Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis dolichorhynchus was described by the American ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols in 1918. It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the "typical spiny loaches" of the family Cobitidae — the spined & pond loaches — a large Eurasian genus whose members are notoriously difficult to tell apart on colour pattern alone, relying instead on fine details of snout shape, lamina circularis and body markings. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here, maintains the species in Cobitis.
The specific epithet dolichorhynchus derives from the Greek dolichos, "long," and rhynchos, "snout," almost certainly referring to the fish's proportionally elongated snout relative to its river-system relatives. As with many East Asian Cobitis, the group has seen repeated taxonomic revision as researchers work through the genus's many superficially similar, geographically restricted species; C. dolichorhynchus is one of several loaches recognised as distinct within the Tiaoxi river system rather than lumped into a single wide-ranging species.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis dolichorhynchus carries the family's diagnostic feature: a small, erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out defensively. The body is elongate and only lightly armoured — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked and, as in all loaches, sensitive to handling and to medication.
The species is set apart from its river-mates chiefly by its long snout, the feature immortalised in its name, along with proportional differences in body and fin measurements that separate it from the co-occurring C. sinensis and C. laterimaculata. Habitat
This is a narrow-range endemic of the River East Tiaoxi system in Zhejiang Province, eastern China, recorded from multiple survey sites in the river's middle reaches. It lives alongside several other Cobitoidea in the same drainage, each occupying overlapping but distinct stretches of the river.
Cobitis is a temperate, coldwater genus, and there is nothing in the available sources to suggest this species is an exception — it inhabits slow-flowing to still freshwater over fine sandy substrate, the classic Cobitis setting, rather than warm tropical rivers. This is a cool, seasonal river environment, not a heated tropical stream, and any husbandry should start from that premise.
Feeding

Should it ever appear, the genus-level guidance is the safest starting point: Cobitis are coldwater fish that do best unheated or lightly heated, not in a warm tropical community, with a fine soft sand substrate essential for natural feeding.
As with all loaches, the near-scaleless skin makes Cobitis sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given the total absence of husbandry data for this specific species, anyone attempting to keep it would be working from genus-level inference rather than established practice.
