Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis illyrica was formally described by Jörg Freyhof and Alexander Stelbrink in 2007, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 18(3): 269–275, from specimens collected in a small lake south of Lake Prolozac in the Imotsko polje of southern Croatia — the species' type locality and, as far as is currently documented, the core of its entire range. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, and sits in the genus Cobitis alongside the other Balkan and European spined loaches such as Cobitis elongata and the related genus Sabanejewia.
The species epithet illyrica refers to Illyricum, the Roman-era name for the western Balkan region that encompasses its range. Cobitis is a taxonomically active genus — many superficially similar Balkan populations previously lumped under wide-ranging "Cobitis" names have since been split into narrow local endemics as karst-lake and karst-river systems are surveyed more closely, and C. illyrica is a product of that ongoing revision. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current valid combination, Cobitis illyrica Freyhof & Stelbrink, 2007.
Morphology
Cobitis illyrica is a small, slender, cylindrical loach in typical spined-loach proportions, with males reaching about 2 in standard length and females slightly larger at up to about 2.5 in SL. Like every member of the family Cobitidae it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its common name — a small, forked, folding spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out defensively. Its skin is effectively naked, covered only by minute, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most other fish groups.
Fin-ray counts recorded for the species are modest, with 10 dorsal soft rays and 9 anal soft rays, consistent with its Cobitis relatives. This is a temperate, coldwater fish, not a tropical one — an important distinction within the loaches, since several genera covered in this atlas (including the tropical horseface loach Acantopsis) are warm-water fish, while Cobitis, like the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, is built for cooler, seasonal Eurasian waters.
Habitat
This species is a narrow-range endemic of the Adriatic Balkan karst, known from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, centred on the limestone lakes of the Imotsko polje — a karst poljé (a flat-floored basin within limestone terrain) that includes Lake Prolozac and the Matica River drainage. Unlike the flowing-water habits of many Cobitis relatives, C. illyrica has been recorded from still lake water, over mud and fine sediment bottoms, rather than fast rivers or streams.
Karst lake systems of this kind are notoriously fragile: water levels are governed by seasonal rainfall and underground hydrology, and can fluctuate sharply or dry down in drought years, while the lakes themselves are often small and isolated from one another. This is a temperate, coldwater habitat — the Balkan interior experiences cold winters and warm but not tropical summers — and the species' entire known distribution occupies a tiny geographic area, which is the central fact behind its conservation status.
Feeding
Cobitis illyrica is a benthic, sand- and mud-sifting omnivore, in keeping with the feeding style of its Cobitis relatives. Related Balkan Cobitis species studied for feeding ecology take chironomid (midge) larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, along with some plant matter and detritus sifted from the substrate — the classic loach pattern of burrowing into and working through a soft bed to extract food rather than hunting in open water.
No dedicated dietary study of C. illyrica itself has been documented in the sources available here, so this picture is drawn from its close congeners rather than the species directly; the underlying biology — a small benthic invertebrate-and-detritus feeder tied to soft sediment — is consistent across the genus and is the safest working assumption for this species.
Mating
No species-specific spawning observations for Cobitis illyrica are documented in the sources available here. Spined loaches in the genus Cobitis are typically seasonal spring spawners, and as a temperate lake-dwelling species living through cold Balkan winters, C. illyrica almost certainly follows that pattern of a spring reproductive season tied to warming water, though the details have not been formally studied and published for this particular species.
Given the extremely restricted distribution and small population implied by its Endangered listing, direct observation of wild spawning behaviour in C. illyrica is inherently difficult, and no aquarium spawning has been documented either.
Breeding
As with other members of the genus Cobitis, C. illyrica is presumed to be an egg-scattering species with no parental care — adhesive eggs are released among vegetation or over sediment, typically in spring, and the adults take no further part in rearing. Several temperate Cobitis relatives, along with the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers under cool, seasonal conditions, unlike the tropical Cobitidae (the horseface loach Acantopsis and the genus Lepidocephalichthys), which generally have not.
No confirmed captive spawning of Cobitis illyrica specifically has been documented in the sources available here, however, and given its rarity and Endangered status this is not a species that circulates in the aquarium trade to be bred. The honest picture is that this fish has essentially never been bred in captivity — what is known about its reproduction is inferred from its genus, not observed directly in this species.
In the aquarium
Cobitis illyrica is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense — it is a narrow-range conservation subject, not a trade species, and there is no documented hobbyist keeping history for it in the sources available here. Its small adult size (to about 2.5 in) and coldwater biology mean that, in principle, an unheated or lightly cooled aquarium with a soft sand substrate would suit the genus's general needs far better than a warm tropical setup, but this is inference from its Cobitis relatives rather than species-specific guidance.
As with all Cobitidae, any individual encountered would be near-scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally — a caution that applies across the whole family. Given its Endangered status and highly restricted range, this species should not be a target for collection, and there is no ethical trade basis for keeping it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cobitis illyrica as Endangered (EN) as of 7 December 2023. The species is known only from a small cluster of karst lakes in the Imotsko polje of southern Croatia, with its range extending into adjoining Bosnia and Herzegovina, making it a classic narrow-range karst endemic: its entire global population is confined to a habitat type that is inherently limited, hydrologically fragile and vulnerable to drought, water abstraction and habitat modification.
Because the species was only described in 2007, historical population trend data is limited, but the fundamental conservation concern is structural rather than incidental — a species with this small a range and this specific a habitat requirement carries elevated extinction risk almost by definition, independent of any single threat. There is no evidence in the sources available here of trade-driven pressure on this species; the risk is squarely about the loss or degradation of its handful of karst lake habitats.
