Cobitis damlae is a true cave fish, described in 2014 from a single karstic drainage in western Turkey and one of only a handful of loaches known to live underground. It is a small, blind, unpigmented spined loach — a troglomorphic relative of the familiar temperate Cobitis species that live openly in rivers and ditches across Eurasia — collected from surface water near the Dalaman Stream after heavy rain, which washed it out of the cave system it is presumed to inhabit. Almost nothing about its life in the field has been observed directly: no aquarium trade exists for it, its diet and breeding have never been documented, and it is not evaluated on the IUCN Red List. What is known comes from a single holotype and its original description, which is the honest state of the record for this species.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis damlae was described in 2014 by the Turkish ichthyologists Fahrettin Erk'akan and Naciye Özdemir in the Hacettepe Journal of Biology and Chemistry, under the striking title "the first new cave fish species... from Turkey." It is placed in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches — alongside dozens of other small, superficially eel-like loaches distributed across Europe, the Caucasus, Anatolia and temperate Asia.

The species epithet honours the Dalaman drainage itself: "damlae" derives from the Turkish damla, meaning drop or drip, an allusion to the dripping water of the karstic cave system from which the fish is presumed to originate. As with much of the Cobitoidea, generic boundaries in this group have been reshuffled repeatedly by molecular work over the past two decades, but the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid names — currently retains this species in Cobitis, and that combination is used here.

Morphology

This is a small loach, reaching only about 2.5 in in standard length in the type material — among the smallest species in its genus — with a body that is fully scaled but shows the classic hallmarks of a cave specialist: vestigial eyes and a complete absence of pigmentation, leaving the fish pale and effectively blind. Like other members of the family Cobitidae, it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the spined loaches their name, a small defensive blade folded into a groove beneath the eye.

The mouth is distinctly arched and surrounded by three pairs of short barbels, used to feel and taste its way across the substrate in the dark rather than relying on sight. Fin-ray counts recorded from the holotype are modest and typical for the genus — roughly 6–7 branched dorsal rays, 6 pectoral, 5 pelvic, 5 anal and 8+8 caudal rays. The combination of blind eyes, unpigmented but fully scaled skin and small size is what marks this fish out as troglomorphic — anatomically adapted to permanent life in darkness — rather than simply a pale population of a surface species.

Habitat

Cobitis damlae is known only from the Dalaman river drainage in Burdur Province, western Turkey, part of the Aegean Sea basin. The holotype was collected from surface water on the Dalaman Stream itself, but the fish's troglomorphic anatomy — blind eyes and no pigment — strongly implies it does not normally live in open daylight water at all; the specimen is thought to have been flushed out of an associated cave system by heavy rain. Two karst caves in the same karstic plain, roughly 19 mi to the north, are named in the original description as likely parts of its subterranean range.

This places the species firmly in the temperate/coldwater bracket that covers most of the genus Cobitis, in keeping with its Anatolian, Mediterranean-basin range — a world away from the warm tropical rivers of Southeast Asian loaches. Water chemistry and temperature in the cave system itself have not been measured or published; what can be said with confidence is that this is groundwater-fed karst habitat, not a warm lowland river, and any presumed conditions should be treated as inference rather than fact.

Feeding

No dietary study of Cobitis damlae has been published, and the species' subterranean habits make direct observation very difficult. By analogy with its surface-dwelling Cobitis relatives — and with the sand-sifting habits typical of the family Cobitidae generally — it is reasonable to infer a benthic omnivore that forages over silt or sand for worms, small invertebrates and organic detritus, guided by its barbels rather than sight. That inference should be read as informed speculation, not documented fact.

Cave ecosystems are typically food-poor, running on whatever organic material washes in from outside rather than on primary production, so a cave loach's actual diet may be considerably narrower or more opportunistic than that of its river-dwelling cousins. Until further specimens or field studies are available, the honest position is that this species' diet is unknown.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Cobitis damlae — the species is known from a single holotype, and no population has been studied alive in the field or in captivity. There is no described sexual dimorphism, no observed pairing behaviour, and no data on when or how reproduction takes place within the cave system it presumably inhabits.

What can be said is inference from its temperate relatives: most Cobitis species are seasonal spring spawners, and a cave population might be expected to follow some analogous — though currently unknown — reproductive rhythm, possibly cued by seasonal changes in groundwater flow rather than by light or surface temperature, given that darkness removes photoperiod as a cue. This remains speculation; no observation of mating in this species exists in the literature.

Breeding

There is no record of Cobitis damlae ever being bred, in the wild or in captivity — nor could there be, since only a single specimen has ever been documented and the species has no aquarium presence whatsoever. In the broader context of the family, spined and pond loaches (Cobitidae) typically scatter adhesive eggs among plants or gravel in spring, with no parental care afterward, and several temperate species in this group — including other Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers under cool, unheated conditions.

This species is not among them. Its cave-restricted, troglomorphic biology, its apparent rarity even at the type locality, and the complete absence of live material in research or hobby hands mean breeding biology here is a blank page. Any presumed mode — egg-scattering with no parental care, as in its relatives — is extrapolation from the genus, not observation of the species itself.

In the aquarium

Cobitis damlae is not and has never been part of the aquarium trade, and there is no realistic prospect that it will become so: cave fish endemic to a single, poorly accessed karst system are exceptionally difficult and ethically fraught to collect, and its documented population consists of one specimen. This article exists to record what science knows about the species, not as a care guide.

For context, its temperate Cobitis relatives that are occasionally kept — unlike the warm-water botiids or hillstream loaches covered elsewhere in this atlas — generally suit cool, unheated water over soft sand, are near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, and do best given a soft, diggable substrate to sift. None of that can be stated as fact for this species specifically; it is offered only as the general profile of the genus it belongs to.

Conservation

Cobitis damlae has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category. Given what is known — a single karstic drainage in Burdur Province, a single documented specimen, and a troglomorphic biology that implies a small, isolated, groundwater-dependent population — it is a strong candidate for concern under any future assessment, even though no formal status yet exists to say so.

Cave and karst ecosystems of this kind are vulnerable to groundwater extraction, agricultural runoff and pollution of the aquifer, and to disturbance from cave tourism or exploration, any of which could affect a population that may already be extremely restricted in range and numbers. There is no aquarium trade pressure on this species. The responsible position, in the absence of a real assessment, is to flag it as a likely priority for future survey and evaluation rather than to assign it a status the data do not support.
