Cobitis erythropterus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868. It sits in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches — within the larger loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Cobitis has been repeatedly revised as taxonomists have split the old, broadly-defined Cobitis taenia complex and related Eurasian spined loaches into narrower species and, in some cases, new genera such as Sabanejewia.
