Taxonomy & naming
Beaufortia fasciolata was described by the Vietnamese ichthyologist Nguyen in 2005 and placed in the genus Beaufortia, a group of small hillstream loaches within the family Balitoridae (sometimes placed in the broader Gastromyzontidae depending on the classification followed). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for valid names; the combination Beaufortia fasciolata is current and no synonym has displaced it.
Beaufortia is a genus of rheophilic balitorids distributed across southern China and northern Vietnam, overlapping broadly with the Annamite mountain system. It belongs to the Balitoridae subfamily that includes the gastromyzonins — the Asian hillstream loaches whose body plan has converged on a flattened, sucker-like form independently across multiple lineages in Indochina and Sundaland. The epithet fasciolata derives from the Latin fascia (band or stripe), referring to the banded colour pattern that distinguishes this species within the genus.
Morphology
Like all members of the genus Beaufortia, this species is strikingly depressed — the body is flattened from top to bottom rather than side to side, with large, horizontally splayed pectoral and pelvic fins that together form an adhesive surface allowing the fish to grip smooth rock in fast current. The head is broad and flat, the mouth inferior and adapted for rasping biofilm. Adults reach approximately 2–3 in standard length, making this a small to medium hillstream loach for its group.
The colour pattern is the species' defining character: a series of dark transverse bands or bars cross the body and fins over a paler ground colour, producing the banded (fasciolate) pattern named in the species epithet. The skin is effectively scaleless in the balitorid manner — the tiny, deeply embedded scales provide little protection and leave the fish physiologically exposed, a point with direct relevance to medication sensitivity. There is no erectile suborbital spine in the balitorid hillstream loaches (that feature characterises the botiids), but the pectoral-fin rays are stiff and can snag a fine-mesh net.
Habitat
Beaufortia fasciolata is endemic to the hill and montane streams of Vietnam's Annamite ranges — the north-to-south mountain chain that forms the spine of central Vietnam and the Vietnam–Laos border. These streams are fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated, and typically cool relative to lowland tropical rivers; the Annamites intercept monsoon moisture and funnel it through rocky gorges where dissolved oxygen is near saturation and water temperatures run distinctly lower than the seasonal air temperature might suggest.
The habitat is bare or sparsely vegetated rock, where current prevents the accumulation of sediment and maintains the algae, diatom and biofilm communities that this fish depends on for food. Water chemistry is typically soft to moderately hard and near-neutral, reflecting the metamorphic and granite geology of the range. This is not a lowland tropical species and not a fish of still or slow water; it occupies the same ecological niche as the Sewellia of the same mountain system and demands the same torrent conditions.
Feeding
Beaufortia fasciolata is an aufwuchs grazer — it uses its inferior, fleshy-lipped mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, bacterial mats and fine biofilm from rock surfaces in fast, clear water. This is a specialist diet that ordinary flake, pellet or freeze-dried foods cannot fully replace; a fish placed in a bare or newly set-up tank without a mature algal crust on rocks and glass will slowly starve even when offered supplementary food. Starvation in a bare tank is the single most common cause of death in hillstream loaches kept by otherwise competent aquarists.
In a mature aquarium with algae-encrusted rocks, Beaufortia fasciolata will graze continuously throughout the day. Supplementary feeding with sinking algae wafers, blanched courgette or cucumber, and small frozen foods such as cyclops, daphnia or baby brine shrimp rounds out the diet and sustains condition. Commercial Spirulina-based wafers that soften on the rockscape are a practical staple. The fish should be visibly full-bodied across the mid-section; a pinched belly after weeks in the tank indicates inadequate biofilm or competition for feeding sites.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Beaufortia fasciolata is modest at best. Females may be somewhat deeper-bodied when gravid, and differences in the pectoral-fin extent have been noted in related Beaufortia species, but distinguishing the sexes by external examination alone is difficult in most individuals. A group of six or more allows natural pair formation without the keeper needing to reliably sex fish individually.
Mating behaviour in the genus, as in Sewellia and other rheophilic balitorids, is believed to involve the male guiding or pressing against the female over a prepared substrate — small stones or gravel swept clean of silt in a fast-flowing area of the tank. Conditioning females with varied high-quality food and maintaining the cool temperatures and strong flow the species requires appear to be the relevant triggers, but published observations specific to Beaufortia fasciolata in captivity are absent from the available record.
Breeding
Beaufortia fasciolata has not been verified as bred in home aquaria in any documented account accessible to this atlas. Like most hillstream loaches it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: ripe fish would be expected to deposit eggs among clean stones and gravel in fast-flowing water, with the current aerating them through development, and the adults taking no further role. This is the standard mode for the balitorid rheophiles, of which a handful of species — most notably Sewellia lineolata from the same Annamite region — have spawned in sufficiently mature, strongly-flowing river tanks set up by dedicated hobbyists.
The practical picture for this species is honest uncertainty: it may spawn under the right conditions — a heavily matured high-flow biotope with clean substrate and cool, oxygen-rich water — but any such event would be rare and undocumented at this writing. The trade supply of Beaufortia fasciolata, where it exists at all, is drawn from wild-collected fish, not from aquarium propagation. Keepers should buy the species expecting to enjoy and maintain it rather than to breed it.
In the aquarium
Beaufortia fasciolata is an advanced-keeper fish, not because it is aggressive or difficult to feed once established, but because its environmental requirements are uncompromising and cannot be approximated with a community tank setup. The aquarium must replicate a torrent: a powerful circulation pump or powerhead directing a strong surface-breaking current across a dense rockscape (flat slate tiles, river cobbles and smooth pebbles work well) is the foundation. Weak flow is not a compromise — it is a death sentence, as the fish requires high dissolved oxygen delivered continuously. A chiller or a room maintained below 75 °F is often necessary; the species will deteriorate in water that rises much above that.
The tank must be biologically mature before Beaufortia fasciolata is added. Allow months for a visible algal and diatom film to develop on all rock surfaces under moderate lighting before introducing the fish. A group of four to six individuals is appropriate; lone specimens are more exposed to stress. Because the skin is scaleless, copper-based medications and formalin treatments must be avoided, and any medication used at all should be at a reduced dose monitored carefully. Tankmates, if any, should be other rheophilic species that tolerate the same cool, fast, high-oxygen conditions — most community tropicals are incompatible on temperature or flow grounds.
Water changes of 20–30% weekly with temperature-matched, dechlorinated water maintain the low nutrient levels this stream-adapted fish prefers. Nitrate should be kept low; elevated organic load promotes algae of inferior nutritional value and can indicate inadequate filtration for the high oxygen demand of the species.
Conservation
Beaufortia fasciolata has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. This is a small-range endemic of the Annamite ranges of Vietnam — a mountain system that has yielded a remarkable number of narrow-range endemic freshwater fishes over the past three decades and where new species continue to be described. The restricted distribution and habitat specificity of torrent-dwelling species like this one make them inherently vulnerable to catchment disturbance.
The principal threats in the Annamite highlands are hydropower development (which eliminates torrent habitat by flooding gorge reaches and interrupting sediment and thermal regimes), deforestation of riparian and upstream catchment areas (which raises water temperature, increases sediment load and degrades the clear-fast-cool conditions rheophilic species require), and the collection pressure that attends any narrow-range aquarium species with limited habitat. Whether wild collection for the ornamental trade constitutes a significant pressure on Beaufortia fasciolata specifically is unknown in the absence of population data. Responsible sourcing — ideally from fish with documented breeding in captivity, or from collectors operating under monitored quotas — is prudent for any Annamite-range endemic.
