Cobitis arenata is a name with a tangled history: Achille Valenciennes described it in 1840, but the fish it names has since been folded into a wider revision of the zipper loaches, and it is now treated as a junior synonym of Paracanthocobitis botia. Whatever combination it is filed under, the animal itself is a small, slender, sand-dwelling loach of the family Cobitidae, carrying the erectile suborbital spine that gives the spined loaches their name. It is a coolwater to subtropical species rather than a heated-tank tropical, doing best in the moderate temperatures of its native streams, and — like most of its relatives — it is essentially unknown as a captive-bred fish.

Cobitis arenata was described by the French ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes in 1840. Taxonomic work on the Cobitoidea since then has been extensive and often disruptive, and this name has not survived as valid: it is now regarded as a junior synonym of Paracanthocobitis botia (Hamilton, 1822), a species long carried in the hobby and literature under Acanthocobitis botia before the zipper loaches were revised into the genus Paracanthocobitis within the family Nemacheilidae. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for which combination is currently valid, and this article keeps the requested name and genus, Cobitis arenata, while flagging that synonymy rather than silently presenting it as an accepted, independent species.

This kind of reshuffling is normal across the true loaches: the old catch-all genera Botia, Noemacheilus and Acanthocobitis have all been split and re-split as DNA and detailed anatomical work clarified relationships, and species described in the 19th century under one genus frequently end up folded into, or split out of, another. The body is elongated and slender, built for burrowing and threading through sand and fine gravel, and the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales — effectively naked to the touch, a trait that matters for how the fish should be medicated.

Reports associated with this name and its accepted synonym describe a modestly sized loach, on the order of 2–3 in standard length, well short of the giants of the botiid group. Colouration in the zipper-loach group is typically a pale, sandy base crossed by a broken or zig-zagging dark lateral pattern — the "zipper" the common name refers to — that provides effective camouflage over a sandy or fine-gravel streambed.

Habitat

This is a coolwater to subtropical loach, not a warm tropical species. Sources tied to this name and its accepted synonym place it in temperate-to-subtropical Eurasian and South Asian freshwater systems, with the wider Cobitis lineage native across Europe, Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Middle East and the Maghreb, and the zipper-loach group extending into South Asia. It lives over sand and fine gravel in flowing streams and rivers, where it can bury or partially bury itself and sift the substrate.

In the aquarium this translates to a moderately cool, well-oxygenated tank rather than a heated tropical setup — the sources tied to this fish suggest a comfortable range in the high teens to low twenties Celsius. A soft, sand or fine-gravel bed is essential, both for the fish's natural sifting behaviour and for the comfort of its scaleless underside; sharp or coarse substrate is a genuine welfare problem for this group.

Feeding

Like other members of the true-loach group, this is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. In the wild it forages through soft substrate for small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae and other tiny prey — along with some detritus, using its barbels to locate food buried in the sand and its subterminal mouth to sift it out.

In the aquarium it should be offered sinking foods that reach the bottom: sinking pellets and wafers alongside live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and similar small invertebrate foods. A soft substrate is not just behavioural enrichment here but a feeding requirement — a loach that cannot dig and sift naturally is a loach that struggles to find food on hard or coarse gravel.

Mating

Detailed sexing and courtship information specific to this name is sparse; data is thin for many of the smaller Cobitoidea outside the well-studied botiids and a handful of European Cobitis species. In loaches generally, ripe females tend to appear noticeably fuller-bodied than males when in breeding condition, but the wider group offers little further useful information here.

Related zipper-loach accounts describe wild-caught fish that eat their own eggs in captivity and only very rarely produce surviving fry in an aquarium.

Where spawning is reported at all in this group, the pattern is egg-scattering with no parental care: eggs are adhesive and deposited among plants or fine substrate, and the adults take no further part once eggs are laid. A keeper should not expect to breed this fish and should treat any captive-bred individuals as a rare exception rather than the norm.

In the aquarium

This is a peaceful, undemanding bottom-dweller once its two core needs are met: a soft substrate to sift and dig in, and cool-to-moderate rather than tropical water temperatures. A tank of roughly 35.5 in or more with a soft sand or fine-gravel floor, some cover from rockwork or wood, and moderate flow suits it well; it is adaptable and generally hardy within that coolwater range.

As with the rest of the true loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many standard treatments — half-doses and gentle products are the safer route if treatment is ever needed. Because it is not bred in captivity, aquarium stock is wild-collected, so buyers should expect an adjustment period on arrival and should not house it with aggressive or overly boisterous tankmates that would out-compete it for food sifted from the bottom.
