Cobitis choii was described by Kim & Son in 1984 from the Korean Peninsula. Like much of the old Cobitis/Misgurnus/Niwaella complex of East Asian spined loaches, the species has been affected by ongoing taxonomic revision: it is also referred to in the literature as Iksookimia choii, reflecting a proposed reclassification into the East Asian genus Iksookimia that some authors apply to this species and its relatives. The species sits in the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, distinguishing it from the unrelated hillstream loaches (Balitoridae) and the botiid loaches (Botiidae) more familiar to aquarists. Its common names — Choi's spiny loach and Miho spine loach — reference both its describers and the Korean river system it is tied to.
Morphology
Cobitis choii is a small, slender, sand-coloured loach, elongate and only weakly compressed, reaching a modest maximum length of around 3.5 in total length. Like all members of Cobitidae it carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile, forked suborbital spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye, which the fish can flick out when handled or threatened.
The skin is covered in minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally naked and, as in other spined loaches, highly sensitive to skin damage and to medications. Body patterning in Cobitis typically runs to mottled or blotched brown-and-tan camouflage suited to a sand-and-gravel streambed, though detailed pattern description for this species is sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
This is a coldwater-to-subtropical species, not a tropical one. Cobitis choii is endemic to the southern Korean Peninsula, known specifically from the Geum (Geumgang) River basin, with an additional, unverified report from the Amur basin in Russia. Mating
Detailed courtship and pairing behaviour for Cobitis choii has not been documented in the sources available here.
