Cobitis indus is a small spined loach described in 2022 from the Dalaman River drainage on Turkey's Eastern Aegean coast — the fourth Cobitis species recognised in that single river system. Like its close relatives it is a temperate, sand-sifting bottom-dweller of Eurasian rivers, not a tropical fish, and it carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the whole family Cobitidae. It is so recently described that almost nothing has been published on its aquarium biology; what follows sticks closely to the primary description and to what is well established for the genus as a whole, and says plainly where the record runs out.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis indus was formally described in 2022 by Eagderi, Secer and Freyhof in Zootaxa (5162(4):410–420), based on material from the Dalaman River drainage, which drains into the Eastern Aegean Sea in southwestern Turkey. It is the fourth Cobitis species documented from that single drainage, underlining how finely subdivided the spined-loach fauna of Anatolia has turned out to be as researchers work through it river by river. The genus Cobitis is the type genus of the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.

The species diagnosis rests on a combination of characters: two laminae circularis (a structure on the pectoral fin used to separate Cobitis species), a bifurcate suborbital spine, a notably narrow caudal peduncle, and a distinctive pigmentation pattern — its flank blotch row ("zone 4") carries 17–24 small blotches that fuse into a stripe, and there is a single black comma-shaped spot at the upper base of the caudal fin. Molecular data (mitochondrial COI) place it close to Cobitis dorademiri, with a genetic distance of 2.3–2.7%, consistent with a recently diverged sister-species pair. As with much of the reshuffled Cobitoidea, the Catalog of Fishes is the reference for the current valid combination, and there is no older synonym to flag here — this is a newly erected species, not a renamed one.

Morphology

Cobitis indus is a true loach in every sense that matters: it belongs to family Cobitidae, the spined loaches, and carries the erectile suborbital spine — a small, sharp, hinged spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye — that gives the family its common name. Like other Cobitis it has an elongate, only lightly compressed body, a flattened underside suited to resting on sand, and a slender profile that narrows sharply toward a distinctly thin caudal peduncle, one of the characters used to separate it from its relatives.

Its skin carries the small, deeply embedded scales typical of the genus, which in practice means a fish that is functionally close to scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to harsh medications. Colour pattern in the original description centres on a row of 17–24 small dark blotches along the mid-flank that run together into a broken stripe, and a single comma-shaped black mark at the top of the tail-fin base — features used, alongside the bifurcate suborbital spine and paired laminae circularis, to tell it apart from the very similar, closely related Cobitis dorademiri with which it shares the wider Aegean drainage system. Habitat

The species is known only from the Dalaman River drainage, a system draining to the Eastern Aegean Sea in southwestern Turkey. This places it firmly within the Anatolian freshwater fauna, an area with a long history of fine-scale Cobitis speciation — closely related spined loaches are frequently confined to single river drainages rather than shared across basins, and C. indus fits that pattern as one of four Cobitis species now recognised from the Dalaman system alone.

Cobitis is a temperate Eurasian genus, and the well-studied relative Cobitis taenia lives naturally at water temperatures as low as 57–64 °F in regions with cold winters — genuinely coldwater fish, not tropical ones. Given that C. indus is an Anatolian endemic in the same genus, it should be treated as a temperate species from a flowing river system rather than a warm tropical one; the primary description's own habitat and water-chemistry details sit behind a journal paywall and were not accessible for this profile, so specifics on substrate, flow and exact temperature range are not stated here — data sparse.

Several temperate members of the family — species of Cobitis and Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by keepers and researchers, in contrast to tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not. C. indus, as an Anatolian Cobitis, would be expected to follow the temperate pattern if it were ever kept and spawned, but no record of that having happened exists yet. Cobitis indus is not established in the aquarium hobby — it is a 2022 scientific description of a narrow-range Anatolian river endemic, not a traded fish, and no keeper accounts, care sheets or trade records were found.
