Poecilia scalpridens is a tiny, little-known livebearer of the Brazilian Amazon, far removed from the gaudy aquarium guppies that share its genus. Described from material collected along the lower Amazon in the nineteenth century, it lives in the sluggish floodplain lakes and shaded forest-stream margins of the central Amazon basin, where the males barely exceed two centimetres. It belongs to the subgenus Pamphorichthys, a group of small, plainly coloured South American poeciliids, and is almost never seen in the hobby — a wild fish documented far more often by field surveys than by aquarists.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia scalpridens was described by the American zoologist Samuel Garman in 1895, from specimens taken in the lower Amazon basin of Brazil. The species is treated within the genus Poecilia, the large New World genus of livebearing toothcarps that also contains the guppies and mollies, and is placed in the subgenus Pamphorichthys — a cluster of small, modestly coloured South American poeciliids that some authors have elevated to genus rank. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the combination is conventionally written with Garman's authority in parentheses, reflecting the genus reassignment since the original description.

The family Poeciliidae unites the guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, mosquitofishes and their relatives — small, internally fertilising, mostly live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas, in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Within that family Poecilia scalpridens is one of the lesser-studied members: it carries the English common name "Chisel toothcarp," but it has no body of aquarium literature behind it and is known chiefly from museum material and regional ichthyological surveys. Much of what can be said about it rests on a handful of collections rather than on sustained study, so several aspects of its biology remain data sparse.

Morphology

Poecilia scalpridens is among the smallest of the poeciliids. Males reach only about 1 in in total length, while females are roughly twice as large, attaining around 1.5 in — a pronounced sexual size dimorphism typical of the family, in which the female is the larger, deeper-bodied sex and the male the smaller. The fish is plainly coloured by the standards of its showier relatives, lacking the scattered iridescent spotting that makes wild guppies so distinctive; this subdued patterning is characteristic of the Pamphorichthys group to which it belongs.

As in all poeciliids, the defining male structure is the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally. Beyond these general features, fine morphological detail for Poecilia scalpridens is sparse in the accessible literature; the most useful diagnostic descriptions come from regional faunistic work, including a 2021 range-extension paper that set out characters for field identification of the species in the Brazilian Amazon.

Habitat

Poecilia scalpridens is endemic to the Amazon basin of Brazil. Its documented range centres on the lower and central Amazon — lakes and igarapés (forest streams) in the lower reaches of tributaries near the main channel of the Amazon River, broadly between Parintins and the mouth of the Rio Tapajós, with historical records from Santarém, Óbidos, the Rio Tapajós, the Rio Trombetas, Pará, Vila Bela and Mato Grosso. A 2021 study extended the known range some 186 mi northward to the Jari river drainage in Amapá, underscoring how patchily the species has been sampled across a vast and under-surveyed region.

The fish favours lentic and sluggish water: floodplain lakes and the shaded, slow margins of forest streams, rather than fast or open river channels. It is a freshwater, pelagic, tropical species, recorded across a temperature range of roughly 73–82 °F. Beyond those broad parameters, precise habitat chemistry — pH, hardness, seasonal water-level effects — is not well documented for this species, and is best treated as inferred from the warm, soft, tannin-stained blackwater and floodplain conditions typical of its central-Amazon range.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study is available for Poecilia scalpridens, and its feeding ecology is best described as data sparse. As a small poeciliid of floodplain lakes and forest-stream margins, it is almost certainly an opportunistic omnivore and micro-feeder, taking algae, detritus, diatoms, micro-invertebrates and small insect larvae from the water column and surface — the generalist habit shared across the family. A FishBase trophic-level estimate of around 2.6 is consistent with a diet drawn from both plant and small animal matter rather than from active predation.

In the absence of aquarium observation, captive feeding can only be inferred from related small livebearers, which thrive on fine flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp, plus a share of algal matter. Because this species is essentially absent from the hobby, no established feeding regime exists; any keeper would be working from first principles.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Poecilia scalpridens reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium — the modified anal fin that is the defining reproductive structure of the family — rather than by external spawning. In the small livebearers generally, males pursue females and alternate between display and direct insemination attempts, and females are typically able to store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing successive broods from a single mating; the same is presumed for this species, though it has not been documented directly.

Specific courtship behaviour, mate-choice dynamics and any colour or display signalling in Poecilia scalpridens are unrecorded in the accessible literature. The pronounced size difference between the small male and the much larger female is the most visible reproductive feature, and is the general pattern in livebearing toothcarps; the finer behavioural detail remains data sparse for this particular species.

Breeding

Poecilia scalpridens is viviparous — a true livebearer. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs, the reproductive mode shared across the Poeciliidae. FishBase rates the species as having high resilience, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction characteristic of small livebearers.

Beyond the basic mode, the specifics are not documented for this species: gestation length, brood size and any tendency toward superfetation (the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, known in some Poecilia) have not been recorded for Poecilia scalpridens, and FishBase's reproduction fields for it are unpopulated. By analogy with other small poeciliids the broods are likely modest in number and the fry born fully formed and immediately able to swim and feed, but these are reasonable inferences rather than measured facts and should be treated as such.

In the aquarium

Poecilia scalpridens is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby. It is not bred commercially, rarely if ever appears in the trade, and has no established body of husbandry guidance — anyone keeping it would almost certainly be working from wild-caught fish obtained through specialist or scientific channels rather than from a shop.

What little can be offered is inference from the species' natural conditions and from its small livebearer relatives: warm water in the 73–82 °F range matching its tropical Amazon habitat, gentle filtration suited to a fish of sluggish floodplain lakes and stream margins, dense planting for cover, and a small-particle omnivorous diet. As a tiny, peaceful species it would belong only with similarly small and unaggressive tankmates, if kept in a community at all. Given the lack of documented experience, this section is necessarily speculative, and the species is best regarded as one for dedicated specialists rather than general aquarists.

Conservation

Poecilia scalpridens is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 7 November 2018. The species is not listed on CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species, and is harmless to humans. Its Least Concern status reflects a wide distribution across the central and lower Amazon basin and the absence of any identified species-level threat, together with the high reproductive resilience typical of small livebearers.

That said, the species remains poorly known, and its conservation picture rests on relatively sparse sampling across an enormous, dynamic floodplain system. Continued documentation — such as the 2021 record extending its range to the Jari drainage — gradually refines understanding of where it lives. As with other Amazonian floodplain fishes, the broad regional pressures of deforestation and habitat alteration bear watching, but at present nothing indicates that Poecilia scalpridens itself is at risk.
