Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis dorademiri was described in 2017 by the Turkish ichthyologists Fuat Erk'akan, Uğur Özdemir and Esra Özeren, part of a wave of narrowly-endemic Cobitis species split out of Türkiye's fragmented karst drainages over the past two decades. The holotype (catalogued HUIC-AKDY1) was collected on 6 October 2011 from the Balıklı Stream in the Köyceğiz Basin, Muğla Province, in the country's southwestern Mediterranean corner.
The genus Cobitis is the type genus of family Cobitidae, the spined loaches, and remains one of the most actively revised groups in Eurasian ichthyology — many superficially similar stream populations across Anatolia and the Balkans have turned out, on closer study, to be distinct micro-endemic species rather than one widespread one. Cobitis dorademiri was distinguished from its relatives chiefly by pigment-pattern details (the Gambetta zone system used to tell Cobitis species apart) and body proportions: it lacks a fifth Gambetta zone, its second zone is reduced to a few spots behind the dorsal fin, it has a comparatively short and deep caudal peduncle, and it shows more than one spot at the base of the caudal fin. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination Cobitis dorademiri; no synonymy or genus change is in play here.
Morphology
This is a true loach of family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches — built on the same basic plan as its relatives: an elongate, laterally compressed body suited to a life spent low in the water column or buried in sediment, with barbels around a small, downward-facing mouth for sensing and sifting food out of the substrate. As in all Cobitis it carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the family, a small forked spine folded into a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out defensively; it is worth handling the fish carefully in a net for that reason.
Cobitis dorademiri is a temperate species, not a tropical one — this matters for anyone considering it, since the genus overall belongs to cool, running Eurasian streams rather than warm aquaria. No maximum length or detailed colour-pattern description has surfaced in the sources reviewed here beyond the diagnostic pigment-zone characters used to separate it from congeners; like other spined loaches it is presumed near-scaleless or fine-scaled, which carries the same medication sensitivity seen across the genus, though this has not been specifically documented for dorademiri. Size and full external description should be treated as data sparse until a dedicated account is published.
Habitat
Cobitis dorademiri is a micro-endemic, known only from the Köyceğiz Basin and the lower Dalaman River system in Muğla Province, southwestern Türkiye — a small corner of the eastern Mediterranean basin. The type locality, Balıklı Stream, is a spring-fed tributary typical of the karst drainages that riddle this part of Anatolia, where isolated basins have allowed many narrowly local fish species to evolve in near-total geographic isolation from one another.
As a Cobitis, it is presumed to occupy the same kind of habitat as its temperate relatives: slow-to-moderate flowing water over sand, silt or fine gravel, where it can bury itself for cover and to avoid predators, surfacing to forage. No published habitat description specific to this species beyond its basin of origin was found in the sources reviewed; its restriction to a single small drainage system is itself the defining habitat fact.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to Cobitis dorademiri was located, but the genus Cobitis is uniformly a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. Wild Cobitis take small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, copepods, chydorid crustaceans — and detritus sifted from a soft substrate bed, using the barbels around the mouth to locate food before taking mouthfuls of sand and expelling the inedible fraction through the gills.
A soft sand or fine-silt substrate is therefore essential to let this kind of loach feed the way it evolved to; a hard or coarse-gravel bottom denies it its natural foraging method entirely, regardless of what food is offered in the water column.
Mating
Nothing specific to Cobitis dorademiri's reproductive behaviour or seasonal timing has been published in the sources available. What can be said comes from the genus at large: Cobitis species are seasonal spring spawners, with reproduction cued by rising temperatures and day length as the coldwater season ends. No sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species specifically; other Cobitis show subtle differences such as a more pointed pectoral fin in males, but this has not been confirmed for dorademiri.
Breeding
Cobitis dorademiri has, as far as the available sources show, never been bred or even kept in the aquarium hobby — this is a species known essentially only from its original scientific description and a handful of distribution surveys. What follows is genus-level inference, not a record for this species. Spined loaches of genus Cobitis are egg-scatterers with no parental care: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among aquatic plants, typically in spring, and take no further part in rearing. Several other temperate Cobitis, along with relatives such as Sabanejewia and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned in captivity by specialists working with cool, unheated water — a genuinely different picture from the tropical Cobitidae (the horseface loach Acantopsis, the genus Lepidocephalichthys), which are rarely if ever bred at home.
There is no record found of Cobitis dorademiri being captive-bred, and given its status as a recently-described micro-endemic with essentially no aquarium presence, it should be assumed unbred in the hobby. Anyone encountering this species should treat it as a conservation-sensitive wild population, not as breeding stock.
In the aquarium
Cobitis dorademiri is not a hobby fish in any meaningful sense — it does not appear to be traded, and the responsible position is that it should stay that way given its extremely restricted native range. The notes here are offered only as a genus-level guide to what a Cobitis of this kind would need if it were ever encountered in a research or conservation context, not as a shopping recommendation.
Following the pattern of its temperate relatives, this is a coldwater fish: it belongs in an unheated tank or outdoor pond reflecting the cool, running water of its native Anatolian streams, not a heated tropical setup. It would need a soft sand substrate to sift and bury in, since a bare or coarse-gravel bottom prevents this kind of loach from feeding or behaving naturally. As with other scaleless or fine-scaled Cobitidae, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications would be prudent, though this has not been specifically tested for dorademiri. Given how little is documented, anyone who does encounter this species should treat it as a scientifically and conservation-significant population rather than an ordinary aquarium subject.
Conservation
Cobitis dorademiri has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated (NE); no numerical status or year should be inferred beyond that. This is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2017 — many newly described Cobitidae, especially narrow Turkish basin endemics, remain formally unassessed even though their restricted ranges would likely warrant scrutiny if evaluated.
What is clear from the distribution literature is that this is a micro-endemic confined to a single small drainage system — the Köyceğiz Basin and lower Dalaman River in Muğla Province — the kind of narrow karst-basin endemism that characterises much of Türkiye's freshwater fish fauna. Species restricted to one drainage are inherently vulnerable to local pressures such as water abstraction, pollution or habitat alteration, even absent a formal assessment. There is no evidence in the sources reviewed of any aquarium trade in this species, and none should be encouraged given its conservation profile.
