Xiphophorus mixei is a small, short-sworded swordtail known only from a cluster of headwater streams in the eastern highlands of Oaxaca, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of southern Mexico. Described in 2004 alongside its close relative X. monticolus, it belongs to the X. clemenciae clade — the southern, short-sword group of swordtails — and is named for the Mixe people, the indigenous community of the highland villages near where the fish was collected. Like all swordtails it is a live-bearing toothcarp, but it remains one of the more obscure members of the genus, with a narrow range and little presence in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Xiphophorus mixei was formally described in 2004 by Klaus Kallman, Rupert Walter, Donald Morizot and Steven Kazianis in the American Museum Novitates (number 3441), in a paper titled "Two New Species of Xiphophorus (Poeciliidae) from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, with a Discussion of the Distribution of the X. clemenciae Clade." The same paper described a second new swordtail, X. monticolus, from the same general region. Both taxa were placed within the X. clemenciae clade, the group of short-sword southern swordtails of which Xiphophorus clemenciae is the namesake. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Xiphophorus mixei Kallman, Walter, Morizot & Kazianis, 2004 as the valid name, in the genus Xiphophorus within the family Poeciliidae.

The genus name Xiphophorus combines the Greek xiphos, "sword," with pherein, "to carry" — a reference to the elongated lower lobe of the caudal fin that gives male swordtails their characteristic "sword." The specific epithet mixei honours the Mixe, an indigenous people of the eastern highlands of Oaxaca who live in villages in the headwaters of the Río del Sol and Río Jaltepec, the area from which the type material was drawn. The species is recorded in FishBase under species code 62095, with the 2004 original description as its main reference.

The placement of X. mixei within the clemenciae clade is itself part of the story of the original description, which used the new species to discuss how the short-sword swordtails are distributed across the drainages of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The clemenciae clade is biogeographically interesting because it sits at the southern, Atlantic-slope edge of the swordtail radiation, and the discovery of two new clade members from adjacent Coatzacoalcos-tributary headwaters added resolution to that picture.

Morphology

Xiphophorus mixei is a small swordtail. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1.5 in SL for males (or unsexed specimens), consistent with a small to medium-sized member of the genus. The body is fusiform — the normal swordtail body plan — and the fish is described as a short-sword species: the sword (the elongated ventral extension of the caudal fin in males) is very short, with a reported sword index of only about 0.06, far less than the long, conspicuous swords of the more familiar green swordtail. This short sword is a defining feature of the X. clemenciae clade to which mixei belongs.

The colour pattern, as described in the literature, includes one or two orange lateral stripes running along the flanks and black spots at the base of the caudal fin. These are modest markings rather than the bold patterning of some aquarium-strain swordtails, in keeping with the fish's status as a little-modified wild species. As in all poeciliids, the males bear a gonopodium — a rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — which together with the (short) sword distinguishes mature males from the plainer, deeper-bodied females.

Beyond these points the published morphological detail available here is sparse. The fish is a typical small headwater swordtail in overall build, and precise counts and proportions from the original description are not reproduced in the cached sources, so finer diagnostic characters are best taken from Kallman and colleagues' 2004 account directly.

Habitat

Xiphophorus mixei is endemic to a small area of the eastern highlands of Oaxaca, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of southern Mexico. According to FishBase distribution data, it inhabits the headwaters of the Río del Sol and the Río Sarabia system, and tributaries to the Río Aguacatengco within the Río Jaltepec drainage, west of Platanillo, Oaxaca. The Río Jaltepec is a major tributary of the Río Coatzacoalcos, so the species belongs to the Atlantic-slope drainages of the isthmus rather than the Pacific side.

The fish is a headwater-stream specialist of this upland region, occupying clear, flowing tropical fresh water. FishBase characterises the species as freshwater, pelagic and tropical, occurring in the warm waters typical of lowland-to-upland Mexican streams. Its restriction to headwater tributaries of a single drainage system gives it a naturally limited distribution.

