Cobitis joergbohleni is a small, coldwater spined loach known only from a single spring-fed wetland in Central Anatolia — the Sultan Marsh (Sultansazlığı) near Kayseri, Turkey. Described in 2018 by Jörg Freyhof, Baran Bayçelebi and Matthias Geiger as part of a sweeping revision of Middle Eastern Cobitis, it is one of several narrow-range spined loaches that turned out to be hiding under a single old species name across the region. Like its relatives it carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the family Cobitidae, is a sand-sifting bottom forager, and belongs to a genus that is cool-water, not tropical. With a tiny range restricted to one marsh system already under decades of ecological pressure, it is assessed as Critically Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis joergbohleni was described in 2018 by Jörg Freyhof, Baran Bayçelebi and Matthias Geiger, part of a broad review of the genus Cobitis across the Middle East that resolved eight new species out of populations previously lumped under older, wide-ranging names. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, within the genus Cobitis — the temperate Eurasian spined-loach genus that also includes the widespread Cobitis taenia. The species epithet honours the German ichthyologist Jörg Bohlen, a researcher known for his work on loach systematics; the fish is essentially named for a loach scientist by loach scientists.

The Sultan Marsh system in Kayseri Province has proven to be a small hotspot of Cobitis endemism: a closely related species, Cobitis fusunae, was described from the same wetland complex the following year, underscoring how many distinct, narrow-range lineages had been hidden under older regional Cobitis names before this generation of taxonomic revision. As with much of Cobitoidea, the genus-level picture here is settled and current — this is not an old combination in need of correction, but a recently and carefully described species.

Morphology

As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis joergbohleni carries the erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye that gives the spined-loach family its name — a small but sharp defensive structure the fish can flick outward, the same feature found across its relatives from the tiny Sultan Marsh endemics to the familiar dojo loach. Its skin is effectively naked, covered in minute, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fish, which makes the whole family sensitive to poor water quality and to strong medications.

This is a small loach: the type material tops out at 2 in standard length, making it one of the more diminutive members of the genus rather than a large, showy species. Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count data specific to this species beyond the original description are sparse in the sources available here; in general form it follows the elongate, slender-bodied, bottom-hugging build typical of Cobitis.

Habitat

Cobitis joergbohleni is endemic to the Sultan Marsh (Sultansazlığı) wetland complex near Kayseri in Central Anatolia, Turkey, recorded specifically from the Soysallı and Gurba spring systems that feed the marsh. This is a coldwater, spring-fed habitat, not a tropical stream — the genus Cobitis as a whole is a temperate, cool-water group, and its close relative Cobitis taenia is documented living in water around 57–64 °F over sandy or silty bottoms in clear, oxygenated, slow-flowing streams, rivers and vegetated ponds. The same cool-water, spring-influenced profile is the best available picture for this species' natural conditions.

The marsh sits in an inland, high-elevation basin, and like many spring-fed Anatolian wetlands its hydrology has been altered over recent decades — a pattern reflected directly in this species' conservation status. A soft, fine sand or silt substrate is a defining habitat feature for burrowing spined loaches generally, and almost certainly for this species as well.

Feeding

Cobitis joergbohleni is presumed to be a sand-sifting benthic omnivore in the pattern typical of its genus and family: foraging over and within soft substrate for small invertebrates such as worms, insect larvae and small crustaceans, along with organic detritus sifted from the sediment. Species-specific dietary data has not been published for this narrow-range endemic, so this picture is inferred from the well-documented feeding habits of congeners such as Cobitis taenia rather than direct observation.

What is well established across the genus, and worth carrying into any care picture, is the dependence on a soft feeding substrate — spined loaches root and sift rather than picking food from hard surfaces, so a fine sand or silt bed is functionally part of their diet, not just their habitat.

Mating

No species-specific spawning behaviour has been documented for Cobitis joergbohleni; the sources available here are silent on courtship and site selection for this particular fish. What can be said comes from the genus: temperate Cobitis species typically spawn in spring as water temperatures rise, scattering adhesive eggs among aquatic vegetation with no pairing behaviour or nest-building beyond that.

Given this species' extremely restricted range in a single spring-fed marsh, its reproduction is presumably tied closely to the stable, cool, spring-influenced conditions of that system — the kind of narrow ecological dependency that makes habitat alteration especially dangerous for range-restricted spring endemics.

Breeding

Cobitis joergbohleni has not been bred in the aquarium, and no husbandry or captive-spawning records exist for this species. The wider picture for spined and pond loaches is instructive here: several temperate members of Cobitidae — congeners within Cobitis and Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, typically scattering adhesive eggs among plants in spring as temperatures climb, with no parental care afterward. Tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys, by contrast, are generally not bred at home.

Cobitis joergbohleni sits on the temperate side of that divide by genus, which in principle makes seasonal pond- or aquarium-spawning plausible, but as an unstudied, Critically Endangered single-locality endemic it is not in aquarium culture and should not be presumed available or appropriate for the trade. Any conservation value of captive propagation for this species would depend on a dedicated, permitted breeding programme working with wild broodstock from the Sultan Marsh, not casual hobby keeping.

In the aquarium

Cobitis joergbohleni is not established in the aquarium hobby and there are no husbandry records to draw on for this specific fish; nothing here should be read as an endorsement of collecting or keeping it. What generalises safely from its genus and family is worth noting for context: spined loaches are near-scaleless and medication-sensitive like other Cobitidae, so any captive care would call for gentle, half-strength treatments rather than full doses; they need a soft sand or silt substrate to express natural sifting and burrowing behaviour; and — being from a genus with several coldwater representatives — this species would need cool, well-oxygenated water rather than a standard tropical setup.

Given its Critically Endangered status and single-locality endemism, the appropriate posture toward this fish is conservation interest rather than acquisition. It is not, and should not become, an aquarium-trade species; its long-term survival depends on protecting the Sultan Marsh spring system it is confined to.

Conservation

Cobitis joergbohleni is assessed by conservation researchers as Critically Endangered, reflecting its extremely restricted range — it is known only from the Sultan Marsh (Sultansazlığı) spring system near Kayseri, Turkey — and a documented decline in its population over the past four decades driven by ecological changes to that habitat. A published assessment specifically proposing its IUCN Red List category exists in the scientific literature, though the species does not yet appear to carry a formal, dated IUCN Red List entry in the sources reviewed here.

The Sultan Marsh basin has undergone substantial hydrological alteration in recent decades — drainage, water abstraction and habitat modification pressures common to Anatolian spring wetlands — and these changes are the specific threat identified for this species rather than any generic regional decline. Because it shares its tiny range with the similarly narrow-range Cobitis fusunae, the entire spring system functions as a single point of failure for more than one endemic species, making habitat protection at the Sultan Marsh the central conservation question for this fish.
