Beaufortia cyclica is a small, flattened hillstream loach from fast-flowing, rocky streams in southern China, described by Chen in 1980. Like all members of its genus, it is built for life in the current: a sucker-like arrangement of the pelvic fins anchors it to rock surfaces while it rasps biofilm and diatoms from the stone. It is a cool, highly oxygenated, fast-water specialist — a fish that starves and suffocates in the warm, still, bare tanks it is sometimes placed in. Seldom kept and rarely written about in English-language hobby literature, it remains one of the many small Balitoridae whose natural history and aquarium requirements are only partially documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia cyclica was described by Chen in 1980 and belongs to the genus Beaufortia, a group of dorsoventrally flattened hillstream loaches in the family Balitoridae (sometimes placed within the broader Gastromyzontinae). The family Balitoridae sits within the order Cypriniformes and is part of the superfamily Cobitoidea, a group whose internal taxonomy has been substantially revised in recent decades.

The genus Beaufortia is restricted to East Asia, particularly southern China and adjacent portions of Southeast Asia, and is characterised by its strongly depressed body form, the sucker-like pelvic disc that anchors it to rock in fast current, and its adhesive oral disc for grazing biofilm. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name; the combination Beaufortia cyclica Chen, 1980 is the currently accepted binomial. No synonyms or earlier combinations are noted for this species in available sources.

Morphology

Beaufortia cyclica is a small loach, typically reaching around 2–3 in in standard length. Its most striking feature is its extreme dorsoventral flattening: the body is depressed from top to bottom, broad relative to its depth, and shaped to press flush against a rock surface in flowing water. The head is wide and flattened, with a downward-facing oral disc equipped with hardened lips and fine teeth for rasping material from rock.

The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and held horizontally, forming a sucker-like adhesive surface when the fish presses against the substrate — a structure that is not a true sucker but achieves a similar effect through the combined action of the fin surfaces and the oral disc. The dorsal surface is mottled in browns and tans with darker blotching, providing camouflage against the patterned rock substrate. The species lacks the prominent erectile suborbital spine of the botiid loaches (Botiidae); Balitoridae are a distinct family and do not share that feature. The skin is nearly scaleless and thin-textured, a point that has implications for medication sensitivity.

Habitat

Beaufortia cyclica is native to fast-flowing rocky streams and mountain torrents in southern China. It is a rheophilic species — a current specialist — occupying habitats with strong, well-oxygenated flow over bedrock, cobble, and boulder substrates where biofilm, diatoms, and algae accumulate on exposed stone surfaces. These streams are typically clear and cool, running at temperatures in the range of 61–72 °F (61–72 °F), with a neutral-to-slightly-acidic pH.

The species is found at altitude in upland drainages, not in lowland still waters. The high dissolved oxygen content maintained by turbulent flow is as important as the current itself: Beaufortia and related hillstream genera are adapted to water that is continually aerated by fast movement over rocks, and they are physiologically poorly equipped for the low-oxygen conditions of warm, still aquaria.

Feeding

Beaufortia cyclica is an aufwuchs grazer — it lives by rasping the thin biological film of algae, diatoms, microorganisms and organic particles that coats submerged rock in clear, fast streams. This biofilm is the primary food source, and the fish's oral disc is specifically adapted to harvest it from hard, irregular surfaces.

In the aquarium, diet is one of the most critical management challenges. The species will not thrive in a bare or recently established tank where biofilm has not had time to develop on rock surfaces. A mature, well-lit aquarium with a dense covering of algae and biofilm on rocks is the foundation of the diet; this can be supplemented with blanched greens (courgette, cucumber, spinach), sinking algae wafers and spirulina tablets, and occasionally small frozen invertebrate foods such as daphnia or micro-worms. Generic flake food is inadequate as a diet base. Starvation is the single most common cause of death in badly managed hillstream loaches.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Beaufortia cyclica is not well documented in available sources. In related Beaufortia species, females are generally plumper-bodied when in spawning condition, but the sexes are otherwise difficult to distinguish externally. Reliably sexing the fish typically requires observing them over time in a mature tank.

In the wild, spawning in hillstream balitorids is believed to be associated with the seasonal fluctuations of upland streams — changes in water temperature, flow rate, and photoperiod that accompany the transition between wet and dry seasons. The specific mating behaviour of B. cyclica has not been described in published sources accessible to this survey.

Breeding

Beaufortia cyclica is not known to have been bred in home aquaria with any regularity. The species is an egg-scatterer: like other Balitoridae, it deposits adhesive eggs among stones and gravel in flowing water, with no subsequent parental care. This is the typical reproductive strategy for hillstream loaches as a group.

A small number of related hillstream genera — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been induced to spawn in mature, strongly-flowing river tanks, demonstrating that the group is not categorically unbreedy in captivity. However, most Beaufortia species, including B. cyclica, are considered rarely or never bred in the aquarium hobby. The species is not commonly available in the trade, and no detailed captive-spawning accounts have been documented in sources available to this survey. The honest expectation for a keeper is that spawning will not occur under ordinary home-aquarium conditions.

In the aquarium

Keeping Beaufortia cyclica successfully depends on replicating its core physical requirements: strong, turbulent flow, cool water, high dissolved oxygen, and a mature, biofilm-covered rockscape. A dedicated hillstream biotope tank — a long, shallow aquarium with a powerful powerhead or wavemaker creating unidirectional flow across a bed of smooth cobbles and flat rocks — is the appropriate setup. The rocks must be colonised by biofilm before the fish is introduced; newly set-up tanks kill these loaches through starvation, not toxicity.

Temperature should be held in the 61–72 °F range (61–72 °F); warmer conditions depress dissolved oxygen and stress the fish. Standard tropical community temperatures (77–82 °F) are too warm and should not be used. Because the skin is nearly scaleless, B. cyclica absorbs medications rapidly and is sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of many common remedies; if treatment is necessary, half-doses and careful product selection are the rule. The species is peaceful and benign in a species tank or with other fast-water hillstream fish of similar size. It is not an appropriate inhabitant of a standard community aquarium.

Availability in the trade is limited, and the species is seldom offered in Western markets. Its small size (2–3 in) means the physical footprint is modest, but the requirement for strong flow, cool water, and a mature, biofilm-rich environment makes it a fish for experienced keepers with a dedicated setup rather than a beginner's community tank.

Conservation

Beaufortia cyclica has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is characteristic of many small-range hillstream loaches from southern China — the region is species-rich in upland stream fish, and formal assessments have not kept pace with the diversity.

The species is endemic to fast-flowing upland streams in southern China, a habitat type that faces ongoing pressure from dam construction, water extraction, sedimentation from land clearance, and agricultural runoff. These pressures are broadly documented for southern Chinese freshwater fish, and small-range rheophilic specialists with narrow ecological tolerances are considered among the more vulnerable groups. No trade-driven population pressure is known for this species, which is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade. Data on its distribution and population status remain sparse.
