Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis derzhavini was described in 2020 by Vasil'eva, Solovyeva, Levin & Vasil'ev in the Journal of Ichthyology, from material collected in the lower Kura River drainage of the Ganja-Qazakh region, Azerbaijan. It is karyotypically distinct from its congeners, with a chromosome complement of 8 metacentric and 12 submetacentric elements documented in the original description, and it was separated from its closest relative, Cobitis saniae — with which it occurs sympatrically in the Agstafa River — partly on the absence of a dark spot at the uppermost base of the caudal fin. A subsequent craniological study (summarized on ResearchGate) confirmed morphological divergence between the two species and the close genetic relationship between them, treating them as a pair of recently diverged Caucasian spined loaches.
The species belongs to the genus Cobitis and the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches — the family that gives its name to the erectile suborbital spine found across the group. It carries no synonyms or prior combinations; as a 2020 description it has not been swept up in any of the generic reshuffling that has affected older Cobitoidea genera. The World Register of Marine Species lists Vasil'eva et al. 2020 as the accepted authorship, and the Catalog of Fishes is the reference to consult for any future taxonomic change.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis derzhavini carries the family's signature feature: an erectile spine, folded into a groove beneath each eye, that the fish can flick out defensively when handled or threatened. Like its relatives it has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of Cobitis, with tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a detail that matters for husbandry and medication far more than for looks. The original description distinguishes it from its closest relative, C. saniae, primarily by the absence of a dark spot at the upper base of the caudal fin, alongside the karyotypic differences (8 metacentric + 12 submetacentric chromosomes) that first flagged it as a separate species rather than a population of C. saniae.
Detailed measurements, colour pattern and fin-ray counts beyond the diagnostic features used to separate it from C. saniae are not covered in the available literature; this is a recently described, narrow-range species whose morphology has been documented primarily for taxonomic diagnosis rather than for a full descriptive account of size, coloration and proportions. Data here should be treated as sparse until a fuller redescription or field guide account becomes available.
Habitat
Cobitis derzhavini is endemic to the lower Kura River drainage in the Ganja-Qazakh region of Azerbaijan, in the South Caucasus, where it is known to occur alongside its close relative C. saniae in the Agstafa River, a Kura tributary. This places it squarely within the temperate freshwater fauna of the Caucasus, a region with cold winters and warm but not tropical summers, and consistent with every other species in the genus Cobitis, which is exclusively European and northern Asian and includes no tropical members.
Congeneric spined loaches such as Cobitis taenia are documented favouring muddy to still water with a soft substrate they can bury into, at optimal temperatures around 57–64 °F — a useful proxy given that no aquarium-specific habitat data exists yet for C. derzhavini itself. Its native range is entirely within the Kura basin of Azerbaijan; there is no record of it, or any Cobitis species, occurring naturally outside Eurasia.
Feeding
No feeding studies specific to Cobitis derzhavini have been published. Based on the well-documented ecology of the genus, it is reasonable to expect a benthic, sand-sifting omnivore in the mould of its relatives — a nocturnal forager that sifts through soft substrate for small invertebrates such as worms, insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, along with some detritus. This sand-sifting habit is a genus-wide trait among Cobitis species and is the basis for treating this fish, provisionally, the same way.
In the absence of direct observation, any aquarium feeding regime would need to follow the genus pattern: sinking foods offered after dark to match a nocturnal, bottom-dwelling forager, over a substrate soft enough to sift through naturally. This is inference from congener biology rather than a documented account of C. derzhavini itself, and should be treated accordingly.
Mating
No mating or courtship behaviour has been recorded for Cobitis derzhavini; the species is known to science almost entirely from taxonomic material used for its 2020 description. What can be said comes from the genus: spined loaches in Cobitis are egg-scatterers, and several temperate congeners spawn seasonally, generally in spring, releasing adhesive eggs rather than engaging in extended pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour.
Given the complete absence of field or aquarium observation for this specific species, any account of its mating behaviour would be speculation dressed as fact. The honest position is that its reproductive behaviour has not yet been documented.
Breeding
There is no confirmed record of Cobitis derzhavini being bred in captivity, in a pond, or observed spawning in the wild — it is a 2020 description with no aquarium history to draw on. Extrapolating from its genus is nonetheless informative: Cobitidae as a family are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and several temperate species within Cobitis, along with the pond/dojo genus Misgurnus, have been successfully pond- or tank-spawned by producing adhesive eggs scattered among plants, typically in spring as water temperatures rise. The tropical members of the wider family — Acantopsis, Lepidocephalichthys — generally have not been bred this way, but C. derzhavini sits within the temperate side of that divide.
The honest summary for this species specifically is that breeding has not been documented at all — not in the wild, not in captivity. If it follows its genus, egg-scattering among plants with no parental care is the expected mode, but this remains inference rather than an observed fact, and anyone attempting it would be working from congener biology alone.
In the aquarium
Cobitis derzhavini has no aquarium-keeping history recorded in the available literature — it is not a species that has entered the hobby. Any care guidance has to be drawn from its genus and from the temperate ecology its Caucasus habitat implies. As a coldwater Cobitis, it would need an unheated or cool setup rather than a tropical tank, echoing the optimal 57–64 °F documented for the well-studied congener Cobitis taenia, with a soft, sand-based substrate it can bury into and plenty of cover.
Like other true loaches it is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, a genus-wide trait worth respecting even in the absence of species-specific data. Given that this fish is not established in the trade, is a narrow-range endemic, and has no documented husbandry record, the responsible position for a keeper or retailer is to treat any claimed stock with real caution and to recognise that specimen care here is extrapolated from relatives, not proven.
Conservation
