Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis microcephala was described by Chen & Chen in 2011 in Folia Zoologica, alongside a second new cobitid species, from material collected in the River Nanliu drainage of Guangxi Province, China. The holotype is a male of 2.5 in total length (2 in standard length) taken from the type locality in Bobai County on the River Nanliu.
It sits in the genus Cobitis, family Cobitidae — the spined loaches proper, the group that gives the wider superfamily Cobitoidea its common thread of an erectile suborbital spine. Cobitis is a large genus of roughly a hundred recognized species spread across temperate Europe and temperate-to-subtropical Asia, and is taxonomically active, with species boundaries within the genus still being revised. There is no older or synonymous combination in circulation for this species; it has carried the name Cobitis microcephala since its 2011 description, and the Catalog of Fishes is the reference to check for any future changes.
Morphology
As its genus name signals, Cobitis microcephala is a true, erect-spined loach: a slender, elongate, laterally compressed body built for hugging and sifting a soft riverbed, with a groove beneath each eye housing a small erectile spine that the fish can flick out in self-defence. The skin carries the family's characteristic near-absent, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally naked and, as in all Cobitidae, sensitive to anything applied to the water.
The original description distinguishes it from its close relatives by a set of fine anatomical details: small, irregular dark spots scattered along the flanks, a slender, finely serrated lamina circularis (a bony structure near the base of the pectoral fin used in loach taxonomy, with 16–18 serrations in this species), and a distinctive jet-black spot at the upper base of the caudal fin. The type male measured 2.5 in TL (2 in SL); FishBase records a maximum length of about 2.5 in standard length, reached by females. This is a small fish even by loach standards.
Habitat
Cobitis microcephala is known only from the River Nanliu and River Beiliu, a tributary of the Pearl River basin in Guangxi Province, southern China — a narrow, single-drainage endemic. The type locality lies in Bobai County on the River Nanliu, at roughly 22°28'N, 109°95'E.
Cobitis as a genus is temperate-to-subtropical rather than tropical, and Guangxi's rivers sit in that subtropical band, with water conditions likely varying substantially across the year rather than holding to a constant warm tropical range. No published temperature or water-chemistry data specific to this species has been located; treat any numbers as inferred from the genus and region rather than measured for this fish specifically.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Cobitis microcephala specifically. Going by the feeding biology shared across Cobitidae, it is almost certainly a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, working over a soft riverbed for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus rather than hunting in open water or browsing plants.
In practical terms this means the species — like its relatives — would depend on a soft substrate to forage naturally; a bare or coarse-gravel bottom would deny it the sifting behaviour that defines how spined loaches feed.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Cobitis microcephala; the species is known essentially from its type series and the original taxonomic description, with no follow-up biological or aquarium literature located. Sexual differences beyond the type material are not established in the available sources.
What can be said comes from the broader genus: Cobitis species typically pair or group-spawn by scattering eggs rather than through any prolonged courtship display, with reproduction in temperate members of the genus often tied to a seasonal, spring warming cue rather than occurring year-round.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Cobitis microcephala. Spined loaches in this genus are egg-scatterers with no parental care, typically releasing adhesive eggs among plants, generally in spring. Several temperate Cobitis species, along with the related Sabanejewia and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers elsewhere in their ranges, but no such record exists for this species.
Given how recently it was described (2011), how narrow its known range is, and the complete absence of aquarium-trade or captive-breeding literature, the honest picture is that Cobitis microcephala has never been bred, or even kept, in an aquarium as far as published sources show. Any breeding parameters would have to be extrapolated from congeners rather than known for the species itself.
In the aquarium
Cobitis microcephala is not established in the aquarium hobby. It carries no common name in the trade, is not listed by hobbyist reference sites, and the only substantive information available on it is the 2011 taxonomic description and its subsequent IUCN assessment. There is nothing to report on tank size, tankmates, or husbandry specific to this fish.
What can be said with confidence, again by extension from its family and genus, is that any future keeper should expect a small (around 2.5 in), scaleless, sand-sifting loach that — like its relatives — would be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, and would need a soft substrate to express normal feeding behaviour. Water conditions should follow the cooler, more seasonal profile typical of subtropical Chinese rivers rather than a warm, stable tropical setup, though this is inference from the genus and region, not measured data for the species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cobitis microcephala as Data Deficient (DD) on 26 September 2023. This reflects how little is known about the species beyond its original description — population size, trend, and specific threats have not been documented in the assessment.
As a single-drainage endemic restricted to the River Nanliu and River Beiliu in Guangxi, the species would be inherently vulnerable to any degradation of that specific river system — damming, pollution, or habitat alteration — but no documented threat assessment or trend data exists to confirm current pressures. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species; it is not known to be collected or exported.
