Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis lebedevi was described by Vasil'eva & Vasil'ev in 1985, placed in the genus Cobitis within the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches. It was described from the Amur River basin of the Russian Far East, part of a wave of Cobitis species described from East Asian drainages through the late twentieth century as ichthyologists worked to untangle a genus that had long been treated too broadly.
A later taxonomic revision — Bogutskaya et al. (2008), in a paper redescribing Cobitis lutheri and describing Cobitis nalbanti — placed Cobitis lebedevi in synonymy with Cobitis choii Kim & Son, 1984. That means most current treatments recognize the population under the name Cobitis choii rather than as a distinct species, and Cobitis lebedevi is preserved here as an older, still-used name for a fish drawn from the same Amur-basin lineage rather than as a name being actively corrected. The genus Cobitis itself has been repeatedly reshuffled by molecular and morphological revision work across Eurasia, and East Asian material in particular remains an active area of taxonomic study.
Morphology
Cobitis lebedevi is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach typical of the genus — a slim, almost eel-like body built for sliding through sand rather than swimming in open water. Like other true loaches it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family Cobitidae its common name of "spined loaches": a small, sharp, forked spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out when handled or threatened.
The skin is effectively naked — Cobitis species carry only small, deeply embedded scales — which makes the fish sensitive to rough handling, poor water quality and full-strength medication, a trait shared across the family. Coloration in Cobitis typically runs to a pale to sandy ground colour broken by a row of dark blotches or a mottled pattern along the flanks, a camouflage suited to a sand-bed life; specific pattern detail for this species is not well documented in available sources, so it should not be assumed to match any particular sister species.
Habitat
This is a cold temperate species of the Amur River drainage, spanning the Russian Far East and northeastern China, with a further population recorded from the Kherlen River in Mongolia — a river system that itself drains toward the Amur basin. This places Cobitis lebedevi firmly in continental East Asia's cold-winter river systems, not in the warm tropical rivers that many other loach genera inhabit.
As with other Cobitis, it is a benthic species associated with soft, sandy or fine-gravel substrate in flowing water, where it spends much of its time buried or partly buried, sifting sediment for food. Winters in the Amur basin are severe and summers are warm, so the species experiences a wide natural seasonal temperature swing rather than the stable warmth of a tropical river.
Feeding
Cobitis lebedevi is a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, foraging over and within the substrate for small invertebrates. Work on the genus Cobitis more broadly documents a diet of mosquito larvae, bloodworm, Tubifex worms and other small aquatic invertebrates, taken as the fish sieves sediment through its mouth and gills and expels the inedible fraction — the same sifting strategy used across the spined loaches.
A soft, fine substrate is essential to this feeding method: a Cobitis kept over gravel or bare glass cannot forage naturally and will struggle to find food even when it is offered. In captivity this genus takes sinking foods readily, including bloodworm, Tubifex and prepared sinking tablets, so long as they reach the bottom where the fish can find them.
Mating
No specific courtship or spawning description for Cobitis lebedevi was found in available sources. In the wider genus Cobitis, spawning is a springtime event tied to rising water temperatures, with adults scattering adhesive eggs among plants or fine root systems in shallow water rather than pairing off or defending a site. There is no evidence of pair-bonding, courtship display or nest-building in this genus.

As a member of the temperate Cobitidae, Cobitis lebedevi would be expected to follow the pattern documented for other Cobitis and for the closely related dojo/weather loach Misgurnus: adhesive eggs scattered among plants in spring, with no parental care afterward. Several temperate spined and pond loaches — including various Cobitis and Sabanejewia species and Misgurnus — have been spawned in ponds or unheated tanks by hobbyists and researchers working with cold-tolerant fish, unlike the tropical Cobitidae genera (Acantopsis, Lepidocephalichthys), which are rarely if ever bred at home.
No confirmed spawning record for Cobitis lebedevi itself was found in the cached sources, and given the sparse literature on this specific name — reinforced by its status as a likely synonym of Cobitis choii — it is honest to say that captive breeding of this particular population is undocumented rather than to assume it follows every detail of its better-known relatives.

Cobitis lebedevi is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby; no husbandry accounts, size records from captivity, or trade history were found in the cached sources. What can be said with confidence follows from its genus and its cold temperate range: this is a coldwater fish suited to an unheated tank or pond rather than a warm tropical setup, and — like its Cobitis relatives — it would need a soft, sand or fine-gravel substrate to forage naturally and would be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments on account of its near-scaleless skin.
Given the lack of documented care information, data sparse is the honest summary; a keeper encountering this name should treat it primarily as a taxonomic curiosity — a synonym-entangled Amur-basin population — rather than an established aquarium fish, and defer to care information published for Cobitis choii, the name under which the population is now usually recognized.
Conservation
Cobitis lebedevi is recorded on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. Its native range spans the Amur River drainage of Russia and China and the Kherlen River of Mongolia — a broad continental distribution across three countries — which is consistent with a species not currently considered at elevated risk.
Because the name is treated by at least one taxonomic revision (Bogutskaya et al., 2008) as a synonym of Cobitis choii, conservation assessment and monitoring for this lineage may in practice be tracked under that name in some literature. No aquarium-trade pressure on this species was found in available sources; its conservation picture, so far as documented, is tied to the general condition of its Amur-basin and Mongolian river habitats rather than to collection for the hobby.
