Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is a small hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae, described from the fast, clear streams of the Huangguoshu region in Guizhou Province, southern China. Like all members of the genus Beaufortia, it is a specialist of cool, turbulent, highly oxygenated torrent water — its flattened body and modified pelvic and pectoral fins form a broad adhesive disc that anchors it against the current while it rasps biofilm and diatoms from the surface of submerged rocks. It is a rare, small-range endemic that is seldom encountered in the international aquarium trade and has received no formal IUCN conservation assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia huangguoshuensis was described by Zheng and Zhang in 1987, with the type locality given as fast rocky streams in the Huangguoshu area of Guizhou Province, south-western China. The species epithet directly commemorates that type locality — Huangguoshu is best known for its large waterfall complex on the Baishuihe River, and the streams of the surrounding karst highlands harbour a suite of endemic rheophilic fishes.

The genus Beaufortia belongs to the subfamily Balitorinae within the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches, sometimes called torrent loaches or butterfly loaches. It is distinct from the true loaches of the families Cobitidae and Botiidae. Several other Beaufortia species occur in the stream systems of southern and south-western China, including Beaufortia leveretti and Beaufortia kweichowensis; the Huangguoshu region sits in a zone of high endemism for this genus. No synonyms are recorded for this species in the available literature.

Morphology

As in all Beaufortia, the body is strongly depressed — flattened top-to-bottom — with the pectoral and pelvic fins spread horizontally to form a broad, fleshy disc on the ventral surface. This arrangement creates a hydrodynamic profile that generates downward suction in fast current, allowing the fish to cling to smooth or irregular rock faces in water that would sweep away a conventional fish. The head is broad and flattened; the mouth is positioned ventrally and equipped with fleshy lips and small rasping teeth suited to scraping biofilm.

The body is near-scaleless, with the skin smooth or finely textured; this is a consistent trait of the Balitoridae and has real consequences for medication sensitivity. Coloration in Beaufortia species typically runs to mottled browns, ochres and dark reticulations that provide camouflage against the gravelled, stony stream beds the fish inhabit. Precise maximum length for Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is not well documented in the accessible literature, but Beaufortia species are generally small — most reach 2–3 in total length, consistent with life in narrow, shallow hill streams.

Habitat

Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is native to fast-flowing, rocky hill streams in Guizhou Province, south-western China — a landscape of karst limestone plateaus cut by clear, highly oxygenated torrents. The Huangguoshu area sits at moderate elevation, and the streams there are cool relative to lowland tropical rivers, well-oxygenated, and run over a substrate of bare rock, coarse gravel and boulders scoured clean by strong current. The water is typically clear and low in dissolved organic material.

This is the defining environment for hillstream loach biology: high dissolved oxygen, strong directional flow, cool temperature and a clean rock surface colonised by the biofilm of algae, diatoms and microscopic invertebrates that these fish depend on. Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is entirely a freshwater fish of this specialised rheophilic niche; it has no connection to warm, still lowland river habitats.

Feeding

Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. Using its ventrally-placed rasping mouth, it scrapes the thin film of algae, diatoms, periphyton and associated micro-invertebrates from the upper surfaces of rocks and boulders in fast water. This biofilm is its primary food source in the wild, and the fish is highly adapted to exploiting it: in conditions of strong current, constant grazing pressure keeps the rock surface in a perpetual early-successional stage that maximises the nutritional density of the film.

In an aquarium, feeding is the axis on which captive care most often fails. A newly established tank with bare, sterile rocks offers nothing for the fish to graze; it will starve before the biofilm has time to develop. Mature tanks with a rich coating of green or brown algae on their rocks are essential, supplemented by small amounts of sinking wafers or tablets, blanched greens such as spinach or courgette, and occasional small frozen foods like daphnia or micro-worm. The fish is not a flake-eater and is not a substitute for a conventional algae-eater in a community tank.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Beaufortia huangguoshuensis has not been described in any accessible source. In related Beaufortia and balitorid species the sexes are generally difficult to distinguish externally outside of breeding condition; females may appear broader-bodied when gravid. There is no suborbital spine in Balitoridae (that feature belongs to the Botiidae), so the diagnostic structures used in botiid sexing are absent here.

In the wild, breeding in Beaufortia and related hillstream genera is presumed to be seasonal, likely tied to spring and early summer rises in water temperature after the cold-season low, and possibly to changes in discharge. No detailed field study of the reproductive behaviour of Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is available in the accessible literature, and the species has not been documented spawning in captivity.

Breeding

Beaufortia huangguoshuensis has not been bred in home aquaria to any documented degree. Hillstream loaches of the family Balitoridae are egg-scatterers with no parental care: when they do spawn, eggs are deposited among the interstices of gravel and rocks in fast-flowing water, receiving no tending by either parent. The honest position for most Beaufortia is that captive breeding has not been achieved, or has been achieved only incidentally in large, mature, strongly-flowing display tanks with conditions closely mimicking the wild habitat.

A small number of hillstream loach species — notably Sewellia lineolata — have been bred in mature, high-flow river-style aquaria, but these are the exception rather than the rule in the group. For Beaufortia huangguoshuensis specifically, the species' rarity in the trade and the absence of published captive-breeding accounts mean keepers should not plan to breed this fish. The trade supply, where any exists, is presumed to be wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Beaufortia huangguoshuensis is a demanding species suited to the specialist keeper, not to general community tanks. The overriding requirement is replication of its natural torrent habitat: strong, directional water flow (turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is a reasonable target), high dissolved oxygen (a surface agitator or spraybars help), cool water in the range typical of southern Chinese hill streams (around 64–75 °F), and a mature aquascape of smooth or rounded rocks colonised by a well-established biofilm. These conditions together are the opposite of a warm, still, planted community tank.

The near-scaleless skin shared by all Balitoridae makes this species sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many proprietary treatments. Any medication should be used at reduced dosage with careful monitoring, and copper-based products should be avoided entirely. Because the skin offers relatively little barrier to chemical absorption, water quality must be high — ammonia and nitrite spikes are especially dangerous. In a well-managed specialist setup with companions of similar size and temperature preference — other Beaufortia or balitorid species, small cold-tolerant mountain danios — this is a characterful and fascinating fish to observe as it navigates the current and rasps rock surfaces. In a warm, still, newly set-up tank, it will not thrive.

Conservation

Beaufortia huangguoshuensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is common for small-range Chinese stream endemics, where taxonomic uncertainty, limited survey effort and restricted distribution combine to leave many species unevaluated despite genuine conservation concern.

The Huangguoshu region of Guizhou, like much of southern China's upland karst watershed, faces pressures from agricultural run-off, dam construction on major river systems, and catchment disturbance associated with road building and forestry. For a species with a restricted range in a single river system or cluster of streams, local degradation of water quality or altered hydrology represents a meaningful threat even without a formal Red List assessment. The aquarium trade pressure on this species is likely negligible given its rarity in commerce, but wild collection for the specialist market adds a marginal additional concern. As data accumulate, a formal assessment of this and related Guizhou-endemic Beaufortia species would be valuable.
