Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis punctilineata was described by Panos Economidis and Theodore Nalbant in 1996, part of a wave of splits in the 1990s that broke the old, broadly defined "Cobitis taenia complex" of Europe into a mosaic of narrow-range endemics. It remains in the genus Cobitis, family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches — the group whose members carry a small, erectile spine beneath the eye and whose Eurasian species are typically cool-water, sand-and-mud specialists rather than tropical stream fish.
The species is easily confused with its close relative Cobitis puncticulata, a similarly small, similarly named spined loach described from a different Aegean drainage in Turkey; the resemblance in both name and appearance has occasionally caused mix-ups in the literature. Genus placement is stable — Cobitis is the correct, current combination — and there is no old Botia-era name to correct here, unlike the more famous botiid loaches of the aquarium trade.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach typical of the Cobitis body plan, with females reaching a documented maximum of about 4 in standard length — males run smaller, as is usual in the genus. Like all Cobitidae it carries the family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive blade tucked into a groove below the eye that can be flicked out when the fish is handled or threatened, and its skin is covered only by tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless.
Detailed pattern description is not available from the sources consulted here, but Cobitis species generally show a slender body with a row of dark blotches or dashes along the flank — the source of names such as "punctilineata" — and barbels around a small, downturned mouth adapted for sifting fine substrate. Data on this specific species' colour pattern is sparse in the literature reviewed; where detail is missing here it is safer to note that than to guess.
Habitat
Cobitis punctilineata is a true Greek endemic, known only from the Aggitis river system, part of the Struma drainage, in the Macedonia region of northern Greece; the type locality lies in channels near the village of Kalambaki, Drama. It occupies marshlands, lowland water courses, springs and their associated wetlands — still to moderately flowing, clear, shallow water over a mud-to-silt bottom, the classic soft-substrate habitat this genus favours across Europe.
This is a temperate, coldwater fish, not a tropical one. Like its close relative Cobitis taenia, which experiences a natural seasonal range of roughly 41–68 °F in the wild and is regularly kept in unheated aquaria, C. punctilineata almost certainly shares that temperate habitat preference rather than needing warm tropical water. Its entire known range sits within a single small river system, which is precisely what makes it vulnerable — there is nowhere else for the species to retreat to if its home waters degrade.
Feeding
As a sand- and mud-sifting benthic omnivore, Cobitis punctilineata forages low over the soft bottom of its marshes and channels, taking small invertebrates, detritus and organic matter sifted from silt and mud. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a benthic omnivore-detritivore rather than a specialised predator or grazer — it works the substrate rather than hunting in open water or grazing biofilm from stone, the strategy used by unrelated hillstream loaches.
A soft mud-to-silt substrate is not incidental to this diet but central to it: sifting behaviour depends on a bottom the fish can work through with its mouth and barbels. No aquarium feeding data exists for this species — it is not established in the hobby — but its close relatives in Cobitis take a similar omnivorous mix of live and prepared foods over soft substrate when kept.
Mating
FishBase records a distinctive courtship for this species: the male forms a complete ring around the female's body just behind her dorsal fin as she releases her adhesive eggs, a spawning embrace documented in a number of Cobitis species in the wild. Spawning is oviparous with distinct pairing rather than group-scattering, consistent with the courtship behaviour described.
No detail is available in the sources reviewed on spawning season, size at maturity, or fecundity for this particular species, and nothing here should be extrapolated confidently beyond what is documented — the genus overall spawns in spring as water temperatures rise, but that specific timing is not confirmed for C. punctilineata itself.
Breeding
Cobitis punctilineata is not established or documented in the aquarium hobby, and there are no records of it being bred in captivity. Within the genus Cobitis, several temperate European species — along with the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, scattering adhesive eggs among plants typically in spring; this stands in contrast to the tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys, which generally have not been bred at home.
Given the courtship ring-embrace behaviour FishBase documents and the species' presumed temperate habits, a spring, plant-associated, adhesive-egg spawning broadly in line with its Cobitis relatives is plausible, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented account for C. punctilineata specifically. No parental care is known or expected in this genus; loaches in this family are egg-scatterers, not cave-guarding or mouthbrooding fish.
In the aquarium
There is no meaningful aquarium-keeping record for Cobitis punctilineata — it is a narrow-range conservation subject, not a hobby fish, and it is not known to be in trade. Any care approach would have to be extrapolated cautiously from its genus and habitat: a temperate, unheated setup rather than a tropical tank, a soft mud or fine sand substrate to allow natural sifting behaviour, and gentle to still, clear water matching its marsh and spring habitat.
As with all Cobitidae, this species is near-scaleless and would be expected to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, the same caution that applies across spined and botiid loaches generally. Given its Endangered status and single-river-system range, any exhibited or research specimens should be sourced only through legitimate conservation or research channels, never wild-collected for the trade.
Conservation
Cobitis punctilineata is assessed by the IUCN as Endangered (November 2023), driven by its extremely restricted area of occurrence — the species is confined to the single Aggitis river system in the Struma drainage of northern Greece. The EUNIS European Species Database similarly lists it as threatened (Vulnerable) at the global, European and EU levels, and notes that it receives protection within one Natura 2000 site, Koryfes Orous Pangaio (GR1150005).
The pressures on its wetland and lowland-stream habitat in northern Greece are typical of the region's threatened spined loaches: peat extraction, drainage and agricultural intensification degrading the marshlands, springs and slow channels the species depends on. As a single-river endemic with no wider range to fall back on, C. punctilineata is a clear case where local habitat protection is the entire conservation strategy — there is no possibility of a resilient met-population elsewhere.
