Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis maroccana was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1929, placed from the outset in the genus Cobitis — the type genus of the family Cobitidae and the group after which the "spined loaches" are named. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, continues to list it as Cobitis maroccana in the family Cobitidae, and there is no indication in the available sources of it having been shuffled into a different genus, unlike many of the tropical Asian loach lineages that have been split repeatedly in recent decades.
It belongs to a cluster of small, similar-looking Cobitis species distributed around the Mediterranean basin and the Maghreb, several of which were historically confused with one another or lumped under broader European names. As with other spined loaches, identification within the genus often rests on fine details of colour pattern, scale counts and the shape of the suborbital spine rather than anything obvious to a casual observer.
Morphology
This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach, reaching a maximum of about 3 in in total length — modest even by the standards of the spined loaches. As a true member of Cobitidae it carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out defensively when handled or threatened. Like other cobitids its scales are minute and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked — a trait that matters directly for how the fish should be treated with medications.
Detailed published description of the species' colour pattern and fin morphology is limited in the sources reviewed here, but the genus as a whole shares a slender, faintly mottled or barred body built for lying flat against sand and gravel, with a small underslung mouth and short barbels suited to picking through the substrate rather than the more elongated, spade-like snout seen in some tropical relatives.
Habitat
Cobitis maroccana is endemic to northern Morocco, known from the Loukkos and Sebou river drainages, where it occurs in both highland and lowland watercourses. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic in temperate fresh water with little current — the kind of quiet, sand- or silt-bottomed stream reach and backwater favoured by spined loaches generally, rather than fast, turbulent flow.
This is a temperate, coolwater fish, not a tropical one. Its congener Cobitis taenia, the widespread European spined loach, thrives at roughly 57–64 °F in cool European streams, and the genus Cobitis as a whole is built around that temperate ecology; C. maroccana, despite its North African range, sits within the same coolwater mould rather than the warm tropical waters associated with many Southeast Asian loaches. In the aquarium this points toward an unheated or lightly heated setup over a soft sand or fine gravel bed, not a heated tropical community tank.
Feeding
Cobitis maroccana is a benthic sand-sifting omnivore, consistent with the feeding habits documented across the genus Cobitis. It forages over and within soft substrate for small invertebrates — worm and insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — sifting sand and silt through its gills as it feeds, and FishBase places the species at a trophic level of 3.2, characteristic of a secondary consumer rather than a specialised predator or grazer.
No species-specific aquarium feeding record is available in the sources reviewed, but a diet modelled on its temperate relatives would include sinking foods that reach the substrate: bloodworm, blackworm, small crustaceans and sinking prepared foods. Cobitis maroccana is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, in keeping with the genus Cobitis as a whole: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among plants or fine substrate, typically as water warms in spring, and the eggs and fry are left to develop unguarded. Several temperate members of the family Cobitidae — including congeners in Cobitis and Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been spawned in ponds or coolwater tanks by dedicated keepers, unlike the tropical Cobitidae (such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys), which are generally not bred at home.
For Cobitis maroccana specifically, there is no confirmed record in the available sources of the species being spawned in captivity. It is essentially unknown in the hobby, and its breeding biology in an aquarium setting should be considered untested rather than established — a keeper attempting it would be working from the general pattern of temperate Cobitis rather than any documented account of this species.

Cobitis maroccana is not a fish encountered in the aquarium trade in any meaningful way; the notes here describe how it would need to be kept rather than how it commonly is. As a small, temperate spined loach it wants cool, unheated to lightly heated water rather than a warm tropical setup, over a soft sand or fine gravel substrate deep enough to let it burrow and sift, since coarse or sharp substrate will injure a fish built for soft ground. Given its modest 3 in size, a modestly sized aquarium can house it, but as with all Cobitidae it should not be kept alone — loaches in this family generally do best in a group of their own kind.
Like all true loaches it is essentially scaleless, which makes it highly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength doses of many standard treatments; any medication should be approached cautiously and at reduced dose. Its natural habitat in slow-flowing, sand-bottomed Moroccan streams should be echoed with gentle flow, subdued lighting and cover, and — because this is a species that occurs nowhere else in the world — any specimen in the hobby should be treated as an animal worth particular care rather than a routine community fish.
Conservation
Cobitis maroccana is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, an assessment dated May 17, 2021. This reflects a species that, while narrowly endemic to the Loukkos and Sebou drainages of northern Morocco, is not currently considered at elevated extinction risk. FishBase nonetheless flags pollution and habitat destruction as ongoing threats within its restricted North African range, and as a short-lived species with a medium resilience and a population doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years, local declines from water-quality pressure or habitat loss remain a real concern even under a Least Concern listing.
The species is not part of the aquarium trade in any documented way, so trade pressure is not a relevant factor in its conservation picture; its future depends instead on the condition of the specific Moroccan river systems it calls home.
