Cobitis arenae was described by Linnaeus in 1758, placing it among the very first fishes to receive a formal binomial name under the modern system of nomenclature. It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined loaches — which today comprises around 97 recognized species spread across a broad swath of temperate and subtropical Eurasia, from Portugal in the west to Japan in the east, with outposts in North Africa.
