It belongs to Cobitis, the genus that anchors the family Cobitidae — a mostly temperate-to-subtropical Eurasian group named for the erectile suborbital spine tucked beneath each eye. Its species name, "short-bodied," points to the trait that sets it apart from its closest relative, C. microcephala: females top out at a modest 2.5 in standard length, small even by the standards of a genus built from slender, sand-loving fish. Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis brachysoma was described by Chen & Chen in 2018 in the journal Zoological Systematics, as one of two new Cobitis species erected in that paper. It is a member of the family Cobitidae — the true or spined loaches — within the genus Cobitis, the Eurasian type genus for the whole family. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, lists it as a currently valid species; the World Register of Marine Species independently confirms the name and authorship.

The authors distinguished it from its closest relative, C. microcephala, using a combination of body shape, colour pattern, the shape of the lamina circularis (an internal skeletal structure used to sex and identify Cobitis species), the mental lobes on the lower lip, the suborbital spine, subdorsal scale counts and caudal-peduncle proportions. As a 2018 description, it has not accumulated synonyms or a history of generic reshuffling the way many older loach names have; it remains simply Cobitis brachysoma.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Cobitis brachysoma is an elongate, laterally compressed bottom-dweller with a small, blunt-snouted head. It carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family Cobitidae its common name of "spined loaches" — a small, sharp, hinged spine folded into a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out for defence. Its skin bears the tiny, deeply embedded scales typical of the genus, which functionally leaves it near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to harsh water conditions and medication.

The species is notably small even within Cobitis: the type description records a maximum of about 2.5 in standard length in females, distinguishing it from the larger-bodied C. microcephala it most closely resembles. Anyone attempting it would be working from genus-level inference rather than a documented protocol for this species.

Because its close relatives in the genus are gregarious, small shoaling fish, it should be kept in a group rather than alone, though the precise minimum group size has not been established for this species. Water should lean cooler and well-oxygenated rather than warm-tropical, consistent with its South China, subtropical origin — a planted, unheated to lightly heated setup is a more defensible starting point than a heated tropical community tank, pending direct evidence otherwise.
