Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia mexicana was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1863, from Mexican material — the basis of the epithet mexicana. It belongs to the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, and sits in the subfamily Poeciliinae among the mollies. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, treats Poecilia mexicana Steindachner, 1863 as valid; FishBase carries the species under SpecCode 3227.
The shortfin molly is frequently and easily confused with Poecilia sphenops, another small-finned Mesoamerican molly, and the two names have been muddled in both the older literature and the aquarium trade for well over a century. Much of what passes through shops simply as "black molly" or "shortfin molly" derives from this species complex, and clean identification often requires locality data. The genus Poecilia is large and has been repeatedly revised; the shortfin molly is nonetheless a well-circumscribed, widely studied species, and its name is stable.
Within P. mexicana, biologists recognise a set of locally specialised populations of unusual interest — notably the cave-dwelling forms of the Cueva del Azufre system in southern Mexico, which live in permanently dark, hydrogen-sulphide-rich water. These are not separate species but extreme ecotypes, and their persistence within a single nominal species is a large part of why the shortfin molly is so heavily used in research on rapid adaptation.
Morphology
The shortfin molly is a small, stout livebearer. The largest recorded individuals reach about 4.5 in in standard length, but most fish encountered are far smaller — a common length is only around 1.5 in — and the species presents the deep-bodied, blunt-headed build typical of the mollies. As its English name indicates, the dorsal and other fins are short, distinguishing it from the showy sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna and Poecilia velifera) in which males develop a tall dorsal sail.
Colouration in wild fish is muted and silvery to olive-grey, often with rows of small spots forming faint lines along the flanks and a scatter of iridescence; populations vary, and some wild and aquarium-bred fish carry darker, melanistic pigment, the basis of the familiar black molly of the trade. Sexual dimorphism follows the poeciliid pattern: males are smaller and slimmer than females and bear a gonopodium, while females are larger, deeper-bodied, and develop a dark gravid patch toward the rear of the abdomen when carrying young.
The defining male structure is the gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally — the hallmark of the live-bearing poeciliids. In the cave populations, morphology shifts further: fish from sulphidic, lightless waters show changes in body shape, head and eye proportions, and pigmentation relative to their surface relatives, a textbook illustration of how a single species can diverge under extreme local conditions.
Habitat
Poecilia mexicana is a fish of warm, often hard waters across North and Central America, ranging from the Río San Juan drainage of north-eastern Mexico south through the Atlantic slope to Guatemala. It is benthopelagic and lives in a wide spread of small-water and lowland habitats: warm springs and their effluents, canals, irrigation ditches, weedy backwaters, and the quieter pools of streams. It occupies fresh and brackish water alike, and FishBase characterises its preferred chemistry as hard and roughly neutral — around pH 7.0 to 7.5, with high hardness (dH on the order of 20 to 30) — at tropical temperatures of about 72–82 °F.
This broad tolerance underlies the species' success. Like other adaptable mollies, the shortfin molly thrives in degraded, disturbed, and chemically marginal waters, and its live-bearing reproduction lets small founder populations establish quickly. The species has been introduced beyond its native range, and at least one country reports adverse ecological impacts from it, making P. mexicana a potential pest where it escapes captivity.
Most striking are the cave populations, best known from the Cueva del Azufre in Tabasco, Mexico, where shortfin mollies persist in permanently dark water charged with toxic hydrogen sulphide. Survival there demands tolerance of hypoxia and chronic chemical stress, and the cave fish have become a celebrated natural laboratory for studying how vertebrates colonise and adapt to extreme, sunless, sulphidic environments — the kind of habitat that excludes nearly all other fishes.
Feeding
In the wild the shortfin molly feeds low on the food web: its diet is dominated by detritus, with a low trophic level around 2.0, supplemented by algae, biofilm, diatoms, and small invertebrates grazed and gleaned from surfaces and the water column. It is, in practice, an opportunistic omnivore that leans heavily on plant and detrital matter — the typical molly pattern of constant, low-intensity grazing rather than active predation.
