Cobitis nalbanti is a small, coldwater spined loach described in 2016 from the Han and Geum river systems of central South Korea, where it had long been overlooked and misidentified as the similar Cobitis lutheri. Like the rest of its genus it is a temperate, sand-sifting fish of Eurasian rivers, not a tropical species — it carries the erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin that mark the family Cobitidae, and it wants cool, unheated water rather than a warm community tank. It has no formal IUCN assessment, and almost nothing has been published about its behaviour in captivity, so this account leans heavily on the original description and on what is well established for its close relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis nalbanti was formally described in 2016 by Vasil'eva, Kim, Vasil'ev, Ko and Won in the journal Zootaxa, as one of three new Cobitis species split out of material that had previously been identified as Cobitis lutheri in Korean rivers. Molecular and morphological work distinguished it from its similar-looking relatives, and preliminary phylogenetic evidence suggests populations in the Mangyeong River, south of the Geum, and in smaller rivers between the Han and Geum systems are conspecific with it, extending its known range slightly beyond the two main type rivers.

It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the spined loaches proper, within the family Cobitidae — the group that gives the whole loach superfamily its old alternative name. Cobitis is a large, taxonomically active genus of temperate Eurasian loaches, and the Catalog of Fishes is the reference for its current, frequently revised species list; C. nalbanti is a recent, well-defined addition to it rather than a name in flux.

Morphology

Cobitis nalbanti is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach in the classic spined-loach mould. The original description notes a wide, ovoid lamina circularis (a diagnostic scale structure used to separate Cobitis species), rounded scales with a large focal zone, and a relatively long, protruding snout. The suborbital spine — the small, erectile spine beneath the eye that gives the family Cobitidae its name — is present but does not reach the centre of the eye when folded back, a detail used to tell it apart from close relatives. The mandibular barbel is short, not reaching the front edge of the eye.

Colour pattern includes 12–14 dark brown blotches along the flank and a single black spot at the upper base of the caudal fin, set against a pale ground colour typical of the genus. Like other Cobitis it is essentially scaleless to casual inspection — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded — which matters for how it should be handled and medicated. The species has been karyotyped, with a chromosome count of 2n = 48–51 and NF = 66, variation consistent with the complex, sometimes polyploid genetics known across the genus Cobitis.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the central Korean Peninsula, known from the Han and Geum river systems, which drain west into the Yellow Sea, with likely additional populations in the Mangyeong River and smaller drainages between the Han and Geum. It is a freshwater river fish of temperate East Asia, living over sand and fine sediment in flowing water rather than still ponds.

As with other members of the genus, it is a coldwater, temperate species — the rivers it inhabits experience a full seasonal cycle including cold winters, unlike the warm, stable rivers of tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis. Nothing in the available sources suggests brackish tolerance or any habitat beyond flowing, temperate freshwater streams and rivers of the Yellow Sea drainage.

Feeding

No feeding data specific to Cobitis nalbanti has been published, but the genus is uniformly a sand-sifting benthic omnivore, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. Wild Cobitis forage by working through soft sediment for small invertebrates — worm, insect larvae and tiny crustaceans — along with detritus, sifting the substrate rather than hunting in open water.

In captivity, congeners take sinking foods readily: prepared pellets and wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia, and live foods, always presented at or below the sand where the fish naturally forages. A soft, fine substrate is important not just for comfort but for allowing this feeding behaviour to happen at all.

Mating

Nothing specific has been published on the reproductive behaviour of Cobitis nalbanti, and no external sexual dimorphism is documented for it in the available sources. Across the genus Cobitis, females are typically somewhat deeper-bodied than males when in spawning condition, and males in several species show enlarged pectoral fins or a thickened second pectoral ray, but these details have not been confirmed for this particular species.

Spined loaches in general spawn in spring as water temperatures rise, scattering adhesive eggs among submerged plants or fine root systems rather than forming pairs or defending territory. Given its temperate Korean range, C. nalbanti most plausibly follows this same seasonal, plant-associated spawning pattern, but this is inferred from the genus rather than documented for the species itself.

Breeding

Cobitis nalbanti has not been reported as bred in the aquarium hobby, and given how recently it was described (2016) and how little attention it has received outside taxonomic literature, that is unsurprising. The genus as a whole is an egg-scattering group with no parental care: ripe fish release adhesive eggs among plants, typically in spring, and take no further part in rearing.

Several temperate Cobitis relatives, along with the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus, have been spawned in ponds or unheated tanks by hobbyists and researchers working with cool, seasonally-cycled water — this is a realistic route for the genus generally. Tropical Cobitidae such as Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys, by contrast, are essentially never bred at home. There is no published record either way for C. nalbanti specifically, so the honest statement is that it is currently unbred, or at least unreported, in captivity.

In the aquarium

Cobitis nalbanti is not established in the aquarium trade, and the available sources are taxonomic and genomic papers rather than hobbyist accounts, so care information here is extrapolated from the genus Cobitis and should be treated as provisional. The overriding point is that this is a coldwater fish: close relatives such as Cobitis taenia are kept at roughly 57–64 °F and do poorly if allowed to run warm through summer, and the genus as a whole tolerates a wide range but performs best distinctly on the cool side — an unheated tank or outdoor pond suits it far better than a heated tropical community.

As with all Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; half-doses and gentle products are the safer default if disease treatment is ever needed. A soft sand substrate for natural sifting behaviour, moderate flow, and cover are sensible defaults drawn from the wider genus. Anyone considering keeping this species should treat it as a specialist, cool-water proposition rather than a mainstream community fish, and should expect very little established husbandry precedent to lean on.

Conservation

Cobitis nalbanti has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status here is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than guessed at. It was only described in 2016, and no dedicated conservation assessment appears to have followed.

Its range is narrow — the Han and Geum river systems and a few connecting drainages of central South Korea — which is the kind of restricted, single-country endemism that often accompanies elevated conservation concern once a species is formally assessed, though no such determination has been made for this one. There is no indication in the available sources of an aquarium trade in this species; the pressures it may face, if any, are more likely tied to the general condition of Korean river habitats — damming, pollution and development — than to collection for the hobby.
