Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis gladkovi was described by Vasil'ev and Vasil'eva in 2008 as part of a broader karyological study of Cobitis and Misgurnus species from Russian river systems. It was elevated to species rank from Cobitis melanoleuca gladkovi, a subspecies of the Siberian spined loach, after chromosome-level (karyotype) evidence supported treating the Seversky Donets population as a distinct lineage rather than a local form of C. melanoleuca. It belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true spined and pond loaches — and the genus Cobitis, which the Catalog of Fishes recognizes as the authority for valid names in this speciose and taxonomically active group.
The type locality is the Seversky Donets River basin, part of the Ponto-Caspian drainage system. As with much of Cobitis, the genus has a long history of species being split, lumped and re-described as chromosome and genetic tools improve on the old approach of sorting spined loaches by colour pattern alone; C. gladkovi is a product of that more recent, karyology-driven era of Cobitis taxonomy.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis gladkovi carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine folded into a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out when threatened or handled.