In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods, but it does best with a diet rich in vegetable and algal matter. Good-quality flake or pellets with a substantial plant component, supplemented by blanched vegetables, algae and spirulina-based foods, and occasional small live or frozen items such as Daphnia or brine shrimp, keep the fish in colour and condition. As with other grazing livebearers, several small feedings suit them better than one large meal, and a healthy growth of soft algae in a well-lit tank is a feature rather than a problem for these fish to browse on.
Mating
Reproduction in the shortfin molly is internal and continuous, following the standard poeciliid pattern. Males do not build nests or hold territories; instead they pursue females persistently, transferring sperm by means of the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ. As in related livebearers, females are able to store viable sperm internally, so a single mating can fuel a succession of broods over the following months without the male being present.
Male mating behaviour combines courtship display with attempts at sneaky, coercive copulation, and male reproductive tactics in this genus are shaped by both female preference and male–male competition. Sexual maturity is reached relatively late for such a small fish — roughly 7 to 12 months of age — after which both sexes can breed more or less year-round under warm conditions. The shortfin molly's mating system, like its ecology, has been a productive subject of study, including work comparing surface and cave populations whose differing light regimes alter how visual courtship signals function.
Breeding
Poecilia mexicana is viviparous: the female retains the fertilised eggs internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. According to FishBase, the female delivers her brood roughly 28 days after fertilisation, producing on the order of 30 to 80 young per brood — a substantial output that, combined with stored sperm and frequent breeding, lets populations grow quickly. The species' resilience is rated medium, with a population doubling time of about 1.4 to 4.4 years.
The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately. As with most poeciliids, there is no parental care, and adults — including the mother — will readily eat fry, so breeders rely on dense planting, floating cover, or separating the young to raise good numbers. The fry grow steadily on finely powdered foods, newly hatched brine shrimp, and the algae and biofilm they graze, but they reach sexual maturity comparatively slowly for a livebearer, typically over several months to a year.
Unlike the guppy and some other poeciliids, the shortfin molly is not noted for pronounced superfetation (carrying multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously); its broods are produced in discrete cycles. The combination of hardy adults, large broods, live birth, and tolerance of marginal water makes the species straightforward to breed in captivity, provided the water is kept warm, clean, and on the harder, more alkaline side.
In the aquarium
The shortfin molly is a hardy, adaptable community livebearer, well suited to keepers who can provide the hard, alkaline water it prefers. It is an active, sociable fish best kept in groups, and as with other mollies, a ratio skewed toward females reduces the constant harassment that males otherwise direct at any single female. The species' real husbandry demands are water chemistry and space: mollies do poorly in soft, acidic water and appreciate good filtration, stable warmth, and clean conditions, and the larger adults benefit from more swimming room than their small common size suggests.
Water should reflect the species' natural preference for hard, roughly neutral to slightly alkaline conditions and tropical temperatures around 72–82 °F. The shortfin molly's noted tolerance of brackish water means a little added salt is often beneficial and well within its range, though it is not strictly required for the species to thrive. Peaceful by temperament, mollies make good community fish with other robust, similarly minded species, but they fare badly with very soft-water specialists whose conditions are incompatible.
Two practical cautions apply. First, prolific breeding makes population control the standing management task — a mixed-sex group will produce a steady stream of fry. Second, the trade history of the P. mexicana / P. sphenops complex means "shortfin" and "black" mollies are often of uncertain or hybrid origin, so locality-documented stock is worth seeking where true P. mexicana is wanted.
Conservation
Poecilia mexicana is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is a widespread and abundant Mesoamerican molly, tolerant of a broad range of habitats and chemically marginal, degraded waters, and it faces no significant threat at the species level — a marked contrast with many of the imperilled Goodeidae of the same region.
As with other adaptable mollies, the conservation concern runs in the opposite direction from the usual one. The species' hardiness, brackish tolerance, and live-bearing fecundity make it an easy colonist outside its native range, and it has been introduced elsewhere, with at least one country reporting adverse ecological impacts. The responsible position for an aquarist is therefore straightforward: enjoy the fish, but never release unwanted shortfin mollies into local waters, where this superbly tolerant livebearer can establish itself with ease.
