Cobitis avicennae is a small spined loach described in 2015 from the Tigris River drainage of western Iran, one of several Cobitis species that carve up the region's rivers into narrow, locally endemic ranges. It is a true loach of the temperate Palearctic, not a warm tropical fish: it lives in cool upland streams over gravel and sand, and like every member of its genus it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the spined loaches their name, along with the near-scaleless skin typical of the group. Almost nothing has been published on keeping it in the aquarium — this is a fish known from ichthyological survey work, not the hobby — so what follows leans on its genus and its stream habitat rather than any home-aquarium track record.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis avicennae was formally described in 2015 by Hadi Mousavi-Sabet, Soheil Vatandoust, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Matthias Geiger and Jörg Freyhof, published in the journal Zootaxa (volume 3914, issue 5) as one of a wave of new Cobitis species split out of Iran's poorly known river systems. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the spined loaches proper, within the genus Cobitis — the temperate Eurasian genus that gives the family its common name.

The species epithet honours Ibn Sina, known in the West as Avicenna, the 10th–11th century Persian polymath and physician — a naming choice that ties the fish to the Iranian region it was described from rather than to any physical trait. Cobitis is a large and still-active genus taxonomically: Iranian and wider Middle Eastern watersheds have yielded several similar, narrowly distributed spined loaches in recent years (including relatives such as C. elazigensis further west in the Tigris system), and species boundaries within the group continue to be refined by genetic and morphological work. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Cobitis avicennae.

Morphology

Cobitis avicennae is a small, slender, bottom-dwelling loach reaching a modest 4.5 in in standard length. As a member of Cobitidae it carries the family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine, a small blade hidden in a groove below the eye that can be flicked out — a defensive feature shared with its botiid relatives, though Cobitis is a much smaller-bodied, more elongate fish than the boisterous Botia-type loaches sold in the trade.

The original description separates it from its close Iranian relatives on a set of fine anatomical details: males possess a single lamina circularis (a small bony plate used in species-level identification within Cobitis), the upper base of the caudal fin bears a small comma-shaped black spot, the anal fin carries 5½ branched rays, and the dorsal and caudal fins show five to six rows of dark spots. Like other spined loaches its scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin effectively naked — a trait that matters for disease sensitivity rather than for looks.

Habitat

The species is known from the Tigris River drainage in western Iran, recorded from the Karkheh, Sirwan and Razavar rivers. Its type locality is a shallow, narrow upland stream around five metres wide, with a mix of pools and riffles over a gravel bed; specimens were taken from moderate depths of roughly 12–19.5 in, resting above and within the gravel rather than in open water.

This is a temperate, upland Palearctic stream habitat, not a warm lowland tropical one — Cobitis as a genus spans temperate and subtropical Eurasia, from Morocco and Portugal in the west to China and Japan in the east, and several of its species, including close Iranian relatives of C. avicennae, are coolwater fish of clear, flowing rivers rather than heated tropical systems. Clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a gravel-and-sand substrate is the defining feature of the habitat this species is drawn from.

Feeding

Cobitis avicennae is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore in the pattern typical of its genus: small food items sifted from the streambed, including chydorid and copepod crustaceans, rhizopods, other tiny invertebrates and organic detritus. Like other Cobitis it forages by working over and through a soft substrate rather than hunting in open water, using its sensitive barbels to locate food buried in sand or fine gravel.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but the genus's habits are consistent enough that a keeper should plan around a soft-substrate sifter: small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp), sinking wafers, and a fine sand or fine gravel bed that lets the fish forage naturally, rather than a bare or coarse-gravel setup that gives it nothing to sift.

Mating

No published account describes courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Cobitis avicennae; the primary literature on it is a taxonomic description, not a life-history study. Population research on the species has, however, documented aspects of its reproductive biology: a moderate lifespan and body weight, a short spawning-season window, heterogeneous egg sizes, and a comparatively low egg count per female — a profile consistent with a small stream-dwelling Cobitis rather than a prolific species.

Within the genus, spawning is a springtime, substrate-scattering affair with no pairing bond and no nest — a pattern shared across temperate Cobitis species. There is no reason from the available data to expect C. avicennae to differ from that general genus pattern, but there is also no direct observation confirming it in this species.

Breeding

As a spined loach in the genus Cobitis, C. avicennae is expected to be an egg-scatterer that spawns in spring, releasing adhesive eggs among plants or fine substrate with no parental care afterward — this is the established pattern for the genus, and several temperate Cobitis species (along with relatives such as the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus) have been successfully spawned in ponds or coldwater tanks by keepers and researchers. Whether C. avicennae itself has ever been bred outside the wild is not documented in the available sources.

This stands in contrast to the tropical members of Cobitidae — species like the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys — which are generally not bred in captivity. Given how recently C. avicennae was described (2015) and its narrow, remote Iranian range, it is realistic to treat any aquarium breeding of this specific species as unrecorded rather than to assume it follows every detail of its better-studied temperate relatives.

In the aquarium

Cobitis avicennae is not an established aquarium fish — it has no meaningful hobby history, and this entry is built from its taxonomic description and the known habits of its genus rather than from keeper experience. What can be said with reasonable confidence, extrapolating from Cobitis as a whole and its cool, flowing, gravel-bed stream habitat, is that this is a coldwater-to-temperate species, not a warm tropical one: an unheated or lightly heated setup mimicking a clear, oxygen-rich, moderate-flow stream would suit the genus far better than a standard heated tropical community tank.

A fine sand or fine-gravel substrate for natural sifting behaviour, good water movement and oxygenation, and a modest adult size under 4.5 in SL are the practical takeaways. As with all spined loaches, the near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously. Given the total absence of trade or captive-care records, anyone encountering this species would essentially be working from first principles drawn from its genus.

Conservation

Cobitis avicennae has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation category; this entry records it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. Described only in 2015 from a small number of Iranian rivers in the Tigris drainage — the Karkheh, Sirwan and Razavar — it appears to have a genuinely narrow, localized distribution typical of many recently split Iranian Cobitis species.

Stream-endemic loaches of this kind, restricted to a handful of named rivers in a water-stressed region, are typically vulnerable to damming, water extraction and drought even when no formal assessment yet exists. There is no evidence in the available sources of any aquarium trade in this species; it is known from scientific survey work, not commerce.
