Cobitis battalgili is a small, temperate spined loach found only in the Beyşehir Lake basin of central Anatolia, Turkey. It is a true member of the family Cobitidae — the loaches that carry an erectile spine below the eye — and, like its relatives in this cool-water Eurasian genus, it is a bottom-dwelling sand-sifter rather than a tropical showpiece. Named for the pioneering Turkish ichthyologist Fahire Battalgil, it is one of a cluster of narrowly endemic Cobitis species that Turkey's inland lake systems have produced, and it is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because its entire known range sits within a single, pressured drainage basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis battalgili was described by the Romanian ichthyologist Mihai Băcescu in 1962, placed from the outset in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae and the group that gives the whole family its common name of "spined loaches." It sits among a run of similar, narrowly distributed Cobitis species described from Anatolian drainages over the following decades, several of which — including a species named damlae — are its closest relatives and look similar enough that they are separated mainly by fine details of head and body proportions and fin-ray counts rather than obvious external colour differences.

The species epithet honours Fahire Battalgil (1905–1948), an early Turkish ichthyologist whose work helped establish the study of Turkey's freshwater fish fauna. The genus Cobitis has been repeatedly revised as more Anatolian and Balkan populations have been examined and split into distinct species; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for which of these fine-grained splits currently stand, and this article keeps the combination Cobitis battalgili as currently recognized.

Morphology

Like other members of its family, Cobitis battalgili carries the diagnostic feature of the Cobitidae: an erectile, bifurcated spine tucked into a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out when handled or threatened. Its skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, giving it the near-scaleless feel typical of the family — a detail that matters far more for husbandry than for looks, since it makes the fish unusually sensitive to medication.

Habitat

This is a coldwater, temperate species, not a tropical one. Cobitis battalgili is endemic to Turkey, known primarily from the Beyşehir Lake basin and its associated waters in central Anatolia — a landlocked highland lake system rather than a lowland tropical river. FishBase classifies its environment as subtropical freshwater, and congener data for the genus indicate Cobitis species generally favour cool water in the range of roughly 57–64 °F.

Within that basin it lives a classic spined-loach existence: close to the bottom over sandy or muddy substrate, often among rooted vegetation, spending much of its time concealed under stones or buried shallowly in soft sediment. Its entire known distribution being confined to one lake basin is the central fact of its conservation story — there is nowhere else for this population to go if conditions in Beyşehir Lake decline.

Feeding

As a Cobitidae sand-sifter, Cobitis battalgili is best understood as a benthic omnivore that works the substrate rather than the water column. Loaches in this genus root through sand and silt for small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae and other tiny bottom fauna — along with organic detritus, sifting the soft bed through the mouth and gills rather than grazing algae or hunting in open water.

As with all Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications generally, so any veterinary or aquarium care should default to reduced dosing and gentle handling.
