Cobitis hereromacula is a small, freshly-described spined loach known only from the Luohe River in Guangdong Province, southern China. Named for its irregular speckled markings, it belongs to the same temperate Eurasian lineage as the spined loaches and the dojo — a genus of slender, sand-loving bottom fish that carries an erectile spine below the eye and, in most of its range, needs no heater at all. It has barely reached the aquarium trade and is best understood as a river endemic first and an aquarium fish a distant second.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis hereromacula was described in 2016 by Chen, Sui, Liang & Chen in the Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, alongside a second new Cobitis species, from material collected in the Luohe River, a tributary system in Guangdong Province, southern China. It sits in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined loaches — and its placement there has not been revised since description.

The species epithet hereromacula combines the Greek heteros ("other" or "different") with the Latin macula ("spot"), referring to the irregular, uneven speckling and blotching on the body that distinguishes it from its congeners. Cobitis as a genus has been heavily reshuffled by molecular work over the past two decades, with many East Asian and European lineages split and re-split; C. hereromacula is one of the more recent additions to that already crowded genus, described specifically to separate it from superficially similar southern Chinese spined loaches on the basis of its blotch pattern and pigmentation.

Morphology

As described, Cobitis hereromacula is a small, slender spined loach with an elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the genus — the classic sand-loach shape built for burrowing and hugging the substrate. The original description diagnoses it by its patterning rather than its size: an absence of the pigmentary zones seen in related species, 13 to 16 oval blotches along the dorsal surface, 10 to 13 elongated triangular blotches along the flank underlain by 20 or more fine vertical dark-brown bars, 6 to 7 rows of spots across the caudal fin, and a distinct vertical oval spot at the base of the tail. That dense, irregular speckling is exactly what the name hereromacula points to.

Like other members of Cobitis, it carries the family's signature feature — an erectile, two-pointed suborbital spine tucked in a groove below the eye, used defensively and capable of snagging a net. The genus also runs six barbels around the mouth, used to feel out food in the sand, and the deeply reduced, embedded scales typical of Cobitidae leave the skin functionally naked — a point that matters for handling and medication. Data on this species' exact maximum length has not been located in the sources reviewed; congeners in Cobitis are typically small, well under 6 in.

Habitat

Cobitis hereromacula is known from the Luohe River in Guangdong Province, part of the Pearl River drainage in southern China — a single river system to which the species currently appears to be endemic. Like other Cobitis, it is a bottom-dweller of flowing fresh water, living over sand and fine sediment where its coloration provides camouflage against a mottled streambed.

Cobitis as a genus is temperate to subtropical rather than tropical, and its native range across Eurasia — from Europe through Anatolia and the Caucasus to East Asia — reflects that. Guangdong sits at the warmer, subtropical southern edge of the genus's distribution, so while C. hereromacula is not a coldwater fish in the strict sense of its northern relatives, it is not a warm tropical species either; it belongs to a river system with a distinct seasonal temperature cycle rather than a stable warm tropical stream.

Feeding

Cobitis hereromacula has not been the subject of a dedicated dietary study in the sources reviewed, but its biology follows the well-documented pattern of the genus: a sand-sifting benthic omnivore that forages over and within the substrate for small invertebrates — worm and insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates — along with detritus. The six barbels around its mouth are the primary sensory tool for finding buried prey in low light or turbid water.

In practical terms, this means the species needs a soft sand or fine-gravel bed to feed naturally, sifting it through its mouth and gills rather than picking food off a hard or coarse surface. A loach kept over sharp gravel or bare glass is denied the core foraging behavior the genus is built around.

Mating

No dimorphism or courtship data specific to Cobitis hereromacula were found in the sources reviewed. In the wider genus Cobitis, spawning is a seasonal, temperature-and-photoperiod-triggered event: congeners such as the well-studied European spined loach Cobitis taenia become reproductively active as water temperatures rise past roughly 61–64 °F in spring and day length increases, at which point ripe adults move into shallow, vegetated, flowing water to spawn.

Given that C. hereromacula occupies a subtropical river system with its own seasonal cycle, a broadly similar spring-triggered pattern is plausible by analogy with its genus, but this has not been confirmed for the species itself and should be treated as an inference from Cobitis biology generally, not a documented fact for this fish.

Breeding

Cobitis hereromacula has not been reported bred in the aquarium, and no captive-breeding account was found in the sources reviewed. Its congener Cobitis taenia — a much better-studied spined loach — is a fractional egg-scatterer with no parental care, releasing several thousand small adhesive eggs over a spawning season that can run three to four months, with eggs scattered onto plants and substrate in flowing, vegetated shallows once water temperature and daylength cross a seasonal threshold. Several temperate Cobitidae, including some Cobitis and Sabanejewia species and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned by dedicated keepers under conditions that mimic that spring trigger.

There is no indication in the available sources that Cobitis hereromacula specifically has been spawned in captivity. Given how recently it was described (2016) and its narrow, poorly documented distribution, the honest picture is that this species is essentially unbred in the hobby — any breeding attempt would have to be extrapolated from the general Cobitis pattern of a seasonal, unguarded egg-scatterer rather than from direct data on this fish.

In the aquarium

Cobitis hereromacula is not an established aquarium fish; it has barely, if at all, entered the trade, and this entry should be read as a description of the species and its genus rather than a tested care sheet. Should it appear, the general Cobitis template applies: a soft sand substrate for natural sifting behavior, clean and well-oxygenated water, and a subtropical-to-cool temperature regime rather than a heated tropical one — many members of this genus do not need or want a heater. A shoal of several individuals is preferable to keeping the species alone, following the general loach preference for company.

As with all Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin makes this species — by extension from its genus — likely sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, and spined loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich. Any future keeper should treat cautiously, at reduced doses, and prioritize replicating the flowing, sandy-bottomed river conditions of its native Luohe River over generic community-tank treatment.

Conservation

Cobitis hereromacula has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status here is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than guessed. Described only in 2016 from the Luohe River in Guangdong Province, it appears — on current knowledge — to be restricted to a single river system within the Pearl River drainage, which is the kind of narrow range that typically raises vulnerability to habitat degradation, damming, pollution and water abstraction, all common pressures on rivers in this densely populated part of southern China.

No information on population trend, harvest, or trade pressure was found in the sources reviewed. Given its restricted, single-drainage distribution and recent description, a formal IUCN assessment specific to this species would be valuable; until one exists, its conservation status should be treated as genuinely unknown rather than assumed safe.
