Poecilia kykesis is a sailfin molly of the lowland waters running from the Petén of northern Guatemala across the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. It is a member of the Poecilia latipinna species complex, and its scientific name carries an unusually candid origin: the epithet kykesis, from the Greek for "a mixing," was coined to settle the confusion created by two earlier fishes that had both ended up labelled petenensis. Behind the nomenclatural housekeeping is an ordinary, adaptable livebearer of brackish lagoons, lakes and coastal creeks — a robust molly that quietly fills the warm, slightly salty waters of the Usumacinta basin and the Yucatán.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia kykesis was established by Fred N. Poeser in 2002 as a replacement name (a nomen novum) for Mollienesia petenensis Günther, 1866. The need for a new name arose from a tangle of homonymy: Günther had described two distinct fishes from the Petén region, and the name petenensis had been applied in a way that became untenable once Mollienesia and Poecilia were treated as a single genus. Rather than perpetuate the ambiguity, Poeser introduced kykesis for Günther's Mollienesia petenensis while redescribing, revalidating and designating a lectotype for the separate Poecilia petenensis Günther, 1866. The work was published as "Poecilia kykesis nom. nov., a new name for Mollienesia petenensis Günther, 1866, and redescription, revalidation and designation of a lectotype for Poecilia petenensis Günther, 1866 (Teleostei: Poeciliidae)" in Contributions to Zoology.

The species sits in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes — the New World live-bearing toothcarps. Within Poecilia it belongs to the Poecilia latipinna complex, the sailfin mollies, a closely related cluster of species that share the enlarged dorsal fin of breeding males and a preference for brackish coastal habitats. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and treats Poecilia kykesis Poeser, 2002 as valid.

The etymology is itself the story of the name: Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "many-coloured," the standard reference to the variegated patterning of these fishes, while kykesis comes from the Greek for "a mixing" or "a stirring-together" — Poeser's deliberate nod to the mixture of homonyms that the double recognition of Poecilia petenensis and Mollienesia petenensis had produced.

Morphology

Poecilia kykesis is a moderately large molly. Males reach about 5 in in standard length and females about 4 in, with the compressed, fairly deep body typical of the sailfin group. The fin counts run to a dorsal fin of roughly 12 to 16 rays and an anal fin of 9 rays; there are about 28 to 29 scales along the lateral series and around 20 scales around the caudal peduncle.

The species lacks strong, distinctive body pigmentation, but its scales carry black margins, and in adult males these dark edges can coalesce into spots that extend the rows of markings onto the caudal fin. The caudal fin has a slightly produced lower margin. As in other members of the latipinna complex, mature males develop the enlarged dorsal fin that gives the sailfin mollies their name, used in display, though the degree of fin development and pigment varies between individuals and populations.

In overall form Poecilia kykesis is a recognisable sailfin molly rather than a brightly distinctive species — its diagnosis rests more on meristics, geography and the careful taxonomic work of its description than on any single eye-catching colour feature. Detailed colour-in-life notes for the species are data sparse, and much of what is published concerns preserved type material.

Habitat

Poecilia kykesis occurs in North-Central America, from a tributary of the Río Usumacinta and nearby lakes in the Petén of Guatemala northward across the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. It is a fish of warm tropical lowlands, living in fresh and brackish water and occupying the benthopelagic zone of shallow coastal systems.

Like other sailfin mollies, it favours shallow brackish-to-freshwater coastal areas: tidal lagoons, lakes, creeks and standing pools. It is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, ranging across clear to muddy and turbid water and over substrates of mud, sand or clay, and it is often associated with submerged or emergent aquatic vegetation, which provides both food and cover.

This ecological breadth — a comfort with variable salinity, turbidity and bottom type — is characteristic of the latipinna complex and helps explain why these mollies are abundant across their coastal ranges. For Poecilia kykesis specifically the published habitat record is general rather than finely resolved, but it consistently places the species in the shallow, vegetated, brackish-influenced margins of the Usumacinta lowlands and the Yucatán.

