Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis phrygica was described in 1944 by Battalgazi and placed in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined loaches. It remains in Cobitis in the current literature, and the Catalog of Fishes governs its valid combination. The species epithet phrygica refers to Phrygia, the ancient kingdom of west-central Anatolia in modern Turkey, marking this as a Turkish endemic.
The genus Cobitis is a large, taxonomically active group of small Eurasian spined loaches distributed from Western Europe through Anatolia, the Caucasus and into temperate Asia, and Turkish freshwater ichthyology has produced a number of narrowly endemic Cobitis species and populations over the past few decades.
