John McClelland described Cobitis chlorosoma in 1839 from specimens taken in Upper Assam, noting a fish "light green, clouded with a darker green, caudal and dorsal marked with spots in transverse rows." At the time nearly every small Asian loach with a slender body was swept into the broad genus Cobitis, a catch-all that nineteenth-century taxonomy has since had to unpick species by species.
Subsequent revision placed McClelland's Assam fish in the synonymy of Paracanthocobitis botia (Hamilton, 1822) — a species also known in the literature and hobby as Acanthocobitis botia and Nemacheilus botia, and in the trade as the zipper loach or mottled loach. Feeding