The biogeography of these headwaters is part of what made the species scientifically interesting: the 2004 description used X. mixei and X. monticolus to discuss how the short-sword clemenciae clade is partitioned among the streams draining the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Precise habitat measurements — water temperature, pH and hardness at the collection sites — are not given in the cached sources, so the species' detailed environmental envelope is data-sparse and would need to be drawn from primary field accounts.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Xiphophorus mixei appears in the cached sources, so its feeding ecology is inferred from the genus and from its small-stream habitat rather than from direct observation. The balance between plant and animal matter in such species typically shifts with what is locally and seasonally abundant.

Given the absence of published captive husbandry notes for this particular species, any feeding recommendation would be a generic swordtail regime — a varied omnivorous diet of small prepared and live or frozen foods supplemented with algal matter. The cached record does not document the species in the aquarium trade, so this remains an inference from close relatives rather than established practice for mixei itself.

Mating

Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Xiphophorus mixei reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin; there is no external spawning and no egg-laying. This is the reproductive hallmark of the New World livebearers and is shared across the swordtails, platies, guppies and mollies.

In swordtails generally, the male's caudal "sword" plays a role in courtship and female assessment, and the length and ornamentation of the sword has been a focus of sexual-selection research across the genus. Xiphophorus mixei is a short-sword species, with a sword index of only about 0.06, placing it among the southern clemenciae-clade swordtails in which the sword is reduced rather than elongated; the orange lateral stripes and caudal-base markings may serve as additional visual signals. No mating-behaviour study specific to mixei is present in the cached sources, however, so the details of its courtship are not documented here.

As in other poeciliids, females are generally able to store sperm internally, which in many species allows successive broods to be produced from a single insemination. Xiphophorus mixei is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The newborn fry of poeciliids are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed independently from birth.

FishBase reports no species-specific brood data for X. mixei — no documented gestation period, brood size or breeding season — so these figures are genuinely data-sparse for this fish. By comparison with other small Xiphophorus, a gestation of roughly three to four weeks and broods ranging from a handful to a few dozen fry would be typical, but those values are not confirmed for mixei in the cached record and should not be presented as measured. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — occurs in some poeciliids but is not the usual condition in Xiphophorus, and there is no evidence in the sources that it occurs in this species.

FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated minimum population-doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction expected of a small livebearer. In the aquarium

Xiphophorus mixei is not a fish of the general aquarium trade. The cached sources document it as a scientifically described wild species with a narrow range in the Oaxacan highlands, and contain no husbandry guidance, captive-breeding accounts or commercial availability for it. Any keeping it occurs would be within specialist livebearer circles working with wild Xiphophorus rather than in the mainstream hobby.

Where wild short-sword swordtails of the clemenciae group are maintained by specialists, they are kept much as other small stream swordtails: in clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing fresh water at tropical temperatures, in groups with a female-skewed sex ratio to spread out male courtship. Because mixei comes from clear upland headwater streams, good water quality and gentle current would be sensible defaults — but these are inferences from habitat and from close relatives, not documented requirements for this species.

Given the lack of an established care record, the most useful thing an aquarist can take from the available data is that X. mixei is a localised wild endemic whose chief interest is scientific and conservational rather than ornamental. Anyone working with the species would be doing so as a maintainer of a restricted-range wild fish, and accurate locality records and careful, non-hybridising line maintenance would matter more than display value.

Conservation

Xiphophorus mixei has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List. A direct search of the Red List located no published assessment for the species, and FishBase (Version 2025-2, Global) reports its status as Not Evaluated; its CITES status is likewise Not Evaluated. This means there is no formal, peer-reviewed conservation ranking for the fish, even though some of its congeners — such as Xiphophorus gordoni — have been assessed.

The absence of an assessment should not be read as evidence of security. X. mixei is a narrow-range endemic confined to the headwaters of a single drainage system in the Oaxacan highlands, and small-range headwater fishes are inherently vulnerable to localised threats such as habitat alteration, deforestation in their catchments, water abstraction and the introduction of non-native fishes. FishBase notes a low fishing vulnerability and classes the species as harmless and of high biological resilience, but resilience to fishing pressure is a different matter from resilience to habitat loss across a tiny range.

Until a formal evaluation exists, the responsible framing is that this is a restricted-range Mexican endemic of unknown but potentially precarious conservation status, deserving of monitoring of its headwater habitats.
