Poecilia minor is, true to its name, one of the smallest of the New World mollies — a diminutive Amazonian livebearer in which even adults reach barely 0.5 in. Described by Samuel Garman in 1895 and known from the Amazon basin of Brazil, it is a wild fish almost entirely absent from the aquarium trade: there is no body of hobby-care literature for it, and the most substantial reference remains Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers of the World. What can be said about it comes mostly from museum collections and the general biology of its family, the internally fertilising, live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia minor was described by the American naturalist Samuel Garman in 1895, and the species is conventionally cited with the authority in parentheses — (Garman, 1895) — reflecting that the original generic placement differed from the current combination in Poecilia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid fish names, governs the accepted spelling and combination; FishBase lists the species under SpecCode 47225 and places it in Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae.

The genus Poecilia unites the guppies and mollies and a number of allied livebearers of the Americas. Within that genus, P. minor sits among the mollies, and its specific epithet — Latin minor, "smaller" — marks it out as one of the most diminutive members of the group. The genus has been repeatedly revised and carries a long history of synonymy across its many species; for P. minor specifically the taxonomic record is comparatively thin, a reflection of how rarely the fish has been collected or studied relative to its famous congeners the guppy and the common molly.

Morphology

Poecilia minor is a very small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 0.5 in SL, which makes it one of the smallest of all mollies and places it among the tinier poeciliids overall. Beyond overall size, detailed morphological description in the accessible literature is sparse: there is no FishBase photograph of a live fish, only a line drawing, and the species is documented chiefly from preserved museum material rather than from the living, coloured animal.

As a member of Poeciliidae, P. minor would be expected to show the family's characteristic sexual dimorphism, with males bearing the gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — and females being the larger, deeper-bodied sex. Species-specific figures for male versus female size, colour pattern and finnage are not reliably documented for P. minor, however, so beyond the small overall length the morphology is best treated as data sparse rather than described in detail it cannot support.

Habitat

Poecilia minor is a South American freshwater fish recorded from the Amazon River basin in Brazil. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic and tropical, occupying warm lowland fresh waters; the recorded temperature range associated with the species is roughly 73–82 °F, consistent with the warm, lowland Amazonian setting from which it is known.

Finer detail about its preferred microhabitats — the particular streams, floodplain pools, or marginal waters it favours, and its pH and hardness preferences — is not documented in the accessible references. Like other small poeciliids it is presumably a fish of quiet, shallow, vegetated or marginal waters rather than open river channels, but in the absence of habitat-specific field data this is inference from the family rather than a recorded fact for P. minor itself.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Poecilia minor appears in the accessible literature. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.0, which is consistent with the omnivorous-to-micro-predatory feeding typical of small poeciliids — a mix of algae, detritus, small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the water column and substrate.

Given its very small size, P. minor would necessarily feed on correspondingly tiny food items, grazing on microalgae and biofilm and taking small invertebrates and zooplankton. Because the fish is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, there is no captive-feeding literature to draw on either; any account of its diet is therefore generalised from the family rather than measured for the species, and the specifics are best regarded as data sparse.

Mating

Reproduction in Poecilia minor is internal, as in all poeciliids. Fertilisation occurs inside the female after the male transfers sperm using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin that is the defining reproductive feature of the New World livebearers. As is general for the family, females are likely able to store viable sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single mating, though this has not been documented specifically for P. minor.

The details of courtship in this species — whether males rely on display, on sneak copulation attempts, or some mix as seen in related mollies and guppies — are not recorded. Superfetation, the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, is characteristic of some poeciliids (notably Heterandria and Poeciliopsis) but is not a feature of Poecilia; it should not be assumed for P. minor. Beyond the basic fact of internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, the mating biology of this species is effectively undocumented.

Breeding

Poecilia minor is viviparous, like the rest of its family: the female carries developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. As a member of Poecilia, it is lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk rather than by a true placental connection, in contrast to the matrotrophic, placenta-bearing genera such as Heterandria and Poeciliopsis. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, which is consistent with the rapid, fecund reproduction expected of a small livebearer.

Species-specific reproductive figures, however, are not on record. Gestation length, brood size, the size of the fry at birth and the age at maturity for P. minor are not documented in the accessible literature; FishBase notes no recorded length at maturity. Any precise gestation or brood-size numbers attached to this species would be fabrication, so the reproductive account stops at what the family and the genus reliably imply: internal fertilisation, yolk-nourished embryos, live birth of fully formed fry, and no superfetation.

In the aquarium

Poecilia minor is essentially not an aquarium fish. No dedicated hobby or specialist-livebearer species profile for it could be located, and the species has effectively no presence in the aquarium trade; it is a small, rarely collected wild Amazonian molly studied from museum material rather than kept by aquarists. As a result there is no established body of husbandry guidance — no documented tank size, water-chemistry targets, or community-compatibility notes derived from keeping the fish.

Were it ever maintained, the general requirements of a small, warm-water Amazonian poeciliid would presumably apply: stable warm water in the low-to-high 20s Celsius, gentle filtration, dense planting and tiny foods suited to a fish under 1 in. But these are inferences from the family and the recorded temperature range, not care instructions validated for P. minor, and they should be read as such.

Conservation

Poecilia minor is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (species ID 140617416). The fish carries a low fishing-vulnerability score and is rated harmless to humans; as a widespread Amazonian species with high reproductive resilience, it faces no significant species-level threat in the assessment.

There is no indication that P. minor is targeted by any fishery or trade, and its obscurity in the aquarium hobby means it is not subject to collection pressure for ornamental purposes. As with other small Amazonian fishes, the broad-scale risks it shares with its community are habitat-level ones — deforestation, water-quality change and hydrological alteration across the basin — rather than anything specific to the species, which the IUCN does not flag as being of conservation concern.