Feeding

Poecilia kykesis is a low-trophic-level omnivore, with a trophic level around 2.3 that reflects a diet leaning heavily toward plant and detrital material — the typical feeding ecology of mollies. In the wild this means grazing on algae and aufwuchs (the film of algae, diatoms and micro-organisms coating submerged surfaces), along with detritus and small invertebrates taken incidentally among the vegetation.

The abundant submerged and emergent plants of its brackish-coastal habitat supply much of this diet, and the species' association with vegetated shallows is as much about feeding as about cover. Mollies are persistent, near-continuous grazers, working over plant surfaces and the substrate throughout the day.

Species-specific dietary studies for Poecilia kykesis are not available, so the picture here is drawn from its trophic level and from the well-documented feeding habits of the sailfin molly group; in captivity such fish thrive on a vegetable-leaning omnivore diet with a substantial algal or plant component.

Mating

As a poeciliid, Poecilia kykesis reproduces by internal fertilisation. Males carry a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which is used to transfer sperm to the female. This is the defining reproductive structure of the live-bearing toothcarps, and it allows fertilisation to occur internally rather than over a spawning site.

In the sailfin mollies the enlarged male dorsal fin plays a part in courtship display, with males presenting the raised "sail" to females. As in related mollies, females are able to store viable sperm internally after mating, so a single insemination can fertilise more than one successive brood — a feature that lets these fishes maintain steady reproduction across a season.

Detailed mating behaviour, display sequences and any role of male size or fin development in female choice have not been documented specifically for Poecilia kykesis; the account here is inferred from the broader Poecilia latipinna complex, of which this species is a member.

Breeding

Poecilia kykesis is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This live-bearing strategy, shared across the Poeciliidae, produces fully formed fry that can swim and feed from birth.

The species shows medium resilience, with an estimated population doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years — consistent with a fish that breeds steadily but is not as explosively prolific as the smallest livebearers. Specific figures for brood size, gestation length and the frequency of broods are not populated in the standard data sources for Poecilia kykesis, so precise reproductive numbers for this species are data sparse; the general expectation, from related sailfin mollies, is of recurring broods of live young supported by stored sperm.

Female sperm storage and successive broods, female-skewed reproductive investment, and the absence of parental care after birth are all typical of the group and can reasonably be expected here, but should be read as complex-level rather than kykesis-specific where exact figures are concerned.

In the aquarium

Poecilia kykesis is not a fixture of the ornamental trade in the way the fancy mollies and guppies are, and dedicated, species-specific care literature for it is essentially absent. What guidance exists is best inferred from the requirements of the wider sailfin-molly complex, to which it belongs, and applied conservatively.

On that basis the species suits hard, slightly alkaline to genuinely brackish water at warm tropical temperatures — the conditions of its native lagoons and coastal creeks — with generous open swimming space and a good amount of plant matter or algal grazing. As a vegetable-leaning omnivore it benefits from a diet rich in algae and plant-based foods rather than a heavily protein-based one, and like other mollies it tends to do best when its water is hard and stable rather than soft and acidic.

Because it is a livebearer, mixed-sex groups will reproduce readily, and males may pursue females persistently, so a female-skewed ratio and adequate cover help spread out attention. These are general sailfin-molly husbandry principles; firm, kykesis-specific aquarium experience is sparse, and any keeper should treat the figures as derived from the complex rather than measured for this species.

Conservation

Poecilia kykesis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 22 March 2018. The species is widespread across the lowland waters of the Usumacinta basin and the Yucatán Peninsula, occupies a broad range of brackish and freshwater coastal habitats, and tolerates variable conditions of salinity, turbidity and substrate — all factors that support a stable, low-concern status.

The fish is harmless to humans and is not listed under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species. As with much of the regional ichthyofauna, the broad threats to lowland Central American freshwaters — habitat alteration, pollution and changes to coastal wetlands — apply in a general sense, but no significant species-level threat to Poecilia kykesis has been identified, and its adaptability across the coastal margin gives it considerable resilience.

For the aquarist the relevant point is restraint with any captive stock: brackish-tolerant, fecund livebearers of this kind should never be released into local waters outside their native range, where adaptable mollies can establish themselves and disrupt resident communities.
