Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis evreni was formally described in 2008 by Erk'akan, Özeren & Nalbant, placing it in the genus Cobitis within the family Cobitidae, the spined loaches. The genus is large and taxonomically active — the Cobitis/Sabanejewia group of Eurasian spined loaches has been repeatedly revised as researchers work through a complex of similar-looking species — but Cobitis evreni has stood as a distinct, valid species since its description, and the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, retains it in Cobitis.
The species is distinguished from other members of the Bicanestrinia subgenus group by the absence of a black spot at the base of the caudal fin, a reduced third Gambetta zone, and the absence of a fifth Gambetta zone — the pigment-pattern features ichthyologists use to separate Cobitis species that otherwise look very alike. The specific epithet honours Evren Erk'akan, son of the Turkish ichthyologist Füsun Erk'akan, one of the describing authors.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Cobitis evreni is a small, elongated, laterally compressed loach with the erectile suborbital spine that defines the family Cobitidae — a sharp spine held folded in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out defensively. It reaches a modest maximum length of about 4.5 in standard length, in keeping with the generally small size of the spined loach genus.
The skin, as in all true loaches, is effectively naked — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded rather than forming an overlapping covering — which leaves the fish more exposed to water quality and medication than a typically scaled fish. Detailed pattern and colour description for this species is sparse in the available sources, but the genus as a whole shows the blotched, barred body pattern typical of Cobitis, used partly to distinguish related species from one another.
Habitat
Cobitis evreni is endemic to a single watercourse: Kömür Stream near Göksun, in the Ceyhan River basin of southeast Turkey. It is a benthopelagic fish of temperate freshwater, living on or near the stream bed rather than in open water. Its entire known range is this one stream system, making it one of the more range-restricted members of an already narrowly-distributed genus.
This is a coldwater, temperate species, not a tropical one — it belongs to the same climatic group as the European and Anatolian spined loaches that tolerate, and require, cool running water rather than the warm conditions suited to tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach. An unheated aquarium or a cool, well-oxygenated stream-fed system is the appropriate analogue to its native habitat, not a heated tropical tank.
Feeding
As a member of the spined loach genus, Cobitis evreni is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore. It forages over and within soft substrate for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and detritus, the classic diet of the Cobitis group. A soft, sand-based bed is important for this kind of feeding behaviour, letting the fish root and sift rather than simply picking food off a hard surface.
No species-specific feeding data has been recorded for Cobitis evreni beyond what is known for the genus, but there is no reason to expect it differs meaningfully from its close relatives: a bottom-foraging omnivore that thrives on a varied diet of small live and sinking foods taken from a soft substrate.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning observations have been published for Cobitis evreni; its reproductive biology is inferred from the well-studied genus. In related Cobitis species, spawning occurs in spring, typically April to June in temperate latitudes, timed to seasonal warming of cool streams. Males wrap around females to induce egg release, a behaviour documented in the related Cobitis taenia, and dense vegetation is chosen as the substrate for oviposition.
Given the coldwater, stream-endemic nature of this species, any natural spawning would be expected to follow the same temperate, spring-triggered pattern seen across the genus rather than anything resembling a tropical fish's year-round or rain-triggered cycle.
Breeding
Cobitis evreni is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, in keeping with the genus Cobitis as a whole: ripe fish release adhesive eggs onto plants, stones or gravel, and the eggs are left to develop unguarded. In the related Cobitis taenia, spawning is fractional — eggs are released in numerous batches over an extended period rather than all at once — and requires cool water, roughly 57–64 °F, to proceed successfully in captivity.
There is no record of Cobitis evreni being bred in the aquarium. As a narrowly endemic, Endangered coldwater species it is not established in the hobby, and any breeding attempt would need to replicate the cool temperatures and spring cue that trigger spawning in its temperate relatives — a different requirement entirely from the tropical Cobitidae, which are rarely if ever spawned at home.
In the aquarium
Cobitis evreni is not a hobby fish in any meaningful sense: it is a narrow-range endemic, legally significant as an Endangered species, and there is no established aquarium trade or care literature specific to it. Any discussion of its husbandry must be inferred from the genus, with the caveat that keeping or collecting this species would raise conservation concerns given its single-stream distribution.
Were it ever kept, the guiding principles for Cobitis as a genus would apply: a cool, unheated setup rather than a tropical one, a soft sand substrate that allows natural sifting behaviour, and caution with medications given the near-scaleless skin shared by all true loaches, which absorbs treatments readily and makes copper and full-strength doses risky. As with all spined loaches, water quality and gentle, gradual treatment matter more than they would for a scaled fish.
Conservation
Cobitis evreni is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered (EN), an assessment dated 24 January 2013. This status reflects the species' extreme range restriction: it is known only from Kömür Stream near Göksun in the Ceyhan basin of southeast Turkey, a single watercourse where any localised habitat degradation, water abstraction or pollution event could threaten the entire population.
This pattern is common among the region's spined loaches — many Anatolian and eastern Mediterranean Cobitis species are narrow-range stream endemics, and several are considered threatened for exactly this reason. There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in Cobitis evreni; its conservation risk comes from habitat pressure on its single home stream, not from collection for the hobby.
