Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis ohridana was described by the Yugoslav ichthyologist Stanko Karaman in 1928, based on material from the Ohrid–Skadar lake system in what is now the Albania–North Macedonia–Montenegro border region. It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the spined loaches, within the family Cobitidae — the true loaches, named for the sharp, erectile suborbital spine that sits in a groove beneath the eye of every member of the group.
For decades the taxonomic status of this population was uncertain, and it was often treated as a form or subspecies of the widespread Cobitis taenia rather than a full species in its own right. Nuclear-DNA markers (RAG-1 and S7 ribosomal protein genes) and mitochondrial cytochrome b sequencing later gave a clear cladistic signal separating the Ohrid–Skadar populations from C. taenia, and Cobitis ohridana is now recognized as a valid, distinct species endemic to the Drin–Skadar drainage of the southwestern Balkans.
Morphology
This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach reaching only about 2.5 in in standard length, well short of the size most tropical loaches attain. Like other spined loaches it has a low, elongate body suited to life pressed against or buried in the substrate, short barbels around a small, downturned mouth, and the family's signature erectile suborbital spine, which it can flick out when threatened or handled.
As in other Cobitis, the skin is covered in small, deeply embedded scales rather than a thick protective layer — the same near-scaleless condition seen across the true loaches, which leaves the fish exposed to skin damage and makes it sensitive to medications and to sudden shifts in water chemistry. This is a coldwater, temperate species, not a tropical one: it comes from cool lakes and slow rivers of the southern Balkans, not warm equatorial streams.
Habitat
Cobitis ohridana is endemic to Southeastern Europe, restricted to the Drin–Skadar and Aoos (Vjosë) drainages spanning Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece. Its best-known populations live in two ancient lakes — Lake Ohrid and Lake Skadar — as well as the rivers, spring-fed wetlands and low-gradient streams that connect them.
It is a strictly benthic fish and something of a habitat generalist within that niche: it turns up over fine mud and sand, in gravel, and among dense beds of aquatic vegetation, in both still lake margins and slow-flowing river and channel habitat, including artificial channels. Because it favors little water movement rather than fast riffles, it is a lowland, low-gradient specialist — the coldwater temperate counterpart to the fast-flowing habitats used by hillstream loaches elsewhere in the family Cobitoidea.
Feeding
This is a benthic omnivore and sand-sifter in the classic Cobitis mould. It spends daylight hours buried in soft sediment and becomes active at night, working over the substrate for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans — along with algae and organic detritus picked up from fine mud, sand and gravel.
In an aquarium setting, a soft sediment bed is essential to let it express this natural sifting and burrowing behaviour; related Cobitis species take live and frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp readily once settled, alongside sinking foods that reach the bottom where this fish actually feeds.
Mating
Cobitis ohridana is oviparous, and spawning behaviour recorded for the species involves the male wrapping or forming a ring around the female's body just behind the dorsal fin during the spawning act — a pairing posture documented in dense algal cover, which likely also serves to conceal the pair and the eggs from predators.
As a temperate species, its reproductive cycle is governed by the seasonal rise in water temperature and daylight through spring, in keeping with the pattern seen across the coldwater members of Cobitis, rather than by the flood-pulse migrations that drive breeding in tropical botiid loaches.
Breeding
Spined loaches in this genus scatter adhesive eggs among aquatic plants, typically as water temperatures rise in spring, and Cobitis ohridana follows that pattern, depositing eggs among the dense algae and vegetation of its lake and river habitat with no parental care afterward. Several temperate Cobitis species, along with the related dojo or weather loach Misgurnus, have been spawned in ponds or unheated aquaria by hobbyists and researchers, unlike the tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis, which are rarely if ever bred at home.
That said, Cobitis ohridana itself is not an aquarium staple, and there is no well-documented record of it being routinely bred in captivity; the species is understood mainly from wild population and genetic studies rather than from hobbyist spawning reports. Any keeper attempting to breed it would be working from the general temperate-Cobitis template — a cool, well-planted setup with a seasonal temperature rise — rather than from an established protocol specific to this species.
In the aquarium
Cobitis ohridana is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and is best regarded as a coldwater species for a specialist or conservation-minded keeper rather than a typical community fish. As a genuinely temperate loach it wants cool, unheated conditions — a species tank set up more like a European pond aquarium than a tropical setup — with a soft, fine sand or mud substrate to allow its natural burrowing and sifting behaviour, and dense planting or algae cover echoing its wild habitat.
Being near-scaleless like all true loaches, it would be sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength treatments generally, and, as with other Cobitidae, careful, reduced-dose medication is the safer approach if disease treatment is ever needed. Given its restricted native range and Near Threatened status, any specimens in captivity should be captive-bred stock rather than fish drawn from its already-pressured wild populations.
Conservation
Cobitis ohridana is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria indicating an ongoing population decline linked to habitat loss and degradation. As a species endemic to a small cluster of lake and river systems in the southwestern Balkans — chiefly Lake Ohrid, Lake Skadar and the Drin/Aoos drainages — it has no ability to recolonize from elsewhere if local populations are lost.
The pressures recorded for this region include habitat degradation from water management, pollution and shoreline development around the lakes it depends on. Because the species is confined to a handful of interconnected water bodies shared across five countries (Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece), its conservation depends on coordinated protection of the Ohrid–Skadar–Drin system as a whole rather than any single national effort.
