Taxonomy & naming
Beaufortia intermedia was described by Tang and Wang in 1997 and is listed under that authority in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names. It belongs to the family Gastromyzontidae — sometimes still placed in the broader Balitoridae in older literature — a family of flattened hillstream loaches endemic to South and East Asia.
The genus Beaufortia contains fourteen currently recognised species, all confined to China and the adjacent portions of mainland Southeast Asia. The genus is named in honour of the Dutch ichthyologist Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort. Within the genus, B. intermedia is a moderately sized species whose specific epithet, intermedia, means 'intermediate', likely referring to some morphological character intermediate between two other species or forms recognised at the time of description. No widely used trade names appear in the literature for this species.
Morphology
Like all Gastromyzontidae, Beaufortia intermedia is profoundly flattened in the ventral plane — a body shape evolved for life on the surfaces of rocks in fast-flowing streams. The head is broad and depressed, the pectoral and pelvic fins are spread horizontally to form a suction surface, and the mouth is adapted to rasp biofilm from hard substrates. This whole-body suction disc holds the fish firmly against rock even in powerful current.
The body is near-scaleless and effectively naked in texture — a feature shared across the loach lineages that makes Beaufortia species sensitive to copper-based and certain other medications. Size data for B. intermedia specifically are sparse in the accessible literature; as with comparable Beaufortia species, adults are likely in the range of 2–3 in total length, though this figure is not confirmed for the species and should be treated with caution. The suborbital spine that typifies the botiid loaches is absent in gastromyzontids; this family uses body shape rather than spines as its primary defence.
Habitat
Beaufortia intermedia is native to China and inhabits the subtropical zone, consistent with its FishBase distribution record. Gastromyzontid loaches of this genus occupy fast-flowing hill and mountain streams with rocky, stony or gravel substrates and highly oxygenated water. These streams are typically clear, cool by tropical standards, and carry low organic loads — they are not the warm, tannin-stained lowland rivers of Sundaland but the torrent zones of upland drainages.
Water temperature in the natural habitat is lower than in a warm community aquarium; data for closely related Beaufortia species in the hobby (used here as a genus-level proxy) indicate temperatures in the range of 68–75 °F as suitable, with tolerance declining sharply above 79 °F. The habitat is rheophilic — the fish requires strong, continuous water movement and will suffocate in still, poorly oxygenated conditions. Substrate consists of boulders, cobbles and bedrock coated in periphyton, diatoms and algae, which form the food source.
Feeding
Beaufortia intermedia is a herbivore and detritivore (FishBase trophic level 2.7) that feeds primarily by rasping biofilm, algae, diatoms and fine organic detritus from hard surfaces — a feeding mode termed aufwuchs grazing. In the wild this means continuously working across the surface of rocks in the current, never leaving the substrate for open water.
In the aquarium, providing adequate nutrition is the single greatest challenge and the commonest cause of death. A bare or newly-established tank offers nothing to eat and the fish will slowly starve. A mature tank with biofilm-covered rocks is the foundation; this can be supplemented with algae wafers, blanched greens (courgette, spinach, cucumber), sinking spirulina-based pellets, and small live or frozen invertebrates such as mosquito larvae, Daphnia and brine shrimp. The fish will not reliably take flake food from the water column — it feeds from surfaces. Supplementary feeding must be offered until the tank biofilm is self-sustaining, and the biofilm surface must never be over-cleaned.
Mating
Virtually nothing is documented in the accessible literature specifically about the reproductive biology or sexual dimorphism of Beaufortia intermedia. At the genus and family level, female gastromyzontid loaches are generally fuller-bodied when gravid, which can allow sexing of ripe fish by experienced keepers, but external differences are otherwise minimal.
Breeding in Gastromyzontidae is best documented for a handful of species in the allied genera Sewellia and Gastromyzon. In those taxa, spawning appears to be triggered by strong water flow, cool temperatures and the presence of mature biofilm on hard surfaces. Courtship behaviour in the genus is not described in the available literature for B. intermedia.
Breeding
Beaufortia intermedia has not been documented as bred in home aquaria in the accessible literature, and is essentially unknown in the trade under its own name. At the genus level, hillstream loaches of this family are rarely spawned by hobbyists; breeding, where it occurs at all, requires pristine, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water at cool temperatures in a mature tank with abundant biofilm, and may be triggered by increased flow combined with live or frozen foods.
The honest picture for this species is data sparse: no verified home-spawning accounts are known to the author. Eggs would be deposited among stones or gravel in flowing water, with no parental care, consistent with the egg-scattering mode typical of the family. Any keeper attempting to breed this species should approach it as a long-term project requiring near-perfect water conditions and a very mature, well-stocked biofilm substrate.
In the aquarium
Beaufortia intermedia is not a fish for a standard community aquarium, and the conditions it needs are incompatible with most warm-water setups. The single most important requirement is powerful, continuous water flow — turnover of ten to fifteen times the tank volume per hour is cited for congeners — combined with high dissolved oxygen and temperatures no higher than 75 °F. A purpose-built hillstream or river biotope tank with a powerhead or wavemaker directing flow across a rock-strewn substrate is the correct setup; a warm, still community tank will kill it through a combination of overheating, oxygen depletion and starvation.
The tank must be mature: a bed of natural rocks, flat stones and pebbles colonised by algae and biofilm over months is the feeding ground. Being near-scaleless, Beaufortia is sensitive to copper-based medications and should be dosed at half-strength or less if treatment is needed; it can also be vulnerable to ich and should be monitored closely. Tank size should allow for reasonable territory between individuals; while group-living is not a strict requirement as it is for obligate-social botiids, multiple specimens can be kept together if space and biofilm supply are adequate. Water quality must be excellent — ammonia and nitrite at zero, nitrate low — since the fish has evolved for pristine stream water.
Conservation
Beaufortia intermedia is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2023). A Data Deficient assessment does not mean the species is not threatened — it means that insufficient information exists to assign a category. For a geographically restricted stream fish in subtropical China, the real-world threats are likely to include water diversion for irrigation and hydropower, catchment deforestation, sedimentation reducing the clean-rock substrates on which the species depends, and water pollution.
The species is essentially absent from the international aquarium trade under its own name, so collecting pressure is not identified as a driver. Meaningful conservation assessment will require field surveys to establish range, population size and trends. Until that information is available, the DD listing stands as a reminder that data gaps are not the same as safety.
