Cobitis biwae, the Japanese striped loach, is a coldwater true loach endemic to Japan, found across the rivers of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Like every member of the family Cobitidae it carries an erectile suborbital spine below the eye and near-scaleless skin, but unlike the warm-water botiids that dominate the hobby, this is a temperate fish built for an unheated tank or pond. It spends its days buried or hidden in sandy and gravel river-bottom substrate, sifting for small invertebrates, and — like several of its temperate relatives — it is one of the few true loaches that has actually been spawned under controlled conditions rather than only farmed.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis biwae was described by David Starr Jordan and John Otterbein Snyder in 1901. It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches — and sits within the broader superfamily Cobitoidea alongside the botiids, kuhlis and hillstream loaches covered elsewhere in this atlas. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination Cobitis biwae, and the species remains in its original genus.

The genus Cobitis is large and historically tangled, with many Eurasian spined loaches described, redescribed and split over the past two centuries as researchers worked out which populations were truly distinct species. Cobitis biwae is one of several loaches restricted to Japan's freshwater systems, and its species epithet references Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake and a noted centre of freshwater endemism on Honshu.

Morphology

This is a slender, elongate loach in classic Cobitis form: a rounded body tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle, a flattened underside suited to life on the riverbed, and two pairs of short barbels around the mouth used to feel out food in sand and gravel. Its ground colour is grey to brown, marked with the dark blotches and stripes that give the species its common name, the Japanese striped loach.

As a true loach it carries the erectile suborbital spine that defines the family Cobitidae — a small, usually retracted spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out in defence. Its skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally naked and, as with other Cobitidae, sensitive to poor water quality and medication. FishBase reports a maximum length of around 4.5 in SL, with hobbyist sources describing adults closer to 3 in — a modest size well suited to a species tank rather than a giant setup.

Habitat

Cobitis biwae is native to Japan, recorded from Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, where it inhabits rivers and streams over sandy and gravel substrate. FishBase classifies it as a temperate-zone freshwater species with benthic and pelagic habits, consistent with a bottom-dwelling loach that also moves through the water column.

Critically, this is a coldwater fish, not a tropical one. Japan's rivers run cool for much of the year, and Cobitis biwae is built for that regime rather than for a heated tropical aquarium. It has also become established outside its native range within Japan itself — FishBase notes introduced, invasive populations in Lake Chuzenji and in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, a reminder that even a small, unassuming loach can spread once moved between watersheds.

Feeding

Cobitis biwae is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. Hobbyist sources describe it foraging over the substrate for aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and small crustaceans, using its barbels to locate prey buried in sand and gravel — the same feeding strategy shared across the true loaches, which depend on a soft, diggable substrate to find food naturally.

In the aquarium it takes a varied diet of sinking foods: small live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and daphnia, along with prepared sinking pellets and wafers. A soft sand or fine gravel bed lets it feed and burrow as it would in the wild; a hard or coarse substrate denies it that natural behaviour and can abrade its barbels and scaleless skin over time.

Mating

Cobitis biwae is oviparous, and FishBase notes distinct pairing behaviour during breeding — spawning pairs form rather than the fish simply broadcasting eggs at random into a group. Reliable external sexing detail is not well documented in the sources available, though as in other Cobitis, mature, gravid females can generally be expected to appear fuller-bodied when in spawning condition.

As a temperate species, its reproductive cycle is tied to Japan's seasons: spawning activity in wild and cultured populations concentrates in spring, as day length and water temperature rise from the winter cold. This seasonal cue is the opposite of the flood-triggered spawning migrations described for many tropical botiid loaches, and it is part of why this species has proven more tractable to spawn under human care than most of its family.

Breeding

Cobitis biwae scatters adhesive eggs among plants and vegetation, typically in spring, with no parental care afterward — the same egg-scattering strategy used across the spined and pond loaches. Unlike the tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or the genus Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not been bred in captivity, several temperate members of this family — species of Cobitis and Sabanejewia, along with the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned successfully, and Cobitis biwae is documented as commercially cultured in Japan, indicating it can be reproduced under controlled, if specialised, conditions.

That said, this is still a loach: the trade and any captive production rely on close attention to seasonal cues, water quality and a suitable spawning substrate, and reliable spontaneous spawning in an ordinary community tank should not be assumed. Parental care is absent in every case — once eggs are scattered, adults take no further part, and fry are on their own from hatching.

In the aquarium

The single most important care point for Cobitis biwae is temperature: this is a coldwater fish, not a tropical community species, and hobbyist sources put its comfortable range at roughly 54–72 °F, meaning it does well in an unheated tank kept in a cool room, or even a suitably managed outdoor pond in temperate climates. Housing it in a heated tropical setup alongside typical tropical community fish is a mismatch that stresses the fish over time.

Give it a soft sand or fine gravel substrate for natural digging and foraging, good filtration and clean, well-oxygenated water, and it is described as a solitary, somewhat territorial fish rather than an obligate shoaler — a contrast with the group-dependent botiid loaches. Being near-scaleless like all true loaches, it is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dose. A well-equipped, mature aquarium with attention to its coldwater needs suits it best.

Conservation

Cobitis biwae has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List, so it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Many small-range Japanese stream and river loaches fall into this same gap, lacking a global assessment despite regional data existing in Japanese ichthyological literature.

The species is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, and notably, human-mediated movement within Japan itself has created invasive populations in Lake Chuzenji and eastern Shizuoka Prefecture — a caution against transplanting fish between watersheds even inside their native country. It is commercially cultured in Japan, which may reduce pressure on wild populations for any trade or food use, though no detailed trend data is available in the sources at hand.
