Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis guttata was described by Nguyen in 2005 from Vietnam, one of a wave of new Cobitis species named from Indochina in the early 2000s as the region's stream fauna was surveyed more closely. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, a large Eurasian group that also contains the coldwater European spined loaches (Cobitis taenia and relatives), the genus Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus.
The species' taxonomic standing is unsettled: FishBase lists it as incertae sedis within Cobitidae, meaning its placement is uncertain pending further study, and some sources suggest it may now be treated under the segregate genus Microcobitis. The original 2005 description drew on a limited set of diagnostic characters, and loach taxonomy across Vietnam and southern China remains undersampled, with cryptic diversity likely still to be resolved. For now this profile keeps the combination Cobitis guttata, the name under which it was described and is still most widely recorded.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis guttata carries the family's diagnostic feature: a small, sharp, erectile spine folded into a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out when handled or threatened. Its skin is effectively naked to the touch, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales — a trait shared across the genus and one that matters greatly for how the fish should be medicated.
The species name guttata, Latin for "spotted" or "speckled," refers to the rows of dark spots or blotches running along the back and sides of the body, a pattern typical of many Cobitis species and presumably the fish's most distinctive external feature. Beyond this, detailed morphological data — precise body proportions, fin ray counts, maximum recorded length — has not been documented in the sources available for this profile; no adult size figure could be confirmed.
Habitat
Cobitis guttata is known only from Vietnam, placing it among the tropical Asian members of a genus whose better-studied species are largely temperate Eurasian. Its precise river system, elevation and substrate preferences have not been documented in the available sources, though as a Cobitis it almost certainly occupies flowing or slow-moving fresh water over a soft, sandy or fine-gravel bed, in keeping with the sand-sifting habit typical of the genus.
Given its tropical Vietnamese distribution, this species is very likely a warm-water fish rather than a coldwater one like the European spined loach Cobitis taenia, which favours 57–64 °F streams. No aquarium-relevant water chemistry data — pH, hardness, specific temperature range — has been recorded for C. guttata specifically, so any figures given here should be read as informed inference from the genus rather than confirmed fact for this species.
Feeding
Cobitis guttata is presumed to be a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, in line with every well-studied member of its genus: burrowing into soft substrate and sifting it for small invertebrates such as worm and insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and organic detritus, with a trophic level (around 3.2, per FishBase) consistent with a mixed diet leaning toward small animal prey rather than plant matter.
No species-specific feeding observations — wild or captive — have been documented for C. guttata. A soft substrate that allows natural sifting behaviour would be expected to matter for this species as it does for its relatives, but this is inference from the genus rather than a confirmed finding.
Mating

There is no reason to expect this species is any exception, and it should be treated, honestly, as essentially unbred in captivity.
In the aquarium
Cobitis guttata is not an established aquarium species — it is not known to be regularly kept, traded or bred by hobbyists, and no care reports have been documented. Any tank recommendations here can only be extrapolated cautiously from its genus: a soft, sandy substrate for natural sifting behaviour, subdued or diffuse lighting, and cover from driftwood, leaf litter or fine-leaved plants would suit a Cobitis of this kind, along with clean, well-oxygenated water.
As with every member of Cobitidae, this species is expected to be near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments — a point worth remembering for any keeper who might encounter it, even though the species itself has no documented aquarium history. Given the total absence of confirmed size, temperature or behavioural data, prospective keepers should treat this as an unknown quantity rather than rely on assumptions drawn from its relatives.
Conservation
Cobitis guttata is listed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, assessed on 27 October 2011 — reflecting how little is known about its population size, trend, precise range or the threats it faces, rather than any evidence that it is currently secure or declining.
It is known only from Vietnam, and Vietnamese freshwater habitats broadly face pressures from damming, sand extraction, pollution and agricultural runoff, but no threat assessment specific to this species has been documented. Given the taxonomic uncertainty around the species (incertae sedis within Cobitidae, with the possibility of resolution into a different genus), a Data Deficient rating with essentially no aquarium trade recorded is the most honest picture available.
