Cobitis emrei was formally described in 2018 by Jörg Freyhof, Fahrettin Küçük and Matthias Geiger as part of a major revision of Middle Eastern spined loaches published in the journal Zootaxa, a single paper that erected eight new Cobitis species from the region. It is distinguished from its relatives by a combination of characters including a single lamina circularis in males, a large black spot at the upper base of the caudal fin, and a fine, sand-like pattern of very small spots covering the mid-lateral zone of the body.
The genus Cobitis sits within the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, a largely Eurasian group unified by an erectile spine housed in a groove beneath the eye. The species epithet honours Yunus Emre, the 13th–14th century Turkish folk poet and Sufi mystic — a naming choice reflecting the fish's discovery within Turkey rather than any physical trait. As a species named in 2018, it has not accumulated synonyms or a history of generic reshuffling the way many older Cobitoidea have; the combination Cobitis emrei is the only one it has held.
Morphology
Cobitis emrei is a true loach in every sense: an elongate, laterally compressed, sand-coloured fish carrying the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family Cobitidae its common name of spined loaches. Like its relatives it is functionally scaleless to the touch — its scales are minute and deeply embedded — which makes the skin far more permeable to medications than that of a scaled fish.
