Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis pacifica was described in 1999 by Kim, Park & Nalbant as part of a wave of taxonomic work sorting out Korea's spined-loach fauna, which for decades had been lumped under a handful of poorly resolved Cobitis names. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, the group that gives the whole suborder Cobitoidea its erectile suborbital spine.
Subsequent molecular and morphological work split many East Asian Cobitis into the segregate genus Iksookimia, named for the Korean ichthyologist Ik-Soo Kim, and Cobitis pacifica was carried over into that genus as Iksookimia pacifica — the combination used in the current mitochondrial-genome and distribution literature on the species. The Catalog of Fishes governs which combination is currently valid; this article keeps the original genus Cobitis per site convention, but readers researching the species further should expect to find it indexed as Iksookimia pacifica in recent papers.
Morphology
Cobitis pacifica is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach in the classic spined-loach body plan: a slender body, a rounded snout with barbels around a small ventral mouth suited to sifting sand, and — the family's defining feature — an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye that the fish can flick out when threatened or handled. Its scales are minute and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked, a trait shared across Cobitidae that has direct consequences for how sensitive the fish is to medication.
As with other Cobitis and Iksookimia species, the body typically carries a pattern of dark blotches or a broken lateral stripe over a pale ground colour, camouflage suited to a sand-and-gravel streambed. Detailed size and pattern data specific to this species beyond the original description and later phylogenetic papers are sparse in the available sources, so exact maximum length is treated as data-light here.
Habitat
This is a coolwater to temperate species, not a tropical one — a point confirmed both by its own distribution data and by studies of its close congener Iksookimia yongdokensis, which is active from March to November when water temperature stays at or above roughly 50 °F and becomes quiescent once temperatures fall below that. Cobitis pacifica is endemic to the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula, recorded across at least 17 streams and 46 sites, including the Bukcheon, Baebongcheon, Hwasangcheon, Cheonjincheon, Ohhocheon, Sacheoncheon, Namcheon and Gangneung Namdaecheon systems.
Within those streams it favours downstream pools with slow current and a sand bottom rather than the swift riffles that some other Cobitoidea prefer, though it depends on the wider stream network staying clean and structurally intact. Populations are reported as relatively large in several of the named streams, but the species as a whole is sensitive to river engineering and water pollution, both of which fragment or degrade this pool-and-sand habitat.
Feeding
Cobitis pacifica is a benthic, sand-sifting omnivore in the pattern typical of Cobitidae: it forages through soft substrate for small invertebrates such as worms and insect larvae, along with organic detritus, using its barbelled, downward-facing mouth to sift rather than to grab prey in open water.
A soft sand or fine-gravel bed is not just décor for a fish like this — it is the medium the species needs to forage naturally, so any aquarium approximation of its habitat would need to preserve that sifting behaviour with an appropriately soft substrate rather than sharp gravel.
Mating
No dimorphism or courtship details specific to Cobitis pacifica are documented in the available sources — data here is sparse, and this article does not guess at pairing behaviour or sexual differences it cannot source. What can be said with confidence, by analogy with its temperate Cobitidae relatives and the seasonal activity pattern documented for the closely related I. yongdokensis, is that reproduction is tied to the warmer part of the year: the species is active from spring through autumn and becomes dormant in cold water, which is the same seasonal window in which temperate spined loaches typically come into breeding condition.

Cobitis pacifica is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, the reproductive mode typical of the genus: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among vegetation or fine substrate in spring with no parental care afterward, rather than guarding a nest or brooding eggs in any way. Several other temperate Cobitidae — including various Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers taking advantage of their coolwater tolerance, but no confirmed aquarium breeding record for Cobitis pacifica itself appears in the available sources.
Given how narrow and specialised its native range is, and how little the species circulates in the hobby, the honest picture is that this is a fish essentially unknown outside dedicated ichthyological survey work — not one with an established home-spawning history.

Cobitis pacifica is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be traded, and the sources available describe wild populations and phylogenetics rather than captive care. Anyone attempting to keep a coolwater spined loach along these lines should take the cue from its close relative Iksookimia koreensis, for which Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank around 100 x 12 in, clean and well-oxygenated water with four to five times turnover, a sand-and-gravel substrate with rockwork, sinking foods supplemented with live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm, and a social group of four or more rather than a single fish.
As with all Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin means real caution with copper-based and full-strength medications — half doses and gentle products are the safer default — and, being temperate, this is a fish for an unheated or coolwater setup, not a warm tropical community tank.
Conservation
Cobitis pacifica is assessed as Near Threatened. Its entire known range is a cluster of streams on the eastern Korean Peninsula, and while populations in several named streams — Bukcheon, Baebongcheon, Hwasangcheon, Cheonjincheon and Ohhocheon among them — are described as relatively large, the species is documented as sensitive to river channelisation and engineering work and to water pollution, both common pressures on small Korean coastal streams.
With no commercial trade to speak of, the conservation story here is entirely about habitat: keeping its home streams structurally intact and clean is what will determine whether this narrow-range endemic remains stable or slides toward a more threatened category.
