Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis erkakanae was formally described in 2018 by Jörg Freyhof, Fahri Bayçelebi and Matthias Geiger, in a Zootaxa monograph reviewing the genus Cobitis across the Middle East and describing eight new species from the region in a single paper. It belongs to the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches — the group that also contains the pond and dojo loaches of the genus Misgurnus and the closely related genus Sabanejewia.
The species epithet honours Füsun Erk'akan of Hacettepe University in Ankara, recognising her contributions to documenting the diversity of Turkish Cobitis. As with many of the Middle Eastern Cobitis described in the same review, C. erkakanae was split out of what had previously been treated as a single widespread species or lumped with regional relatives; the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, currently recognises it as a distinct species within Cobitis. No earlier combination or synonym is in wide use for this fish.
Morphology
Cobitis erkakanae is a true loach in the strict sense: family Cobitidae, carrying the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its common name of spined loaches. The spine sits folded in a groove beneath the eye and can be flicked out defensively, a trait shared across the family from the tiny Cobitis to the much larger botiids.
The original description notes several diagnostic details separating it from its congeners: males possess two laminae circularis (a bony structure on the pectoral fin used to distinguish Cobitis species), no dark blotches appear below the Z4 body zone, and the blotches present in the Z2 and Z4 zones are horizontally elongated and often fused into bars rather than sitting as isolated spots. The caudal fin carries four to six wide, regularly spaced brown bands. Like other Cobitis it is a slender, elongated, laterally flattened fish with a near-scaleless body — the skin is thin and the scales are tiny and deeply embedded, a feature that matters far more for husbandry and medication sensitivity than for outward appearance.
Habitat
This species is a Turkish endemic, known from the Gölbasi Lakes and the Ceyhan River drainage of southern Turkey — the type locality given in the original description. It has not been recorded outside this drainage system, consistent with the fine-grained, drainage-by-drainage endemism typical of Cobitis across Anatolia and the wider Middle East, where the genus has repeatedly proven to be a complex of many local, restricted-range species rather than a few widespread ones.
Cobitis erkakanae is a coldwater species, not a tropical one. Its relatives in the genus, including the well-studied European spined loach Cobitis taenia, live in cool, well-oxygenated streams and lake margins over sand and fine gravel, where they spend much of the day buried or resting on the bottom and become active at dusk to sift the substrate for food. There is no indication in the available sources that this species departs from that temperate, sand-bottomed lake-and-river habit.
Feeding
No feeding-specific study of Cobitis erkakanae has been located, but the genus is consistent enough in its habits that the pattern can be stated with confidence. Cobitis species are benthic, nocturnal sand-sifters: they take worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and organic detritus picked and sifted from a soft substrate, foraging mostly after dark and resting buried or hidden by day.
A soft sand or fine-gravel bed is not decorative for this genus, it is a feeding requirement — a spined loach kept over coarse gravel or bare glass cannot forage the way it would in the wild, and condition suffers accordingly. Any aquarium approach to this species would need to follow the same rule established for its better-known relatives: sinking foods offered in low light, over a substrate the fish can actually sift.
Mating
No spawning behaviour has been documented for Cobitis erkakanae specifically; nothing in the cited sources describes courtship, timing or site selection for this species. What is known comes by extension from the genus. Cobitis species typically spawn in spring as water temperatures rise, scattering adhesive eggs among aquatic plants or fine root systems rather than pairing up or building any structure.
External sexual dimorphism in the genus is generally subtle — a plumper body in ripe females and, in some species, small differences in fin shape or the pectoral-fin lamina structure used taxonomically — but no dimorphism has been specifically reported for this species, and data sparse should be assumed until a direct study is published.
Breeding
Cobitis erkakanae has not been bred, or reported bred, in the aquarium. As a spined and pond loach it is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — eggs are broadcast adhesively among plants and left to develop unattended, in contrast to the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups. This is the honest picture across most of Cobitidae: several temperate species in the family, notably some populations of Cobitis and the pond and dojo loaches of Misgurnus, have been spawned in ponds or coldwater tanks by hobbyists and researchers, while the tropical members of the family such as the horseface loach Acantopsis and the genus Lepidocephalichthys generally have not.
Cobitis erkakanae falls on the temperate side of that divide, so a seasonal cool-to-warm cycle mimicking a Turkish spring would be the logical approach if breeding were ever attempted, but no such attempt is documented. For now, this is a species known from taxonomic collections and museum material rather than aquarium stock, and it should be treated as essentially unbred in captivity.
In the aquarium
Cobitis erkakanae is not established in the aquarium trade; there is no evidence in the available sources of it being kept, sold or bred by hobbyists. Anything said here is inference from its genus and its coldwater, sand-dwelling habit, not a documented care record for this species — data sparse is the honest position.
Were it ever kept, the general Cobitis template would apply: an unheated or lightly cooled aquarium rather than a tropical setup, a soft sand substrate deep enough to sift and burrow in, and gentle handling given its near-scaleless skin. Like other scaleless loaches, spined loaches are sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so any medicating would call for reduced doses and close observation. As a small, endemic, poorly known species from a single Turkish drainage, it is best regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than a fish to plan a tank around.
Conservation
Cobitis erkakanae has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Described only in 2018 and known from a restricted range centred on the Gölbasi Lakes and Ceyhan River drainage, it fits the pattern of many recently split Cobitis in the Middle East: narrow-range endemics that have not yet received a formal extinction-risk assessment.
No population trend, threat assessment or trade pressure has been documented for this species in the available sources. Restricted-range freshwater endemics in Anatolia are frequently exposed to pressures such as water abstraction, damming and pollution affecting lakes and drainages more broadly, but no such finding has been specifically published for Cobitis erkakanae, and none is asserted here.
