Beaufortia kweichowensis, the butterfly hillstream loach, is a small torrent-adapted balitorid from the fast hill streams of southern China. Its flattened, disc-like body and pectoral fins spread wide against rock — an evolutionary answer to life in swift, well-oxygenated current — and in motion it does resemble a butterfly skimming stone. Endemic to the Xi Jiang (West River) drainage of Guizhou, Guangxi and Guangdong provinces, it is a cool, high-flow, oxygen-hungry biofilm grazer that starves in a bare tank and suffocates in still, warm water. That mismatch with the conditions of a typical community aquarium is why it is both genuinely beautiful and genuinely difficult: rewarding for a keeper who builds a proper hillstream river tank around it, a slow decline for one who does not.

Taxonomy & naming

Beaufortia kweichowensis was described by the Chinese ichthyologist Ping-wen Fang in 1931, which is reflected by the parentheses around the authority — the original genus combination differed from the current one. The species is placed in the genus Beaufortia, family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches), within the superfamily Cobitoidea. The Balitoridae underwent extensive revision during the early twenty-first century, with several genera split and reassigned, but Beaufortia itself has remained stable as a valid genus for the hillstream loaches of East and Southeast Asia.

The species epithet kweichowensis is a toponym derived from Kweichow, the old romanisation of Guizhou Province in southern China — the type locality of San-ho Hsien in the upper Xi Jiang basin is in present-day Guizhou. In trade it is sold most often as the butterfly hillstream loach, a name it shares loosely with other flattened balitorids, so the scientific name is the more reliable identifier.

Morphology

The defining feature of Beaufortia kweichowensis is its dorso-ventrally flattened body, which — together with its broad, wing-like pectoral and pelvic fins — forms a ventral adhesive surface for clinging to smooth rock in fast current. Seen from above, a fish pressed to a stone does resemble a butterfly at rest, which accounts for the common name. The mouth is positioned on the underside, furnished with lips adapted for rasping biofilm from hard substrates. The overall build is stocky and compact, with a short, rounded tail.

Adult size reaches around 2.5–3 in total length, with most individuals in the aquarium remaining at 2.5–3 in. The skin is near-scaleless — the body is largely naked to the touch, with only small embedded scales — a characteristic of most balitorids that has real implications for disease susceptibility and medication. Colouration is variable but typically brown to tan with a mottled or spotted pattern of darker markings that provides cryptic camouflage against rock and gravel.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Xi Jiang (West River) drainage of southern China, recorded from Guizhou, Guangxi and Guangdong provinces. The type locality — San-ho Hsien in Guizhou — lies at around 656 ft elevation (approximately 650 ft), in the headwater hill-stream reaches of the Xi Jiang system. Here the water is cool, clear, fast-flowing and highly oxygenated, running over smooth rock and gravel with little silt or accumulated organic matter.

This is a rheophilic species: it is adapted to, and dependent on, flowing water with high dissolved oxygen. The preferred temperature range is 61–75 °F, significantly cooler than a typical tropical community aquarium. The pH range of natural habitat is reported as 6.5–8.0 — not extreme chemistry, but the oxygen content and flow are non-negotiable. Stagnant or warm water quickly produces stress; the species belongs to fast hill streams, not ponds or sluggish lowland rivers.

Feeding

Beaufortia kweichowensis is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps algae, diatoms and biofilm from hard surfaces in fast, clear water. In the wild this means a constant supply of periphyton growing on sunlit, current-swept rock. In an aquarium, this translates to an absolute requirement for a mature tank with algae- and biofilm-covered rockwork. A newly set-up tank, however beautifully decorated, provides essentially nothing for this fish to eat, and a fish moved to a bare or sterile environment will starve quietly.

Once established, the diet can be supplemented with high-quality sinking wafers and discs with a high spirulina or vegetable content, blanched courgette, cucumber and spinach, and small frozen foods such as bloodworm that sink into the flow. The key principle is that plant-based biofilm food must form the nutritional core, with animal protein as a supplement rather than the staple. It is not a fish that will learn to compete for food mid-water; food must reach the substrate and be given in a form the fish can rasp at its own pace.

Mating

Within a group, males are reported to be territorial toward one another, defending patches of rock from rivals. This territorial behaviour intensifies when suitable spawning sites are in limited supply and is presumably linked to mate attraction in the wild — a male holding clean, well-oxygenated rock may signal fitness as a spawning partner. External sex differences in Beaufortia kweichowensis are subtle; males are generally slimmer-bodied than females when the latter are ripe, but the two sexes can be difficult to distinguish outside of breeding condition.

Seasonal triggers for reproduction in the wild likely follow patterns common to southern Chinese hill-stream fish — shifts in temperature and flow associated with monsoon rainfall. The precise mating behaviour of this species in its natural habitat is not documented in detail in the available literature.

Breeding

Beaufortia kweichowensis is not reliably bred in home aquaria. The available literature records no confirmed captive spawnings; the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs among stones in fast current, with no parental care from either sex — a pattern typical of hillstream balitorids. A few related hillstream loaches (notably Sewellia lineolata in a mature, strongly-flowing river tank) have been spawned in captivity, but for the vast majority of hillstream loach genera, including Beaufortia, successful home breeding is not recorded.

The honest picture for this species is that the fish in the trade are wild-collected from China. A keeper should not purchase this fish expecting to breed it; the goal should be to maintain it well in a proper hillstream environment. If spawning were ever to occur it would most likely require a mature river tank with very strong flow, cool temperatures and a well-established biofilm layer on the substrate, but even then it would be an unexpected outcome.

In the aquarium

Beaufortia kweichowensis is rated as moderate to difficult in care, and the difficulty is almost entirely about flow, oxygen, temperature and biofilm — not chemistry or diet variety in any unusual sense. The single most common cause of decline is placing it in a typical warm tropical community aquarium: 79–82 °F still water is not its habitat. It needs a dedicated hillstream or river tank with powerful filtration and circulation generating a turnover of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour, temperatures in the 61–75 °F range, and clean, well-oxygenated water over a rockscape that has been allowed to mature for several months so that algae and biofilm colonise the surfaces. Without that biological maturity, the fish has nothing to eat.

It is a peaceful, social species best kept in groups of six or more — males can be territorial in pairs but a larger group distributes aggression and results in a more settled, active community on the rockwork. Compatible tankmates should be small, fast-water species that share its temperature requirements: other hillstream loaches, small danios, or hillstream-adapted gobies. It should not be housed with large, boisterous fish that displace it from feeding sites, or with anything that requires the warm, still water this species cannot tolerate. Because its skin is near-scaleless, it is sensitive to medications containing copper and to full-strength treatments; any dosing should be conservative, and the fish monitored closely. It is also, like many balitorids, among the first inhabitants of a tank to show signs of poor water quality.

Conservation

Beaufortia kweichowensis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than guessing at a status. Its native range is the Xi Jiang (West River) drainage of southern China, a river system that has experienced significant anthropogenic pressure: agricultural runoff, urban and industrial pollution, and hydroelectric development have altered water quality and flow conditions across the basin. An endemic hillstream specialist with narrow ecological tolerances — clean, cool, fast, oxygenated water — is inherently vulnerable to any degradation of that habitat.

The species is present in the international aquarium trade as wild-collected fish. There is no documentation of large-scale captive breeding in the trade, which means collection pressure falls entirely on wild populations. The combination of a restricted endemic range, an industrialised catchment, and dependence on wild collection makes this species one that deserves closer study and eventual formal assessment, even if the current population status is unknown.
