Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis kellei was described in 1998 by Erk'akan, Atalay-Ekmekçi and Nalbant, part of a wave of species-level splitting within the genus Cobitis that separated Anatolia's many local spined loach populations from one another and from their European relatives. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, and the genus remains Cobitis in the current Catalog of Fishes treatment.
The species is endemic to a single Turkish drainage, the Göksu stream, which gives it its common name. Like many of the region's short-range Cobitis, it was named for a narrow window of collecting rather than any wide distribution, and its taxonomic story is really the story of one known population from one known stretch of water.
Morphology
This is a small, slender loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built from small fish. Like other true loaches in the family Cobitidae, it carries the erectile suborbital spine, a small, sharp, hinged spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out for defence, and its skin is effectively naked, covered only in tiny embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fish.
Males of the genus Cobitis typically show a thickened second pectoral-fin ray with a bony lamina circularis, a diagnostic feature used to sex and identify species in the group, and Cobitis kellei is described with this same trait. Overall body form follows the familiar Cobitis pattern: an elongated, laterally compressed body suited to sand-sifting and streambed-hugging rather than open-water swimming.
Habitat
Cobitis kellei is known only from the Göksu stream in the upper Tigris drainage of southern Turkey, a temperate river system far from the warm lowland rivers that many tropical loaches call home. As with other Cobitis, it is a benthic, freshwater species associated with clean, flowing streams over sand or fine gravel substrate, where it can bury and sift for food.
This is a coldwater, temperate species, not a tropical one — it comes from an Anatolian stream system subject to a proper seasonal cycle, and any surviving population would be adapted to cool, well-oxygenated running water rather than a warm, still aquarium. No population has been confirmed since a single collection in 1974, and the IUCN now lists the species as Extinct — its former habitat in the Göksu stream is presumed to no longer support it.
Feeding
As with other members of the genus, Cobitis kellei is presumed to be a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, taking small invertebrates such as worms, insect larvae and tiny crustaceans along with detritus sifted from the streambed. This is inferred from the well-documented feeding ecology of the genus Cobitis generally rather than from direct observation of this particular species, since so little fieldwork exists on it.
A soft, sand or fine-gravel substrate is central to how these fish feed in the wild, letting them bury partway and work grains through their gills and mouth to extract food — the same substrate need that would apply to any captive individual, were the species ever available to keepers.
Mating
Specific courtship and pairing behaviour has not been documented for Cobitis kellei, and given how rarely the species has been seen at all, there is no field or aquarium account to draw on. What is known comes from the wider genus: Cobitis species typically pair up for spawning in spring, triggered by rising temperatures after a cold winter, with males using the specialised pectoral-fin ray to clasp the female during the spawning act.
For a temperate stream endemic like this one, any breeding cycle would be expected to follow that same cold-to-warm seasonal pattern rather than the flood-triggered spawning migrations seen in tropical botiid loaches.
Breeding
No breeding of Cobitis kellei in captivity has been documented — unsurprising for a species now considered extinct, with no confirmed sighting since a single collection in 1974. Drawing on the genus, Cobitis species typically scatter adhesive eggs among plants or fine substrate in spring, with no parental care given afterward. Several temperate members of the family Cobitidae — Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers under cool-water conditions, unlike the tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not.
Were Cobitis kellei ever to be kept and conditioned, the honest expectation, based on its temperate relatives, would be egg-scattering among plant mats in a cool, seasonally-cycled setup with no parental care — but this remains speculative extrapolation from the genus, not an observed fact for the species itself.
In the aquarium
Cobitis kellei is not established, and very likely not available, in the aquarium hobby. It has not been confirmed in the wild since 1974 and there is no record of it entering the ornamental trade, so there is no first-hand care information to offer. Any discussion of husbandry has to be inferred from its temperate Cobitis relatives.
Were a hobbyist ever to encounter genuine stock of a similar temperate spined loach, the general Cobitis template applies: a cool or unheated setup rather than a tropical one, a soft sand substrate for natural sifting behaviour, and gentle handling and low-strength medication given the family's near-scaleless, med-sensitive skin. For this particular species — now considered extinct by the IUCN — the honest position is that it is not a fish anyone could ever keep.
Conservation
The IUCN now lists Cobitis kellei as Extinct. Despite being formally described in 1998, the only confirmed record of the species dates to a single collection made in 1974 in its lone known locality, the Göksu stream; decades of subsequent surveys failed to find it, and the IUCN's current assessment confirms what earlier sources had already suspected.
As an endemic of a single small Anatolian stream, Cobitis kellei would have been acutely vulnerable to any of the pressures common to the region's freshwater systems — water abstraction, damming, pollution or habitat alteration — any one of which could plausibly have eliminated a population confined to one short stretch of water, though the exact cause of its disappearance was never documented. There is no evidence the aquarium trade played any role in its decline; this is a conservation story about a vanishing habitat, not a collected species.
