Cobitis crassicauda is a small, slender-bodied spined loach described in 2013 from the Xin River (River Xinjiang), a tributary of the Yangtze system in Jiangxi Province, China. It is one of three new Cobitis species split out of River Pearl basin drainages in the same paper, and it belongs to a genus of true, temperate spined loaches — a group of cold-tolerant, sand-sifting bottom-dwellers that stands apart from the warm-water botiids more familiar in the aquarium trade. Like every member of Cobitidae it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its name, and its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to salt and medication. It is not a fish of the aquarium trade — the little that is known about it comes from its original description and from the general habits of its temperate Cobitis relatives — but it is a useful example of how many East Asian spined loaches remain narrow-range endemics known mainly from taxonomic literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis crassicauda was described by Chen and Chen in 2013 in Folia Zoologica, in a paper naming three new Cobitis species from tributaries of the River Pearl basin in southern China. The type locality is the River Xinjiang (Xin River) at Yujiang County, Jiangxi Province — part of the Yangtze drainage rather than the Pearl River proper, reflecting how closely the two basins' loach faunas are studied together in that literature. The species epithet, crassicauda, is Latin for "thick-tailed," chosen by the authors to contrast this species' short, thick caudal peduncle with the slender caudal peduncle of the closely related Cobitis stenocauda, described in the same paper.

The genus Cobitis is the nominal genus of the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here for valid names — currently lists Cobitis crassicauda as a valid species. East Asian Cobitis taxonomy has been heavily revised over the past two decades as cryptic, narrow-range river endemics like this one have been split out of older, broadly-defined species; C. crassicauda is a comparatively recent addition to that still-growing list.

Morphology

As a member of Cobitis, this is a true loach in the strict sense: an elongate, laterally compressed, sand-coloured fish with a row of dark blotches along the flank and the erectile suborbital spine that names the family Cobitidae, folded into a groove beneath each eye and flicked out defensively or when handled. The type series shows a modest adult size, with males measured at 2.5 in standard length and females somewhat larger at 3 in standard length — a small fish even by loach standards.

The species is distinguished from its close relative Cobitis stenocauda chiefly by its proportions: crassicauda has a noticeably shorter, thicker caudal peduncle, the feature its name describes. Males show sexual dimorphism typical of the genus, developing an elongated lamina circularis — a bony plate-like structure on the second branched ray of the pectoral fin — that is used to distinguish the sexes and is a diagnostic feature within Cobitis more broadly. Like other spined loaches its scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin effectively naked and, as in all Cobitidae, sensitive to handling and treatment.

Habitat

Cobitis crassicauda is known from the Xin River (River Xinjiang) and its tributaries in Jiangxi Province, part of the Yangtze basin in south-central China. These are fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams running over gravel and rock substrates typical of the hill-country tributaries feeding the middle Yangtze system, rather than slow lowland channels.

The Jiangxi region sits in a subtropical climate zone, with a warm annual mean, but its rivers run considerably cooler than that average implies — winter temperatures in the tributary streams drop well below the summer mean, and the smaller headwater streams stay cooler than the main river. Cobitis as a genus is temperate and coldwater rather than tropical: related, better-studied species such as C. taenia and C. splendens require cool conditions, generally in the range of 57–64 °F, and there is no indication that C. crassicauda departs from this pattern. This species should be treated as a temperate, cool-subtropical fish, not a warm tropical one.

Feeding

No feeding study exists for Cobitis crassicauda specifically, but its biology follows the well-established pattern for the genus: a benthic, sand-sifting omnivore that forages over a soft substrate for small invertebrates — worm, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs — along with detritus. Cobitis species root through fine sand and gravel with their sensitive barbels, taking food items sifted from the bottom rather than hunting in open water.

Data is sparse on the exact prey composition for this species, but there is no reason to expect it differs meaningfully from its widely-studied Cobitis relatives. A soft, fine substrate is essential to how these fish feed in the wild, and any care setting attempting to replicate its needs would have to provide the same.

Mating

No spawning behaviour has been documented for Cobitis crassicauda; the species is known essentially only from its original taxonomic description. Males can be distinguished from females by the elongated lamina circularis on the second pectoral-fin ray, a genus-typical sexual character, and by females' generally larger body size, as reflected in the size difference recorded in the type series (males 2.5 in SL vs. females 3 in SL).

Across Cobitis generally, spawning is seasonal, typically in spring, with adhesive eggs scattered among aquatic plants and no parental care. There is no direct observation confirming that pattern for C. crassicauda, but nothing in its taxonomy or habitat suggests it would differ from the genus norm.

Breeding

Cobitis crassicauda has not been bred, or even observed breeding, in any documented setting — it is not present in the aquarium trade and the literature on it is limited to its 2013 description. What can be said comes from the genus: spined loaches of Cobitis scatter adhesive eggs among plants, typically in spring, with no parental care of eggs or fry. Several temperate Cobitis species, along with the related dojo or weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned in captivity by specialists working with cold-tolerant fish, while the tropical members of Cobitidae — Acantopsis, Lepidocephalichthys — generally have not.

Given that C. crassicauda is an obscure, narrow-range river endemic with no trade presence, the honest position is that it has never been bred outside its native river, and there is no aquarium-breeding record to draw on. Any keeper attempting it would be working from the general Cobitis pattern rather than any species-specific account.

In the aquarium

Cobitis crassicauda is not a fish of the aquarium hobby — it has no established trade presence, and this entry exists to document the species rather than to recommend keeping it. Its known biology points squarely to a cool, well-oxygenated, sand-bottomed setup rather than a standard tropical tank: as a temperate Jiangxi stream species related to cold-tolerant Cobitis relatives that need roughly 57–64 °F, it would need cool water and strong flow, not a heated community aquarium.

If it were ever kept, the standard cautions for true loaches would apply. Cobitidae are near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment would need to be approached cautiously and at reduced strength. A soft sand substrate is essential for natural sifting behaviour, and given its small recorded size — under 3 in standard length even for the larger females in the type series — it would suit a modestly sized, unheated or lightly cooled setup rather than a large tank.

Conservation

Cobitis crassicauda has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a status that has not actually been determined. No dedicated conservation study is available for this species.

As a species known only from the Xin River and its tributaries in Jiangxi Province — a narrow range within the Yangtze basin — it fits the pattern of many recently described East Asian Cobitis: a small-range stream endemic that has likely never been assessed simply because it is little-studied outside the taxonomic literature that named it. Such narrow-range river endemics are inherently vulnerable to habitat pressures like damming, pollution and sand extraction common across Yangtze tributary systems, even though no data exists to confirm a population trend for this particular species. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in Cobitis crassicauda.
