and the prepelvic scale margins lack the dark chromatophore borders seen in some relatives, leaving that region a clean yellow. Meristic counts recorded by Lucinda are 7 to 9 dorsal soft rays, 9 to 11 anal soft rays, and 31 to 32 vertebrae.
The lateral spotting is one of the more useful field characters. Large specimens carry a wide, square-shaped lateral spot, and there is no spot on the caudal peduncle. In adult females the lateral mark is reduced to a very narrow vertical bar, on the order of two scales wide horizontally and two to four scales tall — a thin dark stripe rather than a blotch. These pigment details, combined with the overall pale ground colour, give the species a subdued, cryptic appearance well suited to its small-stream habitat.
The characters that actually diagnose P. reisi against its many close congeners are anatomical and lie in the genitalia. In the male, the gonopodial appendix is asymmetrical, with the right half wider than the left; it lacks a right hook but bears a left hook whose tip is rectangular. In the female, the urogenital papilla is curved to the right and set laterally, and the border of the anal aperture is in contact with, or very close to, the first anal-fin ray. It is this combination — not colour or size — that defines the species.
Habitat
Phalloceros reisi is endemic to south-eastern Brazil, in the state of São Paulo. Its type region spans the headwaters of the rio Tietê, the rio Paraíba do Sul, and the rio Ribeira de Iguape, together with small coastal drainages of the state. This places the species across both Atlantic-slope coastal streams and inland upland tributaries — a mix of small, shallow freshwater habitats rather than large rivers or lakes.
FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of the tropical zone, consistent with the small streams, brooks and marginal pools that Phalloceros species generally occupy. Such waters are typically warm, shallow and well vegetated, with slow to moderate flow; the genus as a whole favours the quiet margins and densely planted shallows where small livebearers can shelter and graze. Precise physico-chemical measurements for P. reisi specifically are sparse in the primary literature, so any temperature, pH and hardness figures given here should be read as the broad tropical-lowland envelope expected for the genus rather than measured values for this species.
GBIF holds occurrence records for the species under taxon key 2350104, which together with the type-locality drainages give a usable picture of its distribution across the upper Tietê and Ribeira de Iguape systems and the São Paulo coastal streams for mapping purposes.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Phalloceros reisi has been published, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its size, body form and close relatives. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0, the level expected of a small omnivore. Like other small stream-dwelling poeciliids, it almost certainly takes a mixed diet of algae, diatoms and detritus together with small aquatic invertebrates, micro-crustaceans and insect larvae gleaned from vegetation, the substrate and the water column.
This opportunistic, omnivorous grazing habit is the norm across Phalloceros and the wider livebearer family. Small toothcarps of this kind are near-continuous feeders, working over plant surfaces and soft sediment for whatever edible material is available and adjusting the balance of plant and animal matter to local conditions. In the absence of direct dietary data for P. reisi, this generalised picture — algae and detritus supplemented with small invertebrate prey — is the most that can responsibly be said.
Mating
Reproduction in Phalloceros reisi follows the poeciliid pattern of internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ derived from elongated and specialised fin rays, which is used to transfer sperm directly into the female. In P. reisi this apparatus is finely structured and, as noted above, asymmetrical: the gonopodial appendix has a wider right half, lacks a right hook, and bears a rectangular-tipped left hook. These details are not merely diagnostic curiosities — the hooks and asymmetry are functional elements of the copulatory mechanism that the revision used to separate the species of the genus.
As in livebearers generally, mating is expected to be male-driven and more or less continuous rather than seasonally territorial. Small poeciliid males typically pursue females persistently and attempt insemination using the gonopodium, and females of many species in the family can store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to develop from a limited number of matings. Specific courtship behaviour for P. reisi has not been documented in the primary literature, so this account reflects the well-established reproductive biology of the family rather than observations unique to this species.
Breeding
Phalloceros reisi is a viviparous livebearer. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs; nourishment during gestation is lecithotrophic, drawn from yolk reserves laid down in the egg rather than supplied by the mother through a placenta-like structure. This is the standard mode for Phalloceros and for most of the Poeciliidae.
The marked size difference between the small males and the much larger females is the visible reproductive signature of the species — the larger female body accommodates the developing brood, while males invest in the specialised gonopodial anatomy instead of size. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the rapid maturation and steady, repeated brood production characteristic of small livebearers. Exact gestation length, brood size and frequency have not been reported for P. reisi specifically; by analogy with comparable small Phalloceros and other poeciliids, broods are likely modest in number and produced repeatedly under warm conditions, but no measured figures are available for this species.
In the aquarium
Phalloceros reisi is essentially a specialist's fish rather than a commercial ornamental. It is a plain, light-brown livebearer of interest mainly to livebearer hobbyists and to keepers who value correctly identified wild-type Phalloceros, and it is rarely if ever encountered in general aquarium shops. There is little published aquarium husbandry written for this species by name; what guidance exists is extrapolated from the keeping of Phalloceros caudimaculatus and similar small Brazilian livebearers.
Kept like its relatives, it would suit a small, warm, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration, dense vegetation and floating cover. A group skewed toward females helps spread the persistent attention of the males, and abundant planting gives newborn fry the cover they need, since adult livebearers will readily eat their own young. The fish's omnivorous appetite makes feeding straightforward — small flake and micro-foods supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates and an algal component. Because precise water-chemistry tolerances for P. reisi have not been published, an aquarist should aim for stable, clean, warm fresh water in the broad tropical range and prioritise water quality over chasing exact numbers.
Conservation
Phalloceros reisi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (species ID 187026; assessment dated 7 November 2018). The Least Concern status is corroborated by the IUCN status fields carried in FishBase and GBIF, both of which list the species as Least Concern.
Despite the favourable assessment, the species is a narrow-range endemic of São Paulo state, confined to the headwaters of the Tietê and Paraíba do Sul, the Ribeira de Iguape, and small coastal drainages. Restricted-range freshwater fishes of south-eastern Brazil inhabit one of the most heavily urbanised and industrialised regions of the country, where streams are exposed to pollution, abstraction, channelisation and habitat loss; the upper Tietê in particular drains the metropolitan area of São Paulo. A Least Concern listing reflects that the species is not currently judged to be at risk of extinction, but the combination of a small range and pressured habitat means its status is best regarded as worth monitoring rather than assured. As with all narrowly distributed livebearers, the responsible aquarist position is to keep correctly identified stock and never release fish into local waters.
